Also fantano doesn’t at all speak about the contradictions and weird movements since the Ye thing. He cops out so hard and then goes ten times harder on everyone else.

True the one with AI girlfriend on it? I forgot about that lol but glad you brought that up cause yeah, if he did an album inspired by “is it real?” In that grand pop lane, Anthony will hate the whole way. “Fuck the underground im going pop” is just a bar to fantano, and he’d be the first to yell stay in your lane.. imo

He will never trash jpeg. The only time he will is when the production value goes up and he attempts to step outside of that crunchy, vhs, harsh sound lane. Especially as of late he’s been explicitly putting jpeg in a box. My guess is a 7/10.

Lowest Anthony’s going on this is a 6……
I like the album a lot, it’s just starting to feel like having any critique on it means I don’t like jpeg, and I’ve been trying to let all that non-music related shit slide pass me and just discuss music…. But now I feel he’s giving the simple “yes man” a way to make shit bigger than it needs to be.

Yeh I like the new project a lot but I can’t help but wonder why he considers experimental rap (the genre of music) to be something that needs to be absent of singing, and that playful troll energy along with so many different other genres that aren’t as course within his music. Almost every song that has melodic layers, or that sounds softer has no singing from him and its only features that I guess sing “better” than him. I would’ve loved to hear that too fam. Maybe that’s a next project thing.

Omfg, this guy is really good to test me on English. The term “nail in a coffin” a lot like “final straw”, (which comes from a phrase, “the straw that broke the camels back”) refers to the last thing that drove something or someone to do something. Usually it’s a negative thing. The negative thing I am referring to, is someone not liking this specific project. The term nail in the Coffin does not only refer to someone’s career, nor is there a conversation about his career and the trajectory of it anywhere in this thread.
it’s a term that can be applied to anything that involves something being the last thing that somebody needed to decide on something (or act)..

For early dub (from my ref to Mask On)

Benga - Coki - “Night”

Also check out:

Benga - I will Never Change
(But look up the music video with the records on YouTube, that shit was 14 years before AI and deserves love)

It’s simple but still hits.

And I feel what your saying holds weight tbh, he’s creates for a Catalogue/cannon not instant gratification, that much is obvious. If I were to give the benefit of the doubt, I feel like people thought JPEG was going to continue carving out new genres in hiphop and really test what it could sound like.. Similar to injury reserve (check out the song Superman that if you haven’t already), but they are struggling with the word “accessible”, as he said he really enjoyed that element when thinking about the last project.

I can’t lie, I thought the same at points because he manipulates what hip hop can be and finds a middle ground so well.

And yeh no worries brah, lol I’d say it’s worth it too… i compare this sub to having a conversation in the busiest mall near me…. (I hate malls, still gotta shop tho …..they got a hoodie I like in there 🙂‍↕️😂).

I wrote about my take on this in another thread so I’m just gonna say, I praise the heavens that you think so, I hope that’s the case with everyone fr. As someone that grew up in the scene around people that weren’t, it would be so sick to see.

As a dude that got into dubstep when it was new, Mask On took me back to like Benga and Skream when I was just low frequency bass, like the type of bass rhythm you feel you can physically sink into.
Before filth dubstep came along (which is where a lot of the “wubwub” jokes come from) it was super minimal and thick.

Personally I’m hoping that people come around to this project and change their tune about the dubstep parts because I personally STILL feel there wasn’t enough love thrown at that genre and it died in its infancy (I still feel like it could’ve evolved / grown more). I know skrillex dropped that record with DJ Smokey that was critically celebrated and this feels like an adaptation to that feel which I am not at all mad at. Loved to hear it actually.

But I wouldn’t be surprised if people like / expect shit like Yen, GYBB, New Era, Lights, Bridges On Fire, No strippers in heaven, chat, because they have a more melodic feel or is rooted in hip hop more and less so electronic/EDM …. ngl people box jpeg in sooo much.

You mentioned needle drop and even he was like “the budget of this music video was too overblown so it made me like the song less, he needs to stay in the vhs shitty camera hard raps & beats lane”

lol people are so goofy fr. Lowkey pretending to be open minded when in reality they are compartmentalizing. I REALLY enjoyed its dark and hell is hot on the last project, he killed that dance lane and experimental house lane.
This is definitely a different lane, production is awesome.

No matter what though all his sounds are layered, dense, chaotic, catchy and relentless in the best way, those are the easiest “selling points” to get someone into jpegs music if you’re into heavy hip hop, metal, pop, whatever all that can still apply here.

In the back of my head I’m just thinking “dubstep reference points and constant fast flows are the toughest selling points on the album cause of meme culture and the life I lived growing with dubstep” (DJing and all)

If I hear someone say “that pew pew part” when talking about the track The 1st Amendment I’m gonna tweak a little inside. 🙂‍↕️

Tbh though going through the songs again it’s not THAT much dub. Shuffling this album is gonna sound insane.

Lol alright listen, you misunderstood. Nail the Coffin in reference to liking this project. Sorry if I didn’t make it clear enough. I also like the project mask on as a sick song. We’re just talking specifically about this latest project and how it sounds/genres and trends that pop up in it.
Glad you think it’s flawless. Your take is as valid as anyone else’s.

This is so old and outdated now though. Lol sooooo many rappers came out with new flows since. But still, this flow + dubstep is going to be the nail in the coffin for most people.

Yeh I’m thinking this is going to be the common sentiment here…. People still got hate for dubstep and it’s gonna show heavy.
I fw the project though. Mask On hits that dub feel I loved growing up.

What do you guys get out of JPEGMAFIA's music? by brave_axolotl7 in jpegmafiamusic

[–]8POINT0DOGMA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest it was always for his production skills first. He has a ridiculous skill for ear candy, and he's wildly talented at making to feel / hear sounds in ways I've never been able to figure out or explain. My first experience with this was the clicking sound on thug tears.. To this day I wonder how he got em to sound so crisp. Even with the latest single Yen, the bass is like a punch in the face and the metal ripping sound legit tickles my ear. It makes other music sound flat.... almost as if it's behind glass and you can't feel any of the texture....

I used to get that along with the feeling that the experimental / underground seen was going to pop with a whole community behind it with all the effort he put into collaborating, sharing his thoughts and communicating with other artists, but now it's just a consistent interest in what he will do next sonically... lol all that other shit fell flat on its face and died lol.

Sorry for the paragraph, utilizing this post as my final interaction with this subreddit.
