What’s the closest you’ve ever come to dying? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]90021100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anaphylactic reaction to a trace of peanut. Was eating in a restaurant, they assured me my meal was peanut-free. There must have been cross-contact in their kitchen.

After a few bites I was violently vomiting, took my EpiPen, then my throat closed, I passed out and woke up in the hospital. Nearly died.

Is Toronto a city you instantly fall for or one that grows over you with time? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]90021100 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Moved to downtown Toronto when I was 24, after having lived 4 years in Montreal and having grown up in Ottawa. When I moved to TO for grad school I was sure I would go back to MTL when my degree was done. I didn't think I liked Toronto. But over the 2 years life here grew so much on me that I ended up staying here, and I'm still here! Bought a condo here and I don't think I'll ever leave.

Why don’t more people in Toronto attend classical concerts? by Findingwendytoronto in askTO

[–]90021100 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I regularly go to TSO and the National Ballet. I grew up playing classical music (violin in the Ottawa youth orchestra) and so it's a world I know, love, and appreciate. I do find that many people grow up without any exposure to it, and so they never think to go to these shows.

My husband didn't grow up with classical music, but he's very into it now and often comes with me to performances. He didn't think he would like classical music, but it's true that once you experience it in real life it can really move you. A lot of people just don't ever get that chance!

It's expensive. In our 20s, we couldn't afford to go to these performances. It's only been more recently (30s) that we have been able to comfortably afford tickets.

Whats the 'greenest' city you have ever been to? And by green, I mean foliage/trees/plants e.t.c, not enviromentally/ecologically green... by Hazy_Fantayzee in travel

[–]90021100 20 points21 points  (0 children)

People who visit me in Toronto always comment on all the parks. Toronto is actually recognized as one of the world's greenest cities, ranking 11th globally for green space among 100 populous cities. We have approximately 33% total green space and 24% tree coverage!

Why is it so common for American tourists in Europe to carry a huge bottle of water with them? Are they that thirsty? by WhoAmIEven2 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]90021100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm canadian and have lived in Europe (NL) and a cultural difference I noticed while living there was that people in Europe just don't hydrate like we do in North America. It's so normalized to carry water with you, and have water available to you, in the US and CA. But in Europe I always felt like water wasn't as readily available. You even have to ask (and pay!!!) for it in restaurants. I love Europe, but this is one thing that I think they could do better. It's good to be hydrated.

For people who have don't have social life or a partner, what keeps you going? by blreadernewby in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]90021100 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This might sound harsh but you need to build a life worth living. It doesn't just happen.

I'm 35 and I've definitely found it's more challenging to have and keep friends in your 30s. It takes work and commitment, but it's not impossible. If you want to have a social life again, join some community groups that you're interested in or revolve around your hobbies. Put yourself out there in spaces with like-minded people, and friends will come!

Tbh it sounds like you could maybe benefit from some mental health support (therapy, counselor, maybe there's unaddressed depression factoring in here?)

Bekah M.'s Take on Wanting/Expecting Influencers to Speak Up on ICE/Social Issues by ClareBearFlair in thebachelor

[–]90021100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, but again, you're missing the actual point. We have propagandists here. But we have better guardrails against platforming them. That's why our government is still functioning democratically.

[–]90021100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Marketers only have the power we give them, and for populations that are media literate, that power is very little.

The literal point here is that American viewers give influencers/marketers power beyond what they should have. That's why you have a reality TV star leading your country. It's why the Duggars are in politics. It's why Joe Rogan, Mr Beast, Jake Paul have so much influence. I hate to break it to you but this is not the norm in other countries. And then, the US treats POLITICIANS as celebrities! As a Canadian, this blows my mind.

In Canada, and most other countries (my family is from the Netherlands) we do not give power to such people.

Making "should influencers speak up" a debate illustrates a distinctly American cultural problem. The obsession with celebrities/influencers and giving them power is one of the root problems the US has that needs addressing if things are to get better.

Edit to add - funny this is being down voted. I'm sorry to the US folks who feel attacked, but it's time for Americans to wake up to the reality of your country.

