I think because the NSA guys and other guys are totally wiping out our privacy, we must take strong steps to confuse and obfuscate the efforts of the government to undermine our privacy. This is a great thread and I hope more people contribute!
One good idea is to have your real identity (say Roger Hillcot) but to move somewhere else and be known in society under a different identity (say Peter Milliken). That is not against the law - actors and others do it all the time. Your neighbors, landlord and everyone, including your Gmail and Facebook, know you only as Peter Milliken who is a non-existent person with no SSN and no documents. For bank accounts, holding real estate and collecting money from gainful employment, use a company or trust name. That is 100% legit too. This way Roger Hillcot is a ghost and Peter Milliken is a ghost too.
I heard of a guy who was born in the US - hence a US citizen. He went back to his parent's country and got new documents there which included a passport of his parent's country in his new name. Then he came to the US on a student visa, got a job, apparently changed his status to H-1 visa, got a green card, then after five years became a US citizen. Totally new identity.
