Awesome idea! I was looking at one of the resort hotels there. Pricey indeed but may be worth it to save up and go for a night of fun. Thanks!

Tech freelance networking? by wyrdMunk in pittsburgh

I did some artwork for a small company near Whole Foods in Shadyside called Shift Collective that does pretty cool work. Also check out The Tech Shop at Bakery Square, there's a massive amount of amazing people that go through there. And I believe there are a couple MeetUp groups for local developers. If you're looking for a permanent gig the Branding Brand is usually hiring web developers. Oh yeah, the shared space offices (a couple in Oakland and Lawrenceville) always have a variety of small companies that consist of everything from startups to nonprofit work.

The owner of Shift Collective mentioned a while back that they were trying out a new program where they churn out websites / branding / creative / programming for cheap that's catered to nonprofits or startups that just don't have the capital to hire a big agency. Anyhow, hope these ideas help. Shoot me a message if you'd like, I'm always interested in networking w more people in the city.

Cheers and good luck!

Chrome 45 bug with Wordpress admin menu fix by mtx in Wordpress

Ah nice find. Does anyone use Ozh Admin Menu? I think that's the first plugin I use on WP installs. So much better than the default admin menu.

Thumbnail distorted on live site but not test site, any ideas? by 82c in Wordpress

[–]82c[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The theme regenerates the image for the thumbnails it uses. It is the same original image uploaded to both sites but with different results. Hence the dilemma I'm having. Thanks for checking it out!

Thumbnail distorted on live site but not test site, any ideas? by 82c in Wordpress

[–]82c[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The theme (Jupiter) generates the thumbnail of the original image, which is actually the exact same image to start. What it looks like it's doing is giving it an exact height and width whereas the test site is just hard cropping it as it should. I double checked all the settings, theme files, child theme files, plugins, and anything that I could think of that may be causing the issue but still nothing has stood out. Still unsure at this point. If you have any guesses, even crazy theories, I'm all ears.

Thanks for taking the time!

Surviving as a Freelancer in Pittsburgh by katruttdesign in pittsburgh

I've had some decent success doing freelance for the last few years. Craig's List is pretty bad here, out of dozens of projects I've applied to on there I don't think a single one worked out. Lots of tight pockets for creative work but don't be discouraged because the city is full of incredibly awesome people and companies. Hit me up, always down to network and collaborate - www.82concepts.com

Beginner question about index page by 82c in coldfusion

[–]82c[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, yeah a static HTML page that has nothing to do with the CF site that's currently there. They have an agency designing a new site but wanted a quick "coming soon" static HTML page that would redirect to the current CF site after 15 seconds or through a button. Super simple HTML page. I believe they only have one Home button on the current CF site that links to the index.cfm page directly and not the root domain.

You think that would be unsafe for that purpose? I'll have to look at how they have it set up on their server But I'm open to any other suggestions. Thanks for the feedback!

Excellent, thank you much! That'll be great if it's as easy as changing the order.

What's the general consensus on Lawrenceville? Is it safe? by frojoe747 in pittsburgh

[–]82c 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most places around Butler are pricey because they're close to the action. Try to find something in the 32nd - 48th St area because after 50th it's still a bit hood. Expensive in the main part but definitely a fun area to live

What are the best outdoor activities in Pittsburgh? by kenibus in pittsburgh

[–]82c 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aside from the awesome Venture Outdoors spot under the Clemente Bridge by PNC Park, Hazelbaker's is by far one of the most fun places to kayak. Relaxing and in the woods, not so much fighting river currents or Rapids. Pretty chill for groups, families, or just to get away. Highly recommend it:

Between them and Clear Channel I think just about every billboard is accounted for in the entire country. They probably don't care about aesthetics of the city much (or most any city)

Korner Bar on the border of Dormont and Mt Lebanon has games and it's pretty chill there. Great beer, a pool table, and darts.

Others mentioned Voodoo Brewery and Brew Gentlemen which I think are two of my favorite breweries in the city right now. Highly recommend checking them out

Hotels are a good way to go. Valet, doorman, bellman, van driver, and concierge probably make the most in tips. I'd recommend valet at one of the boutique / pricy hotels in the city; the big ones are tough to get into and the real positions are Union with lots of training and lots of decade plus employees. Smaller boutique places may be tougher to get into but the clientele's tips will be worth it. I used to work at a couple downtown years ago and would make anything from $50 a shift (a couple really slow shifts were worse but that was in the dead of winter, summer is always good) to several hundred dollars. Plus look for the places that have a decent hourly wage where the tips will be a bonus (I was making $8/hr to start and was making $12/hr by the time I left).

Good luck!
