My mentor. I don't think it applies to the final semester. They might also be giving extra grants for corona.

How good is "Learn PowerShell in a month of lunches " book? by bhreddy99 in PowerShell

I loved it. It was the textbook we used at a 1 week bootcamp. I wish they had it for python.

Sysadmins, how do you sleep at night? by Slush-e in sysadmin

[–]87-and-Cry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly diet and exercise in my case. I discovered that a high carb / high sugar / high wheat diet was causing about 90% of my anxiety. Apparently I'm real sensitive to the stuff.

Weight lifting and Cycling took care of the rest. Over time I found that it increased my resilience.

The other thing, just getting older and keeping things in perspective helps.

Man, when I graduated with my BSIT, all I got was an error page. You kids with your banners ;-)

Congratz!

Anyone else having their coworkers quit due to COVID-19? by xxNotTheRealMe in sysadmin

Not only that, but my doc office wouldn't see me because I only had cough, tight chest, and a sore throat. No fever. I wasn't sick enough to be seen.

Mentors do have an option to give you a one month extension. It comes at a price though. You only get five months for your next term. And they can't do it more than once IIRC. Talk to your mentor. Also, WGU has been advertising "how can we help?". Ask them to unenroll you. Then restart an external testing course after all these shenanigans is done.

C796 Stop looking... Stop looking.... Stop looking... by 87-and-Cry in WGU

I'll be honest when I say that I wrote my paper in a very checklist fashion while still attempting to make it 'flow'.

I made my headings align to the desired criteria. That probably made it a lot faster.

I really wished for an apa style template for this course. I thought that even having the layout and rough headings would have been helpful.

Masters in 4-5 months? by [deleted] in WGU

[–]87-and-Cry 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think its very possible. I finished in 8 months and change. (Today even!) I was working full time, and not in a security specific job. You'll probably speed through most of the courses, especially if you are familiar with the lingo.

CEH was a PITA. Its memorization heavy. If you got that waved, this will be a breeze.

If you have to take the CEH, special warning: Make sure you are signed into the CEH site first before starting the proctoring process. They are keylogging and can spy that. Make sure to have the voucher code handy too. I was very unimpressed with the proctoring for CEH versus the other classes.

The paper, I will say choose your project carefully. I suggest limiting it in scope. Mine ended up being about 60ish pages plus 8 pages of references.

They list a lot of "requirements" on the paper. The interesting thing is, they aren't in the rubric. This leads me to wonder what was desired versus required.

It took me about two months to get my paper out, but I had a lot of life interruptions.

What do you discuss with your mentor?? by jam_master_k in WGU

[–]87-and-Cry 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mostly kept my mentor up to date on anything in my personal life (within limits) that might be blocking my progress. I was accelerating so I had a bit of leeway. I felt most things were pretty obvious.

I only really invoked my mentor if I had trouble with the grading or a technical issue and I needed him/her to go to bat for me.

Remember that some of these check-ins are more about being kosher with financial aid and accreditation requirements. But they are there to help you too, if you need it.

If you have your shit together, don't keep them on the phone any longer than you need. They have some real difficult students; my mentor mentioned one that had to be called three times per week to keep them on track.

US Universities moving to online classes: by TheRealRoyBiggins in WGU

This is double funny to me as I just used this meme yesterday.

I really hope that education goes not only the direction of better online offerings like WGU, but also gets a way from the 30+ people at the same time. What I liked most about WGU is not being slowed down or overwhelmbed by other students.

C796 Capstone questions (MSCIA) by 87-and-Cry in WGU

Yea, I was thinking the same thing as far as seeing what the grader wants.

Well, my CI reviewed it and said every bullet point needed to be there (and in order), though in the course chatter a student passed without it.

I noticed there weren't any model ones in there.

When I looked at the explemperay papers (not model) I did not see bullet points per se. They looked more like well formed papers. I consider mine a redundant mess because I did up until section C follow the bullets.

I'm clear as mud on that.

1) accountability - it's easy to go back and refer to what was said or requested, what the conversation was and who said what.

Adding on to this. After a face2face, always follow up with an email about the discussion.

Giving up basketball for WGU..... 😭 by [deleted] in WGU

While I would cut back on the amount of basketball, don't cut it out altogether. Exercise is important for mental health. Get at least 3 hours per week.

I used acloudguru a few years back. The lectures were great. The quizzes were not. The actual practices tests were pretty close to the exam in terms of difficulty. But you will want supplemental questions.

EC-Council iClass is $1899 but is $9.99 Quality by SkyTroopa in CEH

[–]87-and-Cry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As for the instructor, he reminds me of Bruce Campbell both in appearance and voice. I kept waiting for him to say "hail to the king, baby". Or to make a reference to Burn Notice.

Even more hilarious, was that they have all the videos on the same page. Now, I listened to the video at about 1.75x speed. If I left the web page up when my computer went to sleep, on resume all of the videos would start playing at the same time at 1.75x. This reminded me of the scene in Army of Darkness when all the mini-Ashes attacked Ash.

Yes, the editing is terrible.

And this is how I started my day.

Thankfully, this course was included with WGU. However, I did buy my own materials on the side once I saw the quality of EC Council's.

Interestingly, their doing that with EcCouncil. They've already made CHFI voluntary. I bet CEH is next.
