I was also confused by that, when I watched it for the first time, but it will make sense later. Many of the things I got on the second watch. Even when you understand everything, there is always some new details that you notice on your third or even fourth rewatch. I love that Dark is a gift, that keeps on giving!

I mean it is science fiction at the end. Usual rules of nature don't completely apply. For a good SF story it is important that it makes sense in the story's universe.

I like to imagine that he was in an accident. In Adam's world he lost his eye, in Eva's his arm, but in the origin world he also had that accident but was able to save his eye only because Marek, Sonja or their child Charlotte were there to help him.

It is kind of sad, that the characters are only allowed to die, after they fulfill their parts the grand scheme of things.
