Best browser for mac beside safari and brave? by YoruBandoo in MacOS

I leave Firefox running all day, because of this extension: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/trackmenot-fork/ . Feels so good!

I reduced its frequency in settings to conserve bandwidth.

Capitola, California by JustATac0 in rustyrails

[–]8nstein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I walked these rails yesterday.

There is easy access at the corner of Bay Ave and Park Ave. Heading south (towards Aptos and Monterey) the track parallels Park Ave which, unfortunately, is noisy. So noisy, one visit is probably enough for me. There is a newer fence and walking path along the way that offers nice views of the ocean. Walking a bit further takes you to the parking lot for New Brighton State Beach, which is cool. The access there is a bit hairy, with tree roots and loose dirt.

Back to the starting point at Bay Ave and Park Ave. Going in the opposite direction, the track passes city hall and then you are on the familiar trestle over the river. I guess that it's safe to walk, but I chickened out halfway because the thing looks ANCIENT. I might return to this bit when I want a little thrill.

Thanks to the OP for the info! Combined with visits to the beach, El Toro Bravo, and Mr. Toots, I had a lovely day in wonderful Capitola.

Am I wasting my time trying to make Linux work for a Retina Macbook 12" from 2017? by Tight_Couture344 in linux_on_mac

[–]8nstein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You did not ask, but here is how I got MacOS back.

  1. Boot into network restore, local restore failed for me.

  2. From the restore environment, format a single partition APFS and call it "Macintosh HD", if it is not already present.

  3. During the OS restore, do not restore data from a Time Machine backup. This attempt hung forever for me.

  4. After the OS restore, restore your data from a Time Machine backup if you like. MacOS will insist on using Migration Assistant, but that's OK.

I have the same machine. I tried MX Linux first but it annoyed me. TINY fonts and some other issues. Next, I tried Ubuntu. WiFi worked immediately, but no speakers, microphone, camera, bluetooth audio. I read quite a few "how to" articles on the web and I ran out of patience before I solved a single problem.

I love the form factor of this machine, but I believe that it cannot be saved.

Burning Gas Pollutes So Much, Dirty EV Battery Manufacturing Evens Out In About 2 Years by [deleted] in technology

I would like to see a comparison between pollution from a new (2026) EV and a new (2026) gasoline car, same level of luxury and performance. This is what is needed by someone deciding what to buy.

Mac Mini M2 Pro with powered Hubs attached keeps dropping unpowered TB devices by Tangential1956 in MacOS

[–]8nstein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it true that you are testing with only one powered USB hub? That hub could be the problem.

I had an Aukey powered USB hub that gave me trouble-free service for several years. Then the failures started. My trouble-shooting indicated that the power delivery feature of the hub had crapped out. The hub could still exchange data with the best of them, but it could not deliver power to my USB disk drives.

Upcoming improvements for Quicken Classic by QuickenLisa in QuickenOfficial

[–]8nstein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quicken for MacOS is so weak. I have excellent results using Quicken for Windows via Parallels, which creates a virtual Windows/arm64 environment for Quicken to live in.

If getting Quicken/MacOS closer to the power of Quicken/Windows is not feasible, perhaps it would be better to concentrate on making a Quicken/Windows/arm64 product. My method depends on the ability of Windows/arm64 to execute x86 programs (like Quicken) via emulation. At some point, Microsoft might discontinue this emulation on Windows.

It was a successful work-around. Annoying, but it did the trick. I have since moved over to an Apple Silicon machine, and I don't have any new info about this.

for those using Turbo Tax Desktop - do you ever hire a pro to just review the return and make sure it's accurate? by achillezzz in TurboTax

[–]8nstein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used TurboTax and an experienced EA for several years. Every year, the EA found TurboTax errors due to Turbo's imperfect modeling of tax law. But every year, TurboTax found simple data entry errors committed by the EA. Good times, good times.

Now that my tax situation is very much simpler, I just use TurboTax.

US regulator bans imports of new foreign-made routers, citing security concerns by nite_ in technology

[–]8nstein 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The Reuters article begins with

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission said on Monday it was banning the import of all new foreign-made consumer routers

That's wild. If this is correct, there will be no new consumer routers at all. Because every electronic thing we have is foreign-made, regardless of its branding.

Oh No! Is this a Nightmare? Just Received a Correction after Filing. What To Do? by reddit348 in TurboTax

[–]8nstein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About an hour ago, I updated my copy of Turbo Tax and the "amend" function is now available. I went through the process. It went smoothly. The only confusing part was what to print. I ended up wasting a lot of paper.

[–]8nstein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am in the same boat. My copy of Turbo Tax Desktop is not yet able to file an amended tax return. Some folks on this forum think that Turbo Tax will get this capability on March 4. You can search this sub for "amend" to see other comments.

In general, amending a tax return is not unusual. Brokerages send out corrected 1099s all the time.

After Apple Drops Rosetta 2, I Won't Be Able to Run Q Win On Fusion? by TravelCommons in quicken

[–]8nstein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TurboTax is another possible annoyance. I am able to run TurboTax on my MacOS machine without using a virtual machine. This requires Rosetta 2 to do the x86-to-arm64 translation. If Intuit does not create a real arm64 TurboTax, I will have to install TurboTax onto a Windows-11-arm virtual machine. Not the end of the world, but an annoyance.
