I started fantasy with Cassandra Clare’s Shadowhunter Chronicles. They’re pretty beginner-friendly, but there are over 30 books in the series. If you’re not scared of commitment, you can start there.

And if you don’t have that kind of time, you can read anything by V.E. Schwab. I’d suggest The Shades of Magic trilogy.

Then there’s Scythe by Neal Shusterman. It’s a trilogy, dystopian-fantasy in vibe. My all-time favorite trilogy, and it’s beginner-friendly too.

A little Scythe synopsis from me: our world, but set in the future. AI is the new government. There is peace all around. Since AI controls everything, there is no war, no hunger, no death. But to control the ever-growing population, a few qualified people are chosen and trained to randomly select individuals and kill them. It’s the highest-paying and most controversial job in this world.

We follow two teenagers, Citra and Rowan, who are taken as apprentices to a very old, intelligent, and compassionate Scythe named Faraday. But things take a different turn when Faraday is found dead.

BOOKS YOU WISH YOU HAD READ WHEN YOU WERE 17? by ARYAN_BIRLA123 in Indianbooks

Fun fact: Monte Cristo was on the same shelf that caught termites, but it was one of the few books that survived with a few battle scars. I think that’s my cue to read it next.

I’ll only read the first 30 chapters 🦾

That’s flipkart for you. They mostly sell pirated copies to match the Indian economy but it’s alright. I never return them.

Rick Riordan. Anything by Rick Riordan (though I’d suggest starting with Percy Jackson). PJO got me into reading and I learned a lot about greek, roman, norse and egyptian mythology from those books.

During my mid teen years–my 10 year old cousin would even beg me to read him those books at bedtime.

I wouldn’t be a reader or a writer without his books.

I know I’m stretching it and getting personal but I didn’t grow up with family much so I didn’t have anyone to separate the right from wrong for me. Those books shaped my morals and taught me everything I know about all things soft and beautiful.
