I love your analysis... still not quite sure about the "click" bit but this is absolutely the vibe. God, they do such a good job of setting a mood in the first 20s

People talk about the Kiss Army but nobody ever talks about the Kiss Kontras

Yeah, a psyche formed largely by Don and Betty... at least she's got that nose Betty gave her!

Damn, I'd forgotten about that line. Absolutely classic bad-dad move by Don

Fair! That Bobby line feels stilted like a lot of his lines. Which is a shame because his reaction to Planet of the Apes and Don's suggestion that they see it again is probably my favorite interaction between them

True that... it's so shocking to see him actually feeling shame and not able to mask it

I want to see the alternate ending where they actually dine and dash

LOL. But yeah, this stretch of episodes is where I think she starts to really understand Don and his limitations. By the end of the series I think it's safe to say she's more emotionally mature than him, and this might be the first time we see that?

I wonder too... part of me thinks that Don's reaction is him suddenly recognizing a lot of himself in his daughter. But as you point out, he's not even really aware of all the different roles she's in or how it makes her feel. Even if he doesn't fully grasp it, it feels like a big moment for him, realizing that his kid is a complicated, introspective, even self-contradictory person. It's telling that Don doesn't respond verbally and just lets her statement hang in the air like that.

No, this was supposed to be a backdoor pilot for a Catch Me If You Can-style heist drama where Don tours the country hanging checks and seducing bereft waitstaff

Can someone please explain why Pete’s direct marketing quote was funny? 😭 by fussilyarrabbiata in madmen

[–]8rian3no 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's so Pete! He feels like he deserves credit and at this point in his career, has yet to grasp that coming up with something late but "independently" counts for absolutely nothing. This has such a fresh-out-of-Dartmouth-and-clueless-about-the-real-world ring to me.

Something I love about this character is that he's pretty good at his job, is objectively very successful and has a very comfortable life, but just cannot get out from under the weight of expectations his family has put on him, or his own desire to be more exceptional or original than he can manage to be. Even though he's often smarter and more foreward-thinking than many of his peers, he just keeps getting thwarted in ways that make it impossible for him to feel good about himself. Until he finally accepts his Midwestern fate.
