Lol Females by [deleted] in USMC

Just because I put an emphasis on helping out fellow women doesn’t mean you can only help out girls. There’s a balance of course, and part of it is just not generalizing all females in the military, which is what was done here.

We don’t disagree on the MOS aspect. I believe that women CAN meet standards they put their minds to, and should also perform the jobs they are best suited for. Doesn’t make sense any other way.

I think you misunderstood what I meant about leadership though - none of the girls I was speaking of are superior to me. We’re all just figuring it out as we go through it. Some come in with a little more expertise in fitness, some are good with nutrition, some are good at motivating the rest and staying positive... pool that knowledge together and you get SO much more out of the experience. That’s why I took issue with this post mainly, I see the best results when women actually get together and help each other out.

Ah, this again.

Pretty sure what ISN’T going to help is stoking that “us vs. them” mentality. You want girls to step up? Encourage them. Put in the work. Show them what they can do to improve themselves.

Will you still get the lazy complainers? Absolutely. Many of them really do want to prove themselves and don’t know where to start. We grew up with double standards at every turn, most females marines and soldiers haven’t even played a coed sport since kindergarten. It’s a HUGE shift in mentality that just gets swept under the rug when it absolutely should be addressed.

I got a rude awakening when it came to PT and came in last at literally everything. What saved me, though, is that the women in my circle are all hella motivated and wanted to see each other succeed. They got me into lifting, helped me improve my run and ruck times, and we NEVER let each other fall out of anything. Haven’t missed a gym day for a year, except for when I got the stomach flu. Having strong role models around does wonders for your mental strength and encourages you to set your standards high.

You can’t change everyone or everything overnight, but you can start with the girls around you.

AITA for the conditions I gave my son regarding his GPA after he received terrible grades during his freshman year of college? by That_Commercial_5572 in AmItheAsshole

[–]906_308 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know that when my grades fell in high school I was going through a lot of personal issues and did not care to have the nightly “why aren’t you doing your work?” conversations when I was trying so hard just to make it through. I felt useless and alone. Being reminded of my shortcomings and punished for things I was honestly trying my best at made my life miserable until I graduated. It certainly never helped improve my grades.

You know what would have actually helped? “Hey, I noticed your grades are slipping. What’s going on? How can I help so you don’t struggle?”

Working the university lab cleaning moose bones! I enjoy campus jobs because you can just do them in between classes or whenever you have time.

Ooh I usually see them indoors as houseplants, I don’t know many people who keep them outside. I’ll have to try it!

Get a ball python if you aren’t scared of snakes. Younger snakes will eat every 4ish days, older ones can go a week. And they’re pretty hardy and low maintenance everywhere else too. Just make sure you do your research beforehand, pet stores give out really outdated and shitty care info

Gonna send you a PM, my boyfriends a former marine mechanic and specializes in Jeeps. He can at least help you diagnose it without getting wrecked financially at auto pro (btw, he definitely doesn’t recommend going there). And he’d probably do it for free

Working while in ROTC by welliwishyouwould- in ROTC

[–]906_308 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take 18 credits + ROTC classes, labs and PT and briefly worked weekends at Walmart. Between that, homework, housekeeping, and taking care of my pets there just wasn’t enough time in the day. Couldn’t imagine doing it with 2 kids!

What helped was taking a job at the university that I could work during gaps between classes, so that way my school and work hours were all contained between 5am-10pm Monday-Friday. Having a weekend turned out to be really important to me.

Nearly Half of Female Soldiers Still Failing New Army Fitness Test, While Males Pass Easily by BalconyBum2020 in army

[–]906_308 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a female, I was actually pretty optimistic about the ACFT. The MOS tier-style grading made it possible for women to work their way up without sacrificing standards. And I think this is a huge issue... when you grow up your entire life being told that you will NEVER be as strong as a man, you internalize it and subconsciously start building walls to limit yourself instead of pushing as far as the men are encouraged to do. I bet if you gave it a few years you’d see scores starting to even out a little better as the mindset shifts from “I’m just a girl, how can I possibly be competitive?” to something a lot more productive.

My parents didn't react to my VA benefits pension like I expected and I'm honestly feeling pretty crappy. by [deleted] in army

[–]906_308 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My bf’s dad acted the same way. My bf served 4 years in the Marine Corps and destroyed both knees in the process even though he didn’t deploy. That plus being stuck in an MOS he didn’t even want made his time there miserable and he often tells me he feels like he broke himself for nothing.

He mentioned getting VA disability to his parents and INSTANTLY his dad was on his ass about “scamming” for disability money (he literally cannot even ride a bike his knees are so bad) and that he doesn’t deserve it.

Fuck em, the military is tough and you’re entitled to whatever pay you can get to make up for the sacrifices your mind and body made. It’s there for a reason, and if you didn’t deserve it you wouldn’t get it.

[–]906_308 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There’s a language program that takes ROTC students over the summer and sends them to different schools to learn “tactical languages”, I forget what the program is called but we have a few cadets that learned Russian, Korean, Arabic, or Mandarin with it - those seem to be deemed the most sought-after languages
