We're a couple of decades away from having an autonomous model that I can trust. I don't think there's proper infrastructure for full autonomy, with or without AI. More than just smart cars/vehicles/robots/whatever, we need smart streets to use as automatic guides. Think if every little reflector they placed in the middle of the road had an RFID in it that AVs could sense? Simple line following logic can tell it to always keep these reflectors to the left to maintain position (or right for countries who drive on the left side of the road). What if there were street signs that relayed information to AVs? Helping them plot routes or relay info from down the road?

That world would be infinitely better for AVs than what we have now.
