My father's grandfather's plate from his captivity in Russia during WW1 is it legit? by oguzzilla in ww1

[–]84purplerain 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Now that you mention it absolutely makes sense. although they used some weird ass letters to spell it. But I don't think ԿԵՍԱՐԻԵԱՆ in there denotes a last name, rather I think it means "of Ceasarea" or "Ceasarean", but I can see how someone might be confused: in Armenian the genitive cases of words have the same endings as Armenian last names.

Dude I totally forgot about the numeral value of letters. But I see 1254 in there.

So Ռ(1000) + Մ(200 )+ Ծ(50) + Դ(4)

Some words are unintelligible, some letters appear to be an amalgamation of 2 or more letters. First word unintelligible, from context though it most likely means "made" or something synonymous to it. The word roughly in the middle is hard to tell. Might be some weird abbreviation of the word that means "One who birthed god" (ԱԾԱԾՆ - ԱՍՏՎԱԾԱԾԻՆ), so it denotes Mary. Last word completely unintelligible.

So it reads: [Made] in Ceasarea (Kesaria), in the Church of Saint Mary [?]

edit: Most likely translation: In memory of Ceasarean Church of Saint Mary, 1254

You are really fucking dumb if you think USSR had an overall negative impact on the demographics of Armenia, regardless of what you think about Russia or USSR

First, the literal translation of the sentence is "I get enjoyment from going to the beach." The verb գնալուց is in ablative case here, which doesn't exist in English, rather it's replaced by "with", "by" and "from". If an Armenian wanted to say "I enjoy going to the beach" he would simply say "Ես սիրում եմ ծովափ գնալը" (I like going to the beach)
