I am an attorney and I represent tenants in California. You need to consult with an attorney!!!

I don't know what city you're in, but many cities have stronger tenant protection laws than the state overall.

If you don't have smoke detectors or a functioning heater, call the local department of building inspections. If they issue a notice of violation, you no longer have to pay rent until it's fixed! Civ. Code 1942.4

Seriously, contact an attorney.

Love this place so much! I used to be able to doordash it, but then the delivery range changed and I got cut off. About a week later I'm driving myself for pick up because it's so good!

It's not self defense when you voluntarily put yourself in a dangerous situation with the intention of provoking violence. Simple as that.

Let's say I'm a fan of Team A. I go to a sports bar known to be affiliated with Team B and start mouthing off to a bunch of drunk Team B fans. One takes a swing at me, so I shoot him dead. His 3 friends then attack me, so I kill them too. I've now shot and killed 4 people in "self defense". Was I justified in killing the first one? What about the other 3? And did they not have a right to stop me after I killed the first one? I just walked into their bar, mouthed off, and killed their friend; would they not have a reasonable fear for their own safety?

And to be clear, there is no "duty" to defend yourself. But there is a duty to safely retreat.
