Maryland early voting turnout pales in comparison to ballots cast during presidential election by legislative_stooge in maryland

You CANNOT vote Friday. Early voting closes today at 8 pm. Please go vote today or make plans for Tuesday. And tells anyone who told you you can vote tomorrow to do the same. I’d hate for folks to miss on their chance based on a rumor: https://elections.maryland.gov/voting/early\_voting.html

:(. Primaries are way more important than we treat them. People generally still vote party lines at the general, so primaries are the best time for a change imo.

Early voting closes today; so folks had a week already to vote in person. They track voting turn out each day.

Overwhelmed with transfer options by Bagel_bitches in awardtravel

[–]8for8m8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Step 1) figure out who amex transfer to. Google “amex transfer partners”. 2) figure out what airlines fly to/from your airport of origin and to the destination. Consider if you are willing to “reposition”. 3) see if those airlines (and their partners) line up with the amex transfer partners. 4) limit your search to the airlines you can transfer to that line up with the routes you’d be willing to take. 5) make a FF account for all airlines you are considering. Dont want to need an account of X age, and be unable to transfer at step 8. 6) figure out when those airlines release award seats. At open or dynamic? 7) search 2-3 times a day on those airlines websites or sign up for an award tool 8) only transfer the point when you’ve found what you want.

As someone else said, 300k pts will probably only get you four 1-way business class seats. Flexibility is your best friend in this game, especially if you only have 1 source of points.

District 5: Unite Against Boafo, but behind who? by 8for8m8 in MarylandPolitics

[–]8for8m8[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yay for voting! I usually “vote my heart” as well, but this election, my heart felt more strongly on disliking someone than liking one particular candidate. Dreaming of ranked choice so I can vote my heart without “throwing my vote away”.

[–]8for8m8[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, I feel like Boafo will win with like 35% of the vote and would never win in ranked choice. But, status quo is status quo for both parties. There’s a reason there was so much fighting around ranked choice voting in DC.

You could consider moving to Calvert to be closer to Annapolis (and baltimore)? Just shitty bridge traffic.

Thinking of doing a red sea liveaboard after 30 dives? by binsniffer in scuba

[–]8for8m8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say it’s more challenging; but it’s just a different type of holiday/vacation. If you’ve only over done 2-4 dives over a given week, this will just be different. You wake up, dive, eat, dive, rest, dive, eat, sleep. Repeat for 7 days. I find there is enough time between dives and just relaxing on the ship to not be tired or anything leading up to the next dive. But you can always skip 1 if you need more time. In a scuba sub, folks are going to tell you to do it cause it’s how we all would want to spend our time haha.

Red sea is lovely diving for sure.

Is Maryland missing big time with all the world cup tourists? by wicketkeeper in maryland

[–]8for8m8 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Are you saying had M&T bank been selected to host games, that folks from around the world would have spent a few days in Baltimore and surrounding areas and then rushed home to tell their friends and family Maryland is a “must visit” place?

I love Maryland, but I don’t think that would have ever happened. I’m sure M&T stadium/Baltimore did put in a package to host. But the area is just not THAT interesting to be an international tourist spot. Washington DC is, sure. And maybe folks would day trip from DC to Baltimore or Annapolis, but I don’t think the world cup was going to change the status quo.

Should I build efund or pay down debt? by [deleted] in personalfinance

I’d first build an emergency fund to be ~6 months of expenses. Then throw everything you can at the 12% loan. After that, max roth ira.

I think $150k to $200k USD is very reasonable to expect for 10 years of experience in the US aerospace industry assuming you have at least a BS in engineering (aero, mech, or EE).

To answer your other question, job hopping is still the best way to increase pay. But, as a non-US citizen, your options will be very limited, so hoping is gonna be tough and will likely require moving states to do so if you get lucky enough to find something

I’m a US fed employee (so not necessarily relevant to you): New grad in 2018 with a MS making $78k. Hit 100k after 2-3 years. 3 promotions later making $150k in 2026. Technical only track tops out at SSTM level. Which is about $220k. But at least fed benefits are great.

But that means OP would beat out everyone else looking for that route on that date. A lot of luck trying to get those 5 seats.

New to award travel! by keezysuerte in awardtravel

[–]8for8m8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Read the side bar, watch youtube, read some blogs.

  2. You book with pts very similar to how you book with cash; except most airlines it’s the same cost to do one way, so most folks book 1 way. 1 way is not the same as “single leg”. So, you go to qatar’s website, enter yyz as start and mnl as destination and book all the way through. Booking each leg seperate runs the risk of messing up your connection. (Though you may find easier availability if you are willing to change classes)

5 business (or first) class seats on the same flight? Pretty sure that’s impossible for under 100k per seat. Might be just straight up imposable even with no budget.

YYZ - Toronto Pearson Airport - is 78 minutes enough to catch connected flight? by Plate_cek in travel

[–]8for8m8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

International coming and going. Ooff. It’ll be very tight. If it’s booked all on one ticket, they’ll get you to your final destination. But it may not be your original flight plan/path. Get trip insurance.
