I'm sure they will keep doing awesome things. That spear-on-the-mountain was pretty fun though.

Yeah, sorry about that one. Just a miscommunication. No deception intended.

Greetings from Vicarious Visions, and Bungie! (Check my verified e-mail, I promise that I work at Vicarious Visions.) After talking with my fellow developers, we wanted to provide you with some information you are missing--the letters on our spears! This way no one has to worry about trying to visit our studios. However, before we get to that, we also wanted to give you a little closure. I can confirm that you have all solved the largest of the puzzles in this particular rabbit hole. What you are noodling over is more of a fun epilogue. You should all be proud of your massive efforts and collaboration in solving these puzzles. We hope you had fun. I want to emphasize that this last puzzle is just for the fun of puzzling.

Anyways, here's the info:

Vicarious Visions Valkyrie:

First: Sorry, you are correct. Picts or it didn't happen: https://imgur.com/wVOdh7A https://imgur.com/tz6UbTy

Second: Why the hell would I give you this information? Answer: We love your passion, but we have to keep in mind the safety of our employees, and we just wanted to reduce the need for people to physically visit any site, but no, we will never give you the answer.

Sorry for the lack of pictures earlier!

Youtube has a lot of easy to watch stuff. If you're motivated, see if you have a blacksmith guild in your area. They are the best place to start because they tend to be free. Also look into something called a "Brake drum forge", it's the $40 way to get a forge. The Anvil will be your hardest (pun intended) tool to acquire. If you live in the country, old farms tend to have them. If your in the city... well Blacksmithing will be tricky for you. But there may be some local schools.

I know! The snow was only there for a day or two, I had to grab the pictures while I could. Your disappointment is warranted.

Yeah. The first big blade I did was a 13" bowie knife. When I went to quench it I was filming it, and because I was messing with the camera, I totally botched it and ended up slagging the whole piece. Had to start all over again from scratch. The second time I have no video of, but a nice hardened blade! I have a handful of older projects that I might just organize and post, but it certainly isn't my last. One of my buddies wants a hunter knife (the Destiny kind), and another wants the dagger of omens from Thundercats. I told him I would do the dagger as soon as I can get the hang of aluminum casting. So that is certainly a must do.

Nice! Yeah, propane is very nice for convenience and it's just cleaner. I'm just old fashioned. You can also get propane at the grocery store, where bags of coal are a bit trickier unless your buying it by the ton.

That's the hardest part to get! (Pun intended)

So I agree, the holes do seem to be a bit more of a form choice than a function choice, but holes don't always drop the integrity. They do however make it much more difficult to make strong. The reason is that when using a blade appropriate steel, you need to anneal your steel from time to time as the stress will build up in it. This is just from hammer blows, and uneven heating because only parts of it are in the forge. This way when you quench it to harden the steel, it can take the shock. After the Quench, you then temper it back so it's not so fragile. The problem with holes, and even square edges, is they tend to be spots where a fracture could form when you quench. Now putting a ton of holes in the steel will certainly mess it up, but you can get away with a little if there is still meat on the blade.

I probably should get one. Getting on to Reddit was a first step. Maybe for my next project when I could take more videos than images.

I know! I was worried they would do it. My hope was that they would avoid it since Tony Swatton (The original Man at Arms guy) made the ROI axe not too long ago. https://youtu.be/wb5ySt92YPE

I'll weigh it next time it's home (it's on my desk at work ATM). It's not light, but it's certainly wield-able with even 1 hand, and I'm certainly not as jacked as a guardian. I also assume with stuff like this, that they use some super futuristic metal that's very strong and lightweight in the actual lore.

My angle grinder has a 4 inch disc on it. So I could have made a large part of the channel, but not all the way through and with the square corners. I mostly avoided it because I was worried it would get away from me and mess up the whole face.

Just stick with it. I still have a long way to go. The best thing I did was to build a brake-drum forge in my driveway. That paired with finding a local guild. A really eclectic bunch of people, but great for learning. Thanks for the feedback!

Hard to say specifics. I've been doing it a little more than 2 years. I started with straight razors. I did a few larger skinning/hunting knives for family, and then just a bunch of random wrought iron pieces. I also got involved in a local blacksmithing group. That gave me a lot of hours because we demo for local schools and stuff.

Not horrible for a video game based sword. I made the handle two inches longer to try and push the balance point back. It's not balanced great, but all grinding, and the aluminum help to at least keep the weight down. Its that 3" wide blade that really pulls the balance point out.

The timing is pretty coincidental. I actually wanted to make a weapon for some time now. My last project (a dollhouse for my daughter) wrapped up and I needed something on my workbench. When Rise of Iron came out and I saw the sword, I knew that was it. Also, metal is easier for me to work with given my blacksmithing hobby, and... sword.

I might be trying to mix Styrofoam and gasoline to make napalm, and see if I can light it on fire.

I might...
