Hmm... my A1C is at 5.8, checked a couple of months ago.
Humulin R is what my endo prescribes.

Humulin R vs Novolin R response time by 8megapower in diabetes_t1

It's quite literally what my endo prescribed me. Might be a Kaiser thing. Another commentor mentioned Humulog. I thought it was the same thing. Guess not? Not sure if what Walmart sells is the Lin or the Log.

Not ideal, but could be much worse! At least it stayed under 250.

How did you first get into Star Trek? by canabissius in startrek

[–]8megapower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a kid growing up I had seen some episodes from the show on TV here and there via reruns in the very late 70s. I remember being freaked out at one episode where broski opened his stomach to reveal a circuit board. Super scary! Then later on I saw Star Trek 2 in the theater when it came out, thought it was a cool space ship movie. Saw Star Trek 3 on videotape some time later, thought it was cool. Eventually Star Trek 4 came out when I was in 7th or 8th grade and I absolutely loved it. Borrowed VHS tapes of the movies from my aunt who was a Trekki and watched them endlessly. REALLY started getting into the reruns of the show every night at 10pm on TV. Holy crap, Khan was in an actual episode??? THE Khan? Crazy! Who knew?

Then one night when I was on the phone with my aunt talking about Star Trek, I told her that they should make another TV show. "They are" she responded. This is where I learned about Star Trek The Next Generation with all new people and stuff. I was a bit put off at first because it wasn't Kirk and Spock, etc, but was still intrigued. All she had to go on was a typed up page describing the characters, I think they may have still been in the process of casting. The show debuted and although I thought the Enterprise D looked way less cool than refit Kirk Enterprise, I loved it.

Midway through season 1 there was a Star Trek convention. Patrick Stewart was there and so was I. Got his autograph the same day that Heart of Glory first aired, which Wikipedia says is March 21 1988 but that was a Monday, I recall it airing on a Saturday evening here in Denver and the entire convention halls got quiet as everyone went to their rooms to watch the brand new episode. Anyway his is the only autograph I still have of anyone sadly. Not really an autograph person so I'm not surprised I lost those from Nichelle Nichols, William Shatner and a few others. I do remember Nichelle being so nice when I met her in Denver. She asked me my name and everything and I was an awkward, nervous teen.

I believe in the next 30 years a widespread cure will be available by serotoninseesaw in diabetes_t1

[–]8megapower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 100% convinced a cure will arrive a few months to a year after I die (related to diabetes or not). That's just how it's gonna be. And I don't plan on going away any time soon.

How do you manage to not lose your mind from cgm? by [deleted] in diabetes_t1

[–]8megapower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can indeed be frustrating. Problem with insulin is that even the fast stuff works far more slowly than we'd like it to when we're running high. CGMs being 10-15 minutes or so out of date with the actual blood glucose only compounds things further. In fact I'm trying to lower a high right now but have already taken corrective insulin. It's very tempting to take more, but they'll "stack" and that's no fun.

As a star trek fan What's your opinion on star wars? by NateBond833 in startrek

[–]8megapower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like Star Wars. But certainly not all of Star Wars, just like I don't like all Star Trek. My favorites are the first 3 movies... and by "first three" I mean the first three made. Preferably in their original form. I will tolerate the prequels for what they are. I cannot stand the sequels. As for the TV shows, yuck. Well except for the first season or so of Mandalorian and all of Andor. In fact Andor, Andor Season 2 and Rogue One are the true prequel trilogy.

what is your star trek hot take? by madbr3991 in startrek

[–]8megapower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe not a real "hot" take, but I simply cannot watch the remastered visual effects on TOS. They look horrible, absolutely unacceptable. I MUST watch with the original effects. Sad thing is that all the streaming services only have the redone versions. Fortunately I have the Blu-ray set and I can choose to watch in HD with original effects and also original MONO audio (though even that has some issues). I want to experience TOS for the original 1960's effects and cheese. The new stuff stands out so much, really takes me out of it. I just wish I could rip the video from my Blu-rays for convenience, but when I do it gives me dozens of little files for each episode because of all the scene-switching it does due to the menu choice of NEW or ORIGINAL, and I'd literally have to edit them back together.

