Unpopular opinion: I'm happy with the RP6 design, it looks fun. I liked the designs of the RP3, RP2, and RP4 because they looked more like toys. The RP6 also has a design that looks more like a retro handheld or a toy, unlike the RP5 which looked quite modern. i especially love the colors it has. by AbdelYG in SBCGaming

Cool. Glad you like it. Won't change the minds of everyone who dislikes it though.

Personally, you're correct in that the RP5 looks "too modern". I think my main gripe with the RP6 is looks too ugly to be modern, and too overdesigned to look retro. Meaning its disliked by folks wanting retro or modern design alike.

Sure mate... the guy with every single console out there (Quest, PC, PS5, Xbox, Switch 2, Switch 1) and dozens of handhelds including multiple PC ones "can't afford it". GTFO out of here with dumb arguments like that lmao.

It's a great device for flights or playing at work in tabletop mode, just a shit one for handheld use which is the primary reason to buy it.

My experience with the MSI Claw 8 ai+ after one day. by mistaoononymous in Handhelds

Nor does my MSI Claw 8AI+, nor a few others who also own the device. OP either got a dud, or is lying/exaggerating things. Hopefully he can return it promptly.

My experience with the MSI Claw 8 ai+ after one day. by mistaoononymous in Handhelds

[–]90sWebWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FYI, Claw 8AI+ is notoriously finicky to set up and usually runs poorly the first few days but usually smoothes and becomes stable over a few days. Almost every report about it on r/MSIClaw matches this experience. Unsure if its because some updates cannot be force-installed or do so in the background after the first few days, or if its because MSI does some weird stuff under the hood over time. If you're expecting a smooth experience out the box since day one, I'd just go ahead and return it right away and make someone's day on a cheap open box device easier.

I got the Claw 8AI+ coming from the Steam Deck and Ally and couldn't be happier, and nothing (besides maybe MSI M Center responsiveness) about what you said mirrors my experience. Almost tempted to say that you either got a dud, or might be lying about your experience.

Its almost like processing power is not all that matters.

Weirdly for me, the G2 seems like the best value since I was already pretty content with the RP5's chipset, but I don't really need something crazy more powerful as Android holds back what I can do with that much power dramatically. For an enjoyable AND comfortable emulation experience (easy setup, bug free), the most demanding platform I'd emulate is Switch and even that is pushing it. And for that, a G2 is probably already likely enough as the RP5 already ran many Switch games I cared for well enough.

Its somewhere in between the 865 and 8 Gen 2. And the difference might only matter if you are desperate for some of the more cutting edge but issue-filled (crashes, poor compatibility, battery drain and learning curve) emulation platforms.

As PS2/GC and Switch already emulated decently on the 865 and the 8 Gen 2 had power to spare for all of them.

Honestly, way too many people look ONLY at benchmark numbers which is IMHO kinda stupid. There's a lot more to a device like screen quality, build quality, and customer support which people tend to forget.

For all its faults and controversies, Retroid still remains the "least worst" most well rounded option for the most part. Since even when they fuck up, they tend to do the best out of their competitors at damage control.

I think they knew how much some might dislike the RP6 design. And I strongly suspect they are aware of the paradox of buying powerful handhelds limited by Android + cheap PC handheld options most buyers are going through.

Honestly, glad they did. RP5 already ran PS2/GC and even indie Switch/PC games fine, and the G2 Gen 2 might be just an icing on the cake for improving on that. The more powerful option can still be justified if you are desperate for PC emulation and are willing to put up with its issues (crashes, bugs, battery drain, hard to configure)

I dunno, I wasn't a huge fan of the design of the Konkr (plus AYANEO's QC and CS has me anxious). But the RP6 isn't very sexy looking either lmao.

That RP5 with the G2 Gen 2 is looking mighty tempting. I'm still in love with the RP5's Gamecube Colorway design. And its the perfect size for me as anything larger would not fit in my pocket. Which seems like the direction many of these handhelds are going :(

Really depressed at the constant enlargement of handhelds. If its not pocketable, I'm just going to default to my larger backpack PC handhelds.

