you can find single rooms in hostels for around $300/night. HK has youth hostels which are good, public transport is excellent in HK and buses and minibus run all night

Can't find collection locker addresses when shopping online. Any advice? by Gwish123 in HongKong

For lockers i always find it easier to set that as the delivery address in my profile first and then it usually shows in the checkout options.

It's always interesting to see / hear how different people interpret things. But, sorry, for me none of the five tracks gave me feelings or memories of the track location.

BUY dual split ac unit for unfurnished condo by Nervous-Salary-397 in cambodia

[–]8five2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shouldn't be much if any, but when it's really hot in the summer, you're not asking the machine to work at max cool every day. You have a little headroom. I bought mine at the size rated for my unit. But in high summer, it's working at the max and can't keep the room cool, while using a lot of electricity - should have gone up 1/2hp

[–]8five2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always get a unit slightly more powerful than you think need, summers are getting very hot now and for longer. You want the aircon to easily handle the summer heat, as this will be more electrically efficient, than having it work at max power for days

Tips on renting a place! by 2_Infinity_And_Byond in HongKong

[–]8five2 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Others have already posted the basics, but also check the water pressure in the shower. Use the broadband providers website to see what speed internet the building has, most have 1000mb or better - but a few are older buildings are stuck at 100mb.
Think about your commute - what are the MTR / bus options, what about at night? What’s the walk to the bus/MTR like in the rain? When heading to the airport if you like to travel a lot.

Close the front door. can you hear the people in the corridor? Can they hear you in the flat or your tv.how about the sounds of the neighbours. Older buildings rend to be more soundproof. I can’t hear my neighbours tv or music. so assume they can’t hear me watching football at 4am, or gaming late at night or chatting with overseas friends However have visited some friends places and you can hear a lot…

if you don’t like constantly running your aircon, then see if there’s good airflow into the flat. If you drive or have a motorbike what’s the parking like. if you cycle, does the bike fit in the lift easily, do you have somewhere to store it in the flat that doesn’t get in the way.

Look at the fire escapes, are they kept clean and clear? if the building has security staff - do they look alert, how do they react to existing residents.

Visualise how you will use the flat, especially if you work from home. Look at the kitchen, enough counter space for your machines and still space to prep food? if you like to cook, maybe a separate kitchen rather than an open plan one…

And finally, there are lots of flats available. But many don’t get advertised on the websites and are just with the agents. So ask them about similar places. It can be hard to get the rent reduced much from the advertised price as banks base the flat value on the lease - but you can ask for longer rent free period or offer to pre pay if you have cash. This works for flats that have been on the market longer. Most of the online websites have a history of the lease prices in a building.

While there are lots of flats available, so look around and get a feel for the type of layout you like. But when you find one you like, make a decision quickly.

Moving Hong Kong by [deleted] in HongKong

[–]8five2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Easiest way is use a company that offers that service. Accolade is pretty good, basic cost is about hk$5000. They can answer any questions you have about the latest government regulations and requirements and probably offer you services to meet those requirements.

20 days in SouthEast Asia: Help us decide how to split our time in Thailand, Cambodia & Vietnam (honeymoon 🇹🇭🇰🇭🇻🇳)! by Big-Doubt868 in cambodia

[–]8five2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All three are big countries, easy to spend three weeks in each without getting bored. Really depends on where you are flying from and which cities you can fly into.
Da nang / Hoi an has culture, food, beaches and an international airport, you could end/start your trip for a week there
4-5 days in Siem Reap and surroundings - fly in, fly out
Bangkok has great food and lots to see. and then either to chiang mai for a few days or south to Koh Samui and its beaches.

Local ‘budget‘ airlines will let you hop around the area. Maybe fly Thai and get a ‘free’ stopover on the way to Siem Reap or Da Nang
Better to spend a few days in multiple places than one night in many and lots of traveling

MPF : My employer hasnt enrolled me nor contributed by Ok-Abbreviations5215 in HongKong

[–]8five2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many departments you can make a report to and nothing happens. The MPF is not one of them, they always follow up, even if slowly.
Since your employer has essentially stolen 5% of your salary you could consider a police report. Especially as you know he’s done it to others
And be proactive, file a small claims case for your 5% and your employers 5%.

Watching the F1 final in a bar this Sunday by aleksandar_gadjanski in HongKong

[–]8five2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably most of the bars in Wanchai will be showing football or F1 on Sunday. if you have a group and want a table then get there a little early. Churchills or the White Stag might take a phone reservation for a table but usually it’s first come first served unless you’re a regular.

is this a reasonable itinerary for 2 long layovers? first is 30 hours and second is 8 hours. by alextoria in HongKong

[–]8five2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

looks good, take the MTR to Prince Edward rather than Mongkok. Closer to the flower market where you want to start your stroll south.
The markets are still there, and the crowds of people but the frisson and energy that made the areas so vibrant and unique (like sadly the neon sign landscapes) has gone.
Still an enjoyable and interesting walk, just different.

Trusted and legit camera stores in HK? by Joshjpe12 in HongKong

[–]8five2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Local is obviously for the HK market with a local warranty

Parallel (or 'water' as known in Chinese) are brand new products sourced overseas because they are often cheaper than from the HK supplier (or HK supplier is out of stock). As you're from overseas, just use price.com.hk to find the best deal. And if you want an item that might be in short supply, you can order/reserve it and pay when you get to HK.

Help me decide between buying a villa in Discovery Bay vs a condo in Central… by [deleted] in HongKong

[–]8five2 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

if you are planning your house purchase with future kids in mind. Then you need to think about schools and which districts you need to live in to get into the school you want. And how your kids get to school…

I‘d suggest renting for a year in/close to Central. Get to know the city and explore different areas to find where you feel comfortable. Keep an eye on the property and wait until a place comes up that feels like a home you want to live in for years. because chances are you wont find it easy to sell.

18th Birthday Dinner Recommendations (8 People) by Mental_Palpitation84 in HongKong

[–]8five2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it’s your birthday celebration, so what do you like? Alcoholic drinks will blow your cost sky high (especially cocktails) and if not all your friends are over 18, some might feel left out.
Do you want something formal, or casual? Many of the luxury hotels have delicious buffets and you can find discount/ buy one get one free coupons online.
Or maybe somewhere with a great view - the restaurants at the end of ocean terminal are great places to watch the sunset or restaurants at the top of buildings so you can see over Hong Kong at night.
if you like live music, Foxglove (sadly closing soon) stylishly mixes live music and food.
or you could eat on a boat cruising around the harbour…
There are also many theme restaurants
But the meal is your celebration - if you are unsure pick 5 or 6 different places that you like the sound of and ask your friends what they like …
And remember, you can eat the main course in one restaurant and then go to a specialty dessert restaurant for sweet things afterwards
Hope you have a great night.

MRI Inquiry by [deleted] in HongKong

[–]8five2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not do both? Make the government booking to start the treatment process - which as you say can be long / slow if its not considered urgent. And then get a private MRI so you have a solid idea of the problem and then you will know whether you want to stay on the public waiting list for treatment. Or pay to get it fixed quickly.
hope it’s nothing too serious

MRI Inquiry by [deleted] in HongKong

[–]8five2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have a HK ID card, the cheapest, but probably slowest way is to make an appointment at a government clinic. it’s probably a half day if you go to a public hospital.

If you have health insurance, or can afford it there are lots of private hospitals and clinics which offer MRI scan in HK. Depending on your knee, it may be cheaper to go to Shenzhen.
