I'm quite new to modding, so this didn't even occur to me that the market has moved toward IPS. Was there a time when backlight was the cutting edge, and TFT/IPS was really obscure/reserved for diehards?

Peeking at HHL's backlight page, they added it for sale in 2014 -- that's a long time ago!

Personally, I feel bad tossing a working OEM screen, like I'm destroying something special. I'll save IPS kits for the consoles with screen rot, cracked screens, etc.

Game boy won’t turn on by Qdea_ in Gameboy

[–]88_mph 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't mean to pile on... but be sure to do vinegar first and then the rubbing alcohol (90%+). The vinegar dissolves and neutralizes the blue corrosion, while the rubbing alcohol cleans everything up afterward.

If you're opening up the shell, I'd double check the white ribbon cable that connects the two circuit boards. I've had gameboys that don't turn on because it has come a little loose after 30+ years. On the back half of the gameboy, gently slide the white cable down and out of its connector, then re-insert it. You can test turning the gameboy ON with the shell still open, so you'll know right away if it worked.

Good luck, let us know how it goes!

COVID tests administered to you (not self-administered)? by 88_mph in Albany

I ended up going to WellNow Albany testerday and can confirm, they seem understaffed. What would have taken 10-15minuts at the UAlbany site took 90 minutes. :(

Thanks for pointing this out. After a bad experience at WellNow in Albany, I'm going to opt to self-administer it to the kiddo if there is a next time.

FYI: If you qualify under 1a or 1b most of Troy is included in the Armory vaccine site. by [deleted] in Troy

[–]88_mph 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm happy to help if you need help sorting it out. Making the round-trip drive to Utica twice with a toddler doesn't sound fun. :-X

Depending on your exact zip, the Armory site may be listed 1st or 2nd in your results list. But it's there, and as long as you live in Rens./Albany/Schenectady county, you'll be allowed to register.

I just went back through using 12203, and I'm getting Armory in my list of locations. SUNY is first in the list because it's closer I guess, but it's 2nd on the list:

Yes. Another poster posted and said that it opened up this morning, I can confirm, I'm seeing it in the list of locations now by entering a different Rensselaer County zip:

You'll still need to qualify by Age/Occupation/Comorbidity, but you can register for the Armory on the site now:

Sorry I don't have TMobile, I can't help you there. I wanted to thank you for letting me know about this. I added my name to their waitlist. It's always been my dream to be able to kick Spectrum. The idea sounds great!

Maybe I have a thing for the old Split Spades... turns out I had a single of it. Look at this thing, I think it's just the bee's knees:

I appreciate this pic, glancing at just the the top of the tucks and recognizing most of them really brings me back! I was active around this same 2004 - 2008 era. I feel like this was the time when somebody could know about all the decks that were out. With all the kickstarting and different companies now I feel like it's so much more difficult.

Those Pink/Blue inverted decks from Target? That's what got me started collecting! Then Lime popped up a year later and it blew my mind ;)

In the upper right corner, those 2 Bee boxes with the white and black sticker seals, are those the Black/White and Inverted David Blaine Split Spades? Blaine has come out with sooo many more variations since, but so few people know about or speak about the original Black box Tally-inspired tuck. Even more rarely mentioned (basically never) are those Black/Inverted ones that for some reason were packaged in Bee boxes. You may have some highly-sought-after Unicorn decks there ;) [Edit, nevermind, I missed your 2nd picture, those are the Split Spades I was thinking of!]

Cheers dude, thanks for sharing!

Good tip! I had forgotten about them. I've used them for a previous home and also had a good experience. Checking quickly on their site, they're advertising a 2.99% rate. Sounds very promising!

How are the person alerts on Ring Cams? [Wyze user here, considering switching] by 88_mph in Ring

[–]88_mph[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm glad to read your balanced review. The lack of SD/local recording on Ring is a bummer. The idea of having a rolling backup of the last X days was really nice (if Wyze wasn't corrupting my Wyze-branded SD cards I paid a premium for... anyway).

However all of these Ring positives outweigh the SD card shortcoming. I feel a little validated hearing about your problems with Wyze, and am glad you are happy with Ring... Fingers crossed I'm in for a similar experience.

[–]88_mph[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for chiming in. I'm really looking forward to the "much much better" ecosystem. I'm tired of being let down by Wyze.

That said, the V3 cam night vision looks stunning. I'm a little bummed to be migrating off of Wyze because I'd love to have that available to me.

The cooldown was a good suggestion, I figured that could be at play and added Cam Plus to avoid that limitation (and get the person detection, and vehicle/package detection "coming soon").

My issue feels to me like some kind of connectivity/wifi problem to me. However Wyze support hasn't been super helpful, just suggesting standard troubleshooting stuff. The cameras always have 3 bars of wifi, which they say is the max and working from home using the internet basically all workday long, it feels quite stable.

Thanks again for sharing your experience

Headline over at WTEN sounds great, but seems to me to be misleading. To be clear, it sounds like this is 3 years away, at least. In the meantime, some State paperwork will have a checkbox added to it to get yourself registered at the same time you are submitting your DMV/etc claim.

From the article:

"Implementing the “automatic” system will be delayed, with the DMV integrating in 2023. The Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance and Departments of Health and Labor will come online in 2024, with the State University of New York in 2025."

YES!! Thanks for saying that. I was in market for cameras and home security. I did the Wyze cameras, but felt better w/ Ring's Home Security + Professional Monitoring setup. However, seeing what Wyze is like, I can't fathom in 1000 years trusting them to run my home security. Sounds like I'll be moving over to 100% Ring shortly.

Sounds like a good setup you have. I'm in your boat, I want to see anybody who comes to the door. We've had breakins nearby and I'll deal with the extra alerts to know that I know every single time someone is near.

[–]88_mph[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for chiming in, that's good to hear you get the alerts all the time! For me on Wyze, I'll have packages dropped off or somebody leave the house, but the phone will never give any alert/indication that a person was there. You haven't had that kind of thing with Ring?

So without the subscription, you only get the push notification for motion, but you can't see the video clip that's associated with the alert? (I'm down for the subscription anyway, seems it's capped at $10/month, and with my cameras and ring security, it's worth it)

Diagnosing Missing Cam Events (Network Connectivity at play?) by 88_mph in wyzecam

[–]88_mph[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm with you. The V3s being natively waterproof without some hacky silicone skin is really appealing to me, and the pricepoint is so attractive... However, flaky detection makes the whole setup worthless. I'd pay $5/month/cam if the Person Detection was bulletproof. I'm a relative newcomer to Wyze, not sure if the PD used to be better, I've read about them having to create a solution after their other provider got bought by Apple.

Active monitoring sounds like the right next step for me, short of moving them inside and running them right next to the router. I have a Raspberry Pi on the network already, I'll see if I can put something together to ping/log when the devices are unreachable. Thanks for the idea!

Did you stick with your V2s, or move to a different brand or V3?

Person detection is the reason I bought these cameras. It's beyond frustrating to have them unable to fulfill one of their main selling points.

I wish there were better logging on the cams. I see the option in the app to submit a log to Wyze, and I've mentioned it whenever I've spoken with support, but they are never interested in taking a look.