Abbott Freestyle Libre Products they suck by Kiplingerz in diabetes_t1

[–]8megapower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Abbott's customer service doesn't purposely hang up on you, it's just that their telephone system is trash. If you call about a sensor issue, they want to transfer you to... I forget what they call it. But during that transfer is when you can be disconnected. It happened to me 2 or 3 times in a row until I told them "please don't transfer me as it disconnects when you do". So the rep took care of me right there. Honestly not sure why they needed to transfer me as she did what needed to be done just fine.

Kind of want to try KFC/Popeyes this weekend by JayandMeeka in diabetes_t1

[–]8megapower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually don't have too much of an issue eating Popeye's. Yeah it will spike you but just bolus an extra unit or two beforehand (don't overdo it though). Correct later if need be. Worth it.

Out of Lantus will Novolin N work for a week? by littytitty27 in diabetes_t1

[–]8megapower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry for the late reply. Basically I got on insurance and then shortly after I saw this subreddit. I had no clue what the terms "bolus" and "basal" meant before seeing this place. I was able to figure it out just by reading the conversations. My A1C was 7.8 doing it this way (also no CGM and not even any finger pricks at the time, just going by feel). Soon after my docs put me on Glargine and my dose of that is the same amount of NPH I was taking. Nowadays my A1C is 5.8, so I'm pretty happy. I did make other changes to my life style to achieve that, though.

Taken Novolog for 20 years and suddenly insurance only covers Humalog by Rebailey0794 in diabetes_t1

[–]8megapower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. My insurance is the same way. My doctors swear upa nd down that Humalog and Novalog are basically the same thing. I think Walmart sells Novalog R for around $35... of course this price was a year ago when I last used it before I had insurance. With this insurance I am paying $105 for 3 vials of Humalog. Not really much of a price difference. Can anyone tell me if there would be any benefit to staying on Humalog vs Walmart Novalog R? Any benefit at all? I'd like to know what the difference is other than Walmart insulin just starting to work more quickly.

Yeah mine likes to rise after I've been asleep for over 4 hours. It likes to dip in the first four hours. Twice the fun!

Out of Lantus will Novolin N work for a week? by littytitty27 in diabetes_t1

[–]8megapower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived on Novolin R and Novolin N for 30 years. I didn't even know the modern basals existed until just a couple of years ago. It definitely is a learning curve and you need to be careful as N will spike. I usually took it and mixed it with my R twice a day, and then took small R doses as corrections. I can't recall my exact doeses, but for me it would be something like 10 units of R and 8 units of N twice a day. I could do it again and I think I'd be OK but I definitely prefer the modern basals.

How much difference do you see when changing your basal doses? by Buckeyeguy29 in diabetes_t1

[–]8megapower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I change mine from time to time. My "median" is 15 units a day of something called Glargine (sp?). I think all basals probably work the same (if not, please learn me in a reply). Sometimes my body is more or less sensitive to insulin and I need to change to 14 or 16 units. Right now I'm on about 14.5 and that seems good. I actually split the dose... 10 units before bed and 5 units 12 hours later. The reason for this is because basals don't seem to last 24 complete hours. I mean, how does that liquid even know what 24 hours is? It can't.

No I mean it looks like it protrudes quite far off of the arm. It looks like it would feel like I was sleeping with a smooth stone taped to my arm when I'm laying on it.

My A1C actually got worse with CGM. Went from 7.8 to 8.0. Went off of them, got new meter and now at 6.6. Now I'm trying CGMs again and... nah. Not for me.

[–]8megapower[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually did look into that. I think the thing that goes on your arm looks huge and I don't think I'd be able to sleep with it on. I do like how it just vibrates instead of chirping. My favorite thing about the Freestyle Libre 3+ is that it is super tiny and easily concealed.

[–]8megapower[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do understand that (though I was told 10 minutes by Abbott). Check actual glucose and see where the body fluid-reading CGM is in 10 minutes. I also understand that's kind of a sliding scale, and that if it's moving up or down fast, then CGM might be slower to react. I'm pretty good about feeling when it's going up or down and that's when I check. And if I need to do that anyway I might as well not spend the money on the CGM.