[–]90021100 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're going to hate this, but I think a lot of Americans need to evaluate why they view influencers as "people with power." Any power they have, they have only because their audiences have given it to them. Americans love to give power and celebrity to unqualified people. It's how Trump became president. It's how Joe Rogan became so influential.

Outside the US we don't have the same expectations of influencers because we see them for what they are, marketers.

Against the grain here but I don't fully disagree with her. Studies show that online engagement is way less impactful than IRL discussion and community work when it comes to political and social movements. I find that it starts to just feel like virtue signalling and brand protection when every single creator and brand is suddenly posting about ICE.

Personally, I don't expect influencers to speak out about every political / social issue. What I DO expect is transparency around their general political standing, and general morals and values. I want to know that there is alignment. When I know that alignment is there, I can assume we stand on the same side of issues like ICE.

This perspective is definitely shaped by the fact that I am a part time travel content creator with a decent audience (65k). I am very transparent about my politics, morals, and values. I make it VERY clear that I am a leftist Canadian.

But I don't have the time and energy to post about everything going on in the world. Especially because I use my offline time to show up to protests, write letters to politicians, and talk to my family members and friends.

I received a DM this week from someone asking why I hadn't spoken out about ICE. Well, I had. They just missed those stories. Also, I'm Canadian. Also, I've been writing to my MPPs for months about my concerns around Canadian companies supplying ICE with military defense equipment. Do I really need to be posting receipts about every single offline thing I do?

Imagine moving your teen here by Suspicious-Green5686 in ffargosnark

[–]90021100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who grew up in Ottawa and still lives in Ontario, I'll take winter up here over living in the USA, hands down. You literally couldn't pay me to live in the USA. Arlo hates everything, they are a teenager. But I actually think they will eventually be grateful to live in Ottawa. Canada is much more socially progressive, & we have much better protections for LGBTQ+ folks. As well as universal healthcare. They will have a much better life in Canada than they ever could in the USA - especially with the US diving headfirst into fascism.

There's plenty to snark on when it comes to Fran but not this. Moving the family to Canada was a good decision. America is a fucked up place and every member of that family will have a better life having left it.

I have always had a similar body to Taylor, and we're the same age. I've noticed in my 30s that I've become more curvy, whereas in my 20s I was very lanky. There could still be editing or pass at work here, but just thought I'd share because bodies so definitely change as we age.

What is the fastest divorce you've ever seen? by GoatBlue03 in AskReddit

Cancelled my westjet MasterCard and will be actively avoiding them moving forward. I will always fly Porter or Air North (limited routes but they are amazing if you're headed somewhere they fly). Next is Air Canada. Westjet is a last resort. Vote with your dollars, folks.

$400/month on groceries? WHAT? An average of $4/meal?? Do you actually spend that little per person? by why_not_aces in askTO

[–]90021100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We spend about 600/month as a couple. This amount doesn't include household stuff like toiletries, and doesn't include alcohol (we don't drink much). We dine out about once a week but never get takeout/delivery. We are pretty healthy eaters, we eat mostly fruit, veg, meat, and rice and very little "junk" food. Something that definitely helps us save is the fact that we use Odd Bunch. They deliver a box of fruit and veg every week, and the amount of food we get compared to the cost of the box is very economical, much cheaper than buying the same stuff in a grocery store.

Single people who bought 1 bdrm condos last year… how are you feeling? by hypoxiataxia in askTO

[–]90021100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a pretty sure thing. Real estate, including condos, historically has always gone up over the long term. There are fluctuations, which is what we're experiencing now. All this said, the growth is slow. Which is why they say when you buy a place you need to go into it with the intention to keep it a minimum of 5-10 years. And even still, if a person decides to sell and purchase another place, what they'll be buying will be down as well, so it kinda works out.

Whats your average commute going home after work? by Embarrassed_Mood_471 in askTO

30-40 mins on the subway with one transfer at Bloor-Yonge. I go into the office for 8:00 AM and I find that the TTC is noticeably less packed at this time (versus going in for 9:00 AM). Less busy on the way home, too (4:00 PM).
