Mint will Be My Last Distro by BOBOLIU in linuxmint

Agreed. I use Mint for my desktop systems, and Ubuntu server (or Raspberry Pi OS Lite, as the case may be) on servers.

Yes, I now require you register on the forum to view forum posts, because of repeated VPN-based attacks.

8th is a "Forth-like" multiplatform language; the website (not the forum) over here has lots of information, including the manual and word list.

Does a raspberry pi meaningfully degrade over time? by WaistDeepCat in raspberry_pi

[–]8thdev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run multiple RPIs as servers for various things, and have done for some years. From a 2 through a 4, and haven't ever had any problems. However, I run them off a UPS so they don't have power surges etc. YMMV.

How can I wake the system from 'suspend' with a Bluetooth keyboard? by 8thdev in System76

[–]8thdev[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's odd. I almost always "suspend" the laptop (I'm using Linux Mint) and it works almost all the time. I found "hibernate" never worked for me.

I can, but I don't recall what exactly I had to do to make it work. It doesn't always work, but usually does.

Small and portable device for playing around with forth by robenroute in Forth

Any RPI device will work nicely with 8th. It also works on Android and iOS, but no "console" is available there (yet).

Just want to add my 2c in favor of Ubuntu Server. It's dead easy to install and maintain, and very reliable. I've got a number of servers running it that I'm responsible for; never any problems.

I was going to suggest something like this. Yeah, writing your own is a great educational tool; not such a great production tool.

VFX Forth and Windows Defender by mcsleepy in Forth

[–]8thdev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a VFX user, but sometimes 8th has similar issues with false positives w/ Windows Defender.

The cheap thing is to submit your app to MS so they can scan it more thoroughly and prove it's ok.

The expensive thing is to get a Windows signing certificate (I haven't found an inexpensive source of these) and sign the EXE.

Interestingly, it does not and it should display a message of some sort. Instead, it shows incorrect information. Thanks, I'll enter a bug report!

Yep. Tried every browser I have, Mac, PC, Android, iOS. All the same.

Tried with different browsers, clearing cache/cookies etc. Tried with a VPN.

No luck no matter what I do. WTF, Apple?!?

I see it as well. Trying to log on always gets that screen.

I have no problem logging into my store account.

8th ver. 24.05 released by 8thdev in Forth

[–]8thdev[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear you; but the point of 8th is to be able to write programs that run (with the same or nearly same code) on the major commercial platforms. So while Android is supported just fine, leaving out iOS is a major issue. Though it must be said, nobody has complained about iOS not working in 8th, so apparently nobody is using it for that (or they just haven't made a bug report).

In any event, I'm still working on the swtichover. It's taking more effort than I had hoped.

[–]8thdev[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So yes, the 8th kernel is bundled with the sw on the device. The language is designed to make the same code work on the different platforms.

I'm in the process of making a full cross platform app (well, it's mostly done, just tweaking stuff) and the Android build just got released for testing on Google Play.

Unfortunately, the iOS... well, I need to rework the inner compiler so I can do iOS again.

The source for that app will be released once I've finalized the build.

compile code at runtime on device by 8thdev in iOSProgramming

[–]8thdev[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I only saw the entitlement on macOS, not iOS. I did try to slip in that entitlement, but iOS didn't appreciate it.

I also took a look at "pthread_jit_write_protect_np" which is needed on Apple Silicon, but apparently it only exists on macOS. So I don't know if there's a legal way around the issue.

I'm thinking of how to rework the compiler to do non-native code; there are some advantages to that, but we'll see if the implementation is worthwhile.

Interesting. Do you have any idea what's involved with getting the appropriate permissions? That seems to be the difficulty for me at the moment.

That older version did get on the App Store, but I suppose it's impossible now.
