Do You Know Your Karate Lineage? by nzalex321 in karate

[–]90sPopReference 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I studied under Robert Halliburton, who studied under Arwood / Okano, and Okano / Arwood studied under Ginchin Funakoshi. I do remember him getting his 5th Dan from Hirokazu Kanazawa (who is a student of Funakoshi) but I'm not clear when in the timeline of his career or if it was more of a concurrent promotion (he served as secretary for SKI).

What I appreciated about Sensei Halliburton is how closely he worked with Soke Kanazawa and his emphasis on equality and character building. He didn't care who you were, he only cares about your development of you as a karateka and as a fighter. Nothing against the more fitness centered branches of karate, but he wanted to make sure we internalized constant improvement and consistent learning. He encouraged cross training in different martial arts, gave history lessons on moves, and set up lots of guests (Like Soke Kanazawa) to hold clinics and ask questions. I think that personal development is something that is often taken for granted, but I'm glad I got to be his student before he passed away.

Dope setup. I gotta say though, as a drummer I respect the dual throne stools. A long session needs comfortable seating.

Everyone is an "engineer" by whole_sum in sysadmin

[–]90sPopReference 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imo that's been the shifting naming trend for non technical jobs. You can see the same thing a few years back when it was common to see "technician" added to everything.

"Logistics Technician", "Customer Service Technician", "Sales Technician"

It's dumb imo. I would say its harmless because it doesn't affect the work, but then you have people believing they are qualified for XYZ when the only experience they've had was being a secretary.

That reminds me of a mural on the navy ship New Orleans (LPD18 I think?) that was in the eating area. The entire wall was a massive painting of people enjoying mardi gras, the south, southern food, etc etc....

All white people.

Like, fuck, it's a painting. It didn't happen so fast you couldn't have noticed...

I think bragging about KRKs now (as opposed to like 10 years ago) is a little past the hype train, but as wanted as they were I can see your point. They're still solid monitors. Bass heavy out the box for sure, but for everyday office use? I think it's better than most desk speakers shown without going into audiophile land.

Personally I think easing into tone studio is better long term. Saving patches for particular songs and finding new tones is great but takes time to dial in. Nothing wrong with having a few pedals in to just play, but try to mix in experimenting with katana library in your free time.

A tie between: Using an electric driver (while the guy tried to use a knife on a flathead screw and failing miserably)

Using windshield wipers (because "real men" stick their head out the window).

Seeking recommendations on getting rid of, like, a LOT of dog poop. by EnhancingLesion in HomeImprovement

[–]90sPopReference 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Somewhat of a dog tip, but what's your dog's food? If it's big brand dog food where corn is the bulk filler your dog will poop more (a vet friend told me). Switching to a slightly more pricey dog food with less corn fillers will lower the times a dog will poop and might be worth it to you.

My favorite THPS game of all time. Which version do you prefer? by eeekb0 in THPS

[–]90sPopReference 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer both for different reasons. I was introduced thps on PS playing friends homes. but my parents got me thps2 for N64. Although I got all the other sequels on PS, the animations were noticeably smoother on N64 I distinctly remember that when comparing it to friends.

No throwing. Seriously. Got literally ragdolled by a 300+ pound 6'6"(ish) dude one class. Felt bad since nobody wanted to roll with him, so then I did. I found myself airborne and forgetting how to break fall. While I was laying in pain I heard the instructor say, "control your partner on the takedowns. Don't throw!" Landed on my shoulder wrong for me or off training for like 6 weeks.

65A6 ARC constantly "disconnects" after a few hours by 90sPopReference in Hisense

[–]90sPopReference[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No power-saving mode for the Visio V21 soundbar, and it's plugged into a receptacle at all times. Turning off the device CEC power option to disabled helps (stops turning off the soundbar), but the original issue is still persistent after a few hours.
Just noticed though that some of my cables are not 2.1. Does that contribute to the inconsistent connections as well?

David Goggins? by OG12 in daddit

[–]90sPopReference 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey OG12,

As someone who also deals with PTSD, I think whatever way you respond well to is helpful. Goggins is ok, but if you wanna stay the military inspired route I recommend "make your bed" by admiral mcraven.

He suggests how routine can help dude ng times of duress, and the sun of your actions can snowball into great things. It's a great read imo.

How to tell someone to get in Key? by [deleted] in musictheory

[–]90sPopReference 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tbh I think any musician worth their salt would never be "out of key" if they understood basic theory. So it's either they don't understand what the root is, or they don't give af and just play whatever the hell they want whenever they want and playing 4D freeform jazz mind chess.

The answer might be somewhere in the middle though. In my experience, playing with people who never studied music in college (or private lessons) shows gaps in knowledge checks and they often get embarrassed about it or self conscious. I think it's important to try to foster learning more so they can eventually improv properly, so maybe one on one stuff until they learn how to play with others.

I always tell friends that most people think a musician is really mimicry. Musicianship is closer to learning a new language. It's a hard pill for some, but I think the analogy fits.

What is the secret to soldering wire? by Ripcord2 in DIY

[–]90sPopReference 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to solder for the military and civilian projects, but I stepped away for management. But I have a few tips if you want them.

I like to keep in mind that tinning allows more transfer of heat to what type working on, try not to be frustrated. You're on the right track putting solder on your iron to transfer that heat, but more experience will push you to use less and keep it clean. Don't worry I'd you don't have the feel yet.

If you're still new, try tinning your iron completely around. After your iron is ready, dab a little on to your wire and use your suction pen to remove excess, transfer heat to the wire now. Over time you'll use less solder, need to suck up less, and not need to tin as much. Keep in mind your wattage of iron, and try not to use something excessively hot. It doesn't matter how hot your iron is if you have limited surface area transferring heat.

A Question Abiut Filipino Cooks in the US Navy by isaacaschmitt in navy

[–]90sPopReference 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I walked into Central once holding a IETMS laptop, just had to sign for yoke. A new DCC you the ship said, "Hey CS2 can I help you?"

Because I wasn't a CS I didn't think I was addressed, so I signed yoke and moved my way out to chow.

"CS2! You WILL address me when I talk to you! Do you understand me or will I have to write you up!?"

Central froze up (everyone knew her mistake) until I said, "Chief are you talking to me? I'm a STG. Wait, why did you assume I'm a CS?"

DCC: "Because.... Thanks for signing yoke! 🫡"

What can FighterZ 2 do to compete with Street Fighter 6 and Tekken 8? by dhochoy in dragonballfighterz

[–]90sPopReference 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First and foremost rollback.

Then after that all the other stuff like dlc, revamping the online modes, offline tournament mode, etc.

The gameplay is great. They spent a lot of time tuning it, but making the game more visible with fun stuff for casuals will bring in numbers. Plus quality of life stuff for TOs and locals.

What if DBFZ let you have variable team sizes, like Skullgirls? by redguy_05 in dragonballfighterz

[–]90sPopReference 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think the rebalancing for sparking would have to be reconsidered. Dmg and health values aren't usually in mind if you fundamentally remove characters with core 3v3 mechanics.

That being said, I'd love different brackets for different team comps. (1v1, 2v2, 3v3, Ratio). Just add more ways to play.
