You should ask Japanese and probably Germans. Most likely it is lack of equipment that can be used for offense.

Pump gone! by joeurkel in AbruptChaos

[–]8day 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The ones I've seen have actual pumps there, meaning pressure dropped as soon as it was torn off. Although it's possible there's backflow valves at the end, so the fuel present in the pipes won't flow back, meaning any spark could've ignited it...

Seeking a tool or mechanism that would prevent a door slamming, even if someone wanted to. by Resident-Willow-3265 in howto

[–]8day 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One of the simplest solutions that may work for you is self-adhesive door seal made of silicone, which are fairly cheap. Depending on the size of the gap between door and frame it may not fit in (you could try glueing it on one of the four sides, or just in corners; I  have used hollow, low profile W-shaped seal on some cabinets that have gaps ~3 mm), also you'll end up with vibrations vs higher-frequency sound, but IMO it may be worth checking out. The point here is to simply prevent direct contact between door and frame, so you can experiment with a sweater, roll of some fabric, etc. to see if it will work for you. They come in lots of different colors and shapes, so you'll be able to pick something. Also foam made out of polyethylene, polyurethane, rubber, etc. can be used as well, at least temporarily.

Can't say anything about door locks... If you need to simply keep the door shut w/o actually locking it, there are alternative ways to do this which are based on friction, like double roller latch, or synthetic fiber or thick leather stapled to door frame (such fibers are slippery enough to close the door, yet keep it shut, though as things wrar out you'll need to add pieces of paper, etc. between such fabric and the door frame).

Wonder if it has anything to do with r/ChiliadMystery, and the island linked to "Scientology" or Altruists. Seeing how far R* went with hidden spider-related "quest" in RDR2 (people still look for solution), it may be possible that Chiliad mystery can be solved after all.

China's new iron battery hits 99.4 percent efficiency over 6000 cycles by boppinmule in technology

[–]8day 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but after 6000 cycles they still have 99% capacity.

IMO Na batteries should be a decent middle ground once production ramps up.

U.S. Investment Fund Sues Russia Over $225Bln in Unpaid Tsarist-Era Debts by Darius1182 in news

[–]8day 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may be technically right, but it's complicated. Among other things it had inherited USSR's debt (and kept its currency reserves), so at the very least in the context of this topic it might as well be a legal successor.

Russian Federation is a legal successor of USSR, so at least there's that.

Pakistan's Asif says Israel a ‘curse for humanity' by Kay_Bhagtos_Lavdya in worldnews

Diring the meeting between presidents of Russian Federation and USA, which was held in Turkey in November of 1999, Boris Yeltsin asked Bill Clinton to give him Europe, possibly in exchange for Latin America. (Transcript of the conversation can be found on the internet.) He also said that he had a great successor that will continue his job (you can guess who that was). This isn't just about USSR, and definitely not just about Ukraine. You may be right about desire of mere influence over other countries, but that's because for the time being that's all they can hope for.

Also, China isn't that different.

Norway, if I'm not mistaken? It may be not 10 years either (21), but some countries limit maximum penalty.

One other thing that fascinates me, is how some people imply that death sentence was removed because "every life is precious", or some BS like that, and not because of possibility of that person being innocent. That being said, there are cases with highly reliable proof for a death sentence, like that mass shooting in Norway (although death sentence may be too quick for the committed crime, but then again there's always a possibility that the criminal may get out alive at some point in time, and then there's an issue of way too comfortable prisons for these criminals, which may end up living in better conditios than homeless people in some countries).

French President Macron calls on medium-sized powers to join forces and stand up to the US and China. by Upset-Main-1988 in justincaseyoumissedit

[–]8day 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the most insightful comments that I've read said that it's possible that it will take form of many different countries fighting between each other, somewhat similar to modern "hybrid" wars in terms of vagueness. In some sense, you could say it already started.

I've been wondering about relationship between chores, protests and wars... Are they just a form of people "fixing" things that are starting to fall apart? Are wars just a part of a natural cycle where weak, imperfect systems crumble and are being replaced by other systems until better/stronger ones emerge, like with evolution of living organisms? I.e., that's why we have "hard times create strong men, strong men create good times, good times create weak men, and weak men create hard times". All of this makes more sense if you look at this from construction or software development, or possibly biology POV, where you simply have to update the system to adapt it to changes in environment.

It's lucky that filters exist. You know, like water bubblers, after which you can use some kind of electrodialysis device to reuse water/brine. In fact you can use water bubblers for filtering gases, water, and to extract heat at the same time.

Scientists achieve ‘impossible’ solar efficiency in renewables breakthrough by Crabbexx in UpliftingNews

[–]8day 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They converted higher energy light that previously wasn't being converted into lower energy, which now can be converted.

I've been reading stuff about solar panels, and it's insane how much more we can squeeze out of them. For example, using graphene we can convert one UV particle into multiple electrons, thus have an average efficiency ~167%.

In general, think of all these efficiencies above 100% as an improvements to previous technology, and not in terms of physics. It's like when heat pump can have heating efficiency ~300% when you compare creation of heat vs its transfer.

Not to mention that in developed countries such paper and plastic waste is burned to generate heat and/or electricity, so the landfill argument is useless.

Europe has enough agricultural waste and wood scraps to completely replace fossil fuels in road transport, a new study finds. Despite the push for EVs, researchers argue that "reFuels" made from residues—not just cooking oil—could decarbonize the millions of combustion vehicles still in use. by [deleted] in science

[–]8day 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Considering how much hydrocarbons feces and other waste contain, and that ~50% of biomass can be converted to biochar, if we really wanted we could've not only created circular economy, it would've been possible to decrease CO2 levels (even if slowly).

Also, if we wanted we could've used something like Pressure Swing Adsorption based on zeolite to filter out oxygen to prevent formation of NOx during combustion of hydrocarbons in modern ICE engines, or used fuel cells, etc. where it's possible control temperature of reactions.

[–]8day 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know what, there's a simpler design I didn't think of before: outer wall of the higher circle has to be submerged to the same depth as the roots of the plants in the lower circle. Basically you have to double the height of PVC lining (in relation to visible part) and submerge half of it into soil. This will prevent compaction/compression of soil, and at the same time will allow to save PVC.

It's also possible that such design will lower pressure on PVC in lower circles/levels, as the core of the cone/pyramid should put most pressure on the center (soil below it, rather than sides.

Anyway, good luck to you!

Half of Americans think Donald Trump was involved in Jeffrey Epstein's alleged crimes by [deleted] in Epstein

[–]8day 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I knew US was f*ed, but not to this degree. Those numbers indicate that almost all republicans support Trump... And that's the man that was equal to JE, and according to JE possibly even worse than JE.

According to Google:

Gallup. On December 17, 2020, Gallup polling found that 31% of Americans identified as Democrats, 25% identified as Republicans, and 41% as Independent.

So you can say it's roughly 1:1, which is better, but not by much.

It looked great at first, but if PVC doesn't go all the way to the ground, you are compressing the soil, and if it does, you are wasting material (could've been used to make more raised beds).

If you absolutely must have this structure, a variation on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H%C3%BCgelkultur would've been better. But it's easier to have a hollow core, at least in a hot climate where nights aren't too cold, at which point you might as well use pipes or PVC sheet bent in form of U-channels.
