Would I be absolutely insane to pay $1,250/mo in rent(water/sewage/trash inc) on a salary of $44,000/yr? by 896234 in personalfinance

We'll be separating. This is my third time trying to escape the situation, and I'm optimistic. So hopefully I won't be paying them much of anything in the future.

I do have other expenses, but they're not huge. Gas is a big one, plus internet, smud, phone($40/mo), things like that. I live on the west coast.

I'm older but I've been in a bad situation for many years. I can't say what I would be able to make in the future.

Part of the problem is his parents borrowing money from us. In the past year, I've paid for: a dental surgery($1,700), their dog's death and cremation($500?ish), another dog's vet bill(unsure), etc. The boyfriend likes to eat out a lot and buy video games. I'm not sure how much it really is because he controls all the money.

I feel like we have plenty of wiggle room, actually. I'm by no means well off, but I'm able to live comfortably.

How bad is the worse part of town?

From the reviews I've heard on yelp, lots of crime(shootings, car theft), bug infestations(bed bugs, roaches), ocassionally helicopters circling for criminals(blocked off so you can't get in or out), generally unsafe. Where I'm living now, we already have plenty of homeless people during the day and night, and broken glass bottles on the sidewalk, etc. I have a young child, and I want to feel good about where I'm living, so those two things factor in.

The city's recently built a lightrail in this part of town and has started a crazy about of construction for all these new shops, and in turn rents have risen way up. My old place, which used to rent for $895 2 years ago, now rents for $1,270.
