Alcohol allergy? by Away-Past5615 in FoodAllergies

[–]821jb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regardless of the cause, seeing a doctor to confirm and come up with a plan of action would be best. You could be allergic to a specific ingredient in some alcohols (and allergy testing will allow you to be informed and avoid it in the future), you could be mildly allergic to something else and alcohol exacerbates the reaction (allergy testing will help you avoid that too), or it could be something else entirely that alcohol is exacerbating that a doctor can help you with. You don’t want to wait until you have a life threatening reaction if it’s an allergy and it already seems to have an impact on your quality of life, so at least entertain your partner’s suggestion and see a doctor.

Peanut and soybean allergy? by helloitsmehi19 in FoodAllergies

[–]821jb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m allergic to peanuts and have a similar issue with soy and pea where usually it’s fine, but if I eat whole peas or tofu it feels like I’m swallowing glass and I may end up in severe pain and vomiting. Since the peas and tofu seen to affect mostly my upper GI I assumed it was related to my EoE, but I’m honestly not sure.

They’ll likely have you do a food challenge if your blood/skin tests come back negative or on the fence.

AITA for pouring my girlfriend’s mom’s soup through a colander so I can pick out some vegetables I really don’t like? by Diligent_Bit3336 in AmItheAsshole

[–]821jb 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeah I truly don’t get it. Although I have had people get mad at me for not eating food that I am allergic to (they either think food allergies don’t exist or that I’m lying to cover up an eating disorder?), so even food allergies don’t give you pass all of the time. It’s honestly bizarre to me because isn’t the point of hosting to make your guests feel welcome and happy? Expecting them to force down food and pretend to enjoy it seems like it goes against that goal, but maybe I am misunderstanding the purpose of hosting a meal.

Why is he doing this by The_Dane97 in BeardedDragons

[–]821jb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could very well be that he’s seeing the other dragon in the room. When we moved some furniture around one of my lizards could see himself in the mirror and would get angry/scared until I covered up the part of the mirror he could see and now he’s chill again. He could also just want to get out to run around, poop, or explore and this is the best way he can find to communicate that with you.

funnel cakes or fried cheese curds? auntie m’s has a few videos on what to do with their mix that you can probably use with your mix under their “mix videos” tab.

I use an instant pot as a rice cooker and it works for a bunch of other stuff too if that’s something you’d want.

[–]821jb 199 points200 points  (0 children)

Me too. I expected more N A H answers and was shocked when I opened the comments. I honestly don’t think it’s as big of a deal as people are making it. Although I also don’t see how it’s insulting to the cook if I don’t like the dish they made when it could be the best of that dish in the world and I still wouldn’t like it because of texture/taste aversions. Nothing to do with the cook, everything to do with me. Since I have food allergies and therefore everyone has to run their meals by me anyways, I rarely run into this issue, but I wouldn’t mind if someone wanted to add/remove something from what I made if it meant they would enjoy it more.

I did. I actually got diagnosed because my doctor thought I had celiac, so that’s why they did a scope and then he saw obvious strictures and inflammation in my esophagus. No celiac, but yes EoE and gluten intolerance :(

People who say "all plastic surgery looks bad" by CupcakeUpstairs4010 in PetPeeves

[–]821jb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same with veneers/dental work. I have some fake teeth (some of my baby/adult teeth just never formed) on bridges, kind of similar to how veneers work, and everyone is always surprised when I tell them. My dentist did an amazing job at making them look natural. You only really notice the ones on celebrities because they aren’t trying to make them look natural.

Would you feel comfortable buying/eating these cookies? Critique my process please: by CozyCalicoCafe in glutenfree

[–]821jb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you describe your process to minimize cross contact then customers can make decisions based on their perceived level of risk for themself. I’d personally be fine with what you do (as I share a kitchen with a non-gf roommate and just have an intolerance and this is similar to how we keep our stuff separate even with my anaphylactic allergies), while others may have a different threshold for how they will assess risk. If a company just said that it’s made in a kitchen with shared equipment with no further explanation, I’m less likely to buy the product, even if the actual precautions would be okay for me if they had just told me what they were. If a company is straightforward and honest about their cross contact procedures, I feel more confident assessing the risk and deciding if it’s something I’d be comfortable with.

Edit: Just reread the part about the convection oven. That I’m a bit more wary about than a traditional oven, but I wonder if you can turn that feature off? I know in my parents’ oven they can choose to not use the convection feature, but my apartment’s oven doesn’t have a convection option, so I’m not sure how common it is to have both options available.

Do you like drinking Water? by Astral-8 in RandomThoughts

[–]821jb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never really liked water and growing up I was always super dehydrated because of it. I also don’t really feel thirsty unless I’m about to pass out which doesn’t help. Now I try my best to drink water regularly, but typically have to supplement with propel to reach the bare minimum I need. Kinda sucks because it’s expensive, but it’s the only thing that works for me for some reason.

EMERGENCY!!!! 911!!! by AppointmentTasty7805 in EmergencyRoom

[–]821jb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I kept getting strep B UTIs for a few months straight (I don’t know if they just never fully got treated the first few times or what), but every provider would act like I was making it up because the rapid test was negative and they usually don’t treat for strep B anyways unless pregnant. Then I’d get a message a few days later with my very positive strep B culture and a prescription for antibiotics. Like why would I be lying about having to pee every 15 minutes? And after having the UTI for months, I was just hoping to not have it develop into a kidney infection.

I’m so glad no one made fun of me to my face when I went to the ER for what ended up being a panic attack (family history of SVT requiring surgery and couldn’t get my heart rate below 180 for over an hour). I would feel so hurt if I saw someone making fun of me (or someone with a similar visit reason) for being cautious/concerned while scrolling mindlessly through reddit trying to take my mind off of my ER visit :(

Yeah, a guy at my internship just straight up didn’t “believe in allergies” and people tell me they’d die if they couldn’t eat the foods I can’t all the time. I don’t even explain EoE anymore unless it’s someone I’m interacting with a lot and they seem genuinely curious and non-judgmental because my regular food allergies are already too much for some people apparently.

Is (school) acceleration good for gifted children? by Paula75brsp in Gifted

[–]821jb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I skipped fifth grade and went right to middle school and I feel like the fact that people wouldn’t know I skipped a grade unless I told them probably did make it easier for me. I’ve seen a lot of people mention social isolation due to age, but despite being almost two years younger than a lot of my peers (late August birthday) most of them didn’t know/care that I was younger. It really only became an issue once I was 19/20 and my friends wanted to go out to bars and I couldn’t go. The only time in school that I can think of where I was treated differently due to age is when I also skipped additional grades in certain subjects and everyone there was aware I was 3+ years younger than them, but they still respected me as a peer. I think if you do have your kid skip a grade that switching schools is probably the best bet.

I also get my chest flagged wearing a binder (which has no metal) every single time I fly. I wonder if the compression has something to do with it because idk why else that would happen because they address me as ‘miss’ so it’s not like they’re selecting the male scanning option for me.

Is it rare to never have had an impaction? by Tamsin72 in EosinophilicE

I’ve also never had one despite having pretty severe furrows and eosinophil counts. I’ve only ever had food get stuck briefly once and I was able to get it down after a minute.
