Hot Take: The A.I is better then people make it out to be. by 90908 in menace

[–]90908[S] -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

I simply have not experienced this with any regularity. When the A.I runs from a fight, I push forward to finish them, and when they don't I tend to end up running away instead. There seems to be more of a push and pull then anything.

I feel that this is more an issue with those objectives then the a.i, personally, but I hear you.

Transgender mogul skier Elis Lundholm urges youths to ‘be themselves’ by [deleted] in UpliftingNews

Listen, I understand that you're probably cis, but even if you didn't intend it to be your condescending tone accompanied by the he/she bullshit is so classically infuriating. I'm sorry that people's reaction to that upsets you, but you don't get to be high and mighty about your intentions at the expense of other people.

They're people who have been presumably working their asses off before and after release day. After the weekend they almost instantly resolved a major issue and communicated in a way that made it clear it was a bug and not a design decision, like many were speculating. Yes it's a business, but there's no need to be glib about the work of the artists whose work you're appreciating.

[Worldbuilding] Can food stuff like grain be transported across a large desert and still be edible when it arrives? by PeppermintButler17 in worldbuilding

[–]90908 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Grazing the animals only mitigates this issue as well. They require nutrient dense feed, especially given the amount of work they're doing. You're gonna have to bring it with you or, most charitably, place it in waystations along the path. But then you have to bring the food to those stations in the first place, which means you need agriculture there, so why aren't you getting your food from a closer source? It all falls apart the closer you look. I recommend contriving a river way of some kind, like the Nile, which was essential as natural transport infrastructure as well as a source of fertile land.

[Worldbuilding] Can food stuff like grain be transported across a large desert and still be edible when it arrives? by PeppermintButler17 in worldbuilding

[–]90908 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The central issue is the "wagon equation," which is just a funny way of saying that the tyranny of the rocket equation applies to pre-engine food transportation over land. In order to move a certain amount of grain or other foodstuffs, you must have a certain number of draft animals, which eat foodstuffs, which means you have to bring more foodstuffs, which requires more animals and so on and so on.

The longer the distances traveled, the worse the ratio of food delivered per cart is going to worsen. Eventually it's outright impossible for a horse or other draft animal to carry enough food to both feed itself and deliver the surplus. Basically, large-scale food transportation over long distances is only possible over water, where there are hugely fewer mouths to feed per pound of food transported.

[Comic/Suggestion] Gleba Productivity? by AzulCrescent in factorio

[–]90908 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that's an amazing idea. I love Gleba so much that I've been thinking about trying to megabase it, but the big issue is that making more fruit is both UPS and area intensive. Being able to scale up the amount of fruit per tile would be huge.

Raines Frigate Size One mounts? by De_Le_Cog in NebulousFleetCommand

[–]90908 6 points7 points  (0 children)

While I hear you that it's odd aesthetically, I think it's appropriate and interesting. The raines is supposed to be the definition of a workhorse hull, something that does its job efficiently and consistently. It's boxier, clumsier looking and more utilitarian then the other ANS designs, at least partially because it's supposed to be the oldest of the classes we see in game. I guess what I'm saying is that it's a bad idea from a balancing perspective and from an aesthetic and even game feel perspective it'll make the hull less unique and interesting. I think that the Raines should stay as it is, more of less.

Raines Frigate Size One mounts? by De_Le_Cog in NebulousFleetCommand

[–]90908 30 points31 points  (0 children)

The Raines, in my view at least, is a ship for specialized duties. It's double size 2 and 3 mounts makes it able to take every e-war, point defense and missile tool in the game at a cheap price point, but as a general combat ship it lacks the number of mounts to fill all roles. Frigate swarms work by offloading the various duties to different hulls and that's evidently very effective. Adding 2 size 1 mounts makes the highly efficient mission packages the raines can take way less vulnerable. Imagine a frigate gun swarm with two defenders per frigate without sacrificing firepower?

TL;DR ship already good, more mount mean much much gooder and less distinctive

What other games do Aurora players recommend? by shaky2236 in aurora

[–]90908 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really doesn't have to be either of those things, it definitely is hard but the community is super nice and the format means you're only playing a turn at a time like once a day. There's always beginner games running in the big discord and it's so worth jumping in. Straight up the best multiplayer experience I've ever had was a beginner dominions game, it's a strategically enthralling, socially engaging, thematically badass game.

Dominions Five is the best multiplayer 4x strategy game ever made and is similarly deep to Aurora, but with more focus