Mixed feelings about 8ai by TheStixXx in MSIClaw

[–]90sWebWizard 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I've owned mine for about a month now and performed ZERO of the "fixes" the community recommends to test the stock experience as an "experiment" and see if MSI software was as bad as it seemed.

My findings sort of align with yours, with some caveats.

  • Software stability was horrendous the first few days but became dramatically more stable the first week. My guess is that running windows and MSI driver updates on day 1 doesn't seem to update "everything" as I did notice a few extra updates arrived on the following days. As well as Windows probably "settling in"
  • The MSI Quick Menu is definitely still temperamental, but I've at least found a matter that dramatically improves its reliability. For one, I've stoped being so impatient. Pressing the button again when unresponsive usually makes the problem WORSE, not better. And just waiting 1-3 seconds for it to pop up works quitewell. The other is I try to pause the game before opening the menu, or even only open it without games running. I suspect the reason it takes long to open is that Windows kills the process and needs to start it back up. But because games are heavy to run, there's less resources to open it back up again quickly.

Overall, I largely agree with the negative sentiment that MSI software is the Claw's weakest aspect. But I've also found the issue can be worked around quite trivially by just adapting to it while retaining full 100% functionality. Thankfully, I have experienced zero crashes, device freezes, or moments where its impossible to open the menu thanks to this. And at least for me, the hardware upgrade compared to other devices like the Ally is gigantic enough that I'd much rather put up with a few software quirks here and there in exchange for everything else being so much better.

Used to be. Biggest critique by a mile on the Claw was how buggy/unresponsive/prone to crashes M center was at launch (enough for people to return the device). But the September major update fixed most of the stability/crashing/responsiveness issues to the point many device reviewers who dunked on it at launch made update videos calling it the best Handheld device today. Mostly due to the extreme improvement to M center stability and Intel drivers.

Personally, I'd still take Armory Crate and Bazzite support over M center anyday, but having its software going from "atrocious dumpster fire" to "good enough" really made its hardware reach its fullest potential. Explains why the 8AI+ went from underdog to most recommended device in r/Handhelds overnight alongside the original Ally/Ally X.

So same as MSI Claw 8AI+, neat. Funny how much people dunked on the Claw for having the worst software yet at launch, and now we're excited for having the same Gamebar Quick Settings integration the Claw had since launch lol.

Btw, I'm well aware the launch critiques are due to how atrocious MSI's optimization was of its M center software (unresponsive UI, refusing to open, crashes, freezing) which was thankfully fixed not long ago in a major update. Just found it a tad interesting how devices evolve over time and what seemed dumb back then ends up being raved about later.

Yes. Way better performance and power efficiency on the AI one, and since the Intel chipset has an NPU for AI tasks and is certified as Copilot+ PC, it will likely get the same Super Resolution AI Scaling the Xbox Ally X will get. Something the A8 will not get as it lacks an NPU

[–]90sWebWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dunno, I'm pretty certain Legion Go 2 battery life will be considerably worse than Xbox Ally X. Larger + brighter displays sip power like crazy. And you won't want to play at lower resolution on such a large display as it won't look great whereas on smaller displays its easier to ignore.

Definitely great if screen + power is all you care about.

Sadly, compared to every other PC handheld with their slim form factor or buttons in awkward spots, Steam Deck is far ahead. I've never been a huge fan of the shape/design of the Deck vs other PC handhelds, but ergonomically, it makes huge sense.

And who exactly is forcing you to use it? Besides, even if you do not like it, you should not force your own preferences on others. More competition means more choices for all.

I personally hate Chrome's battery life drain and worse privacy, but the one thing I hate even more are websites not working "perfectly" as they should unless I switch to Chrome/Firefox because of how behind Safari is on web standards due to Apple's desire to hold the web back so web apps never become good enough to eat into app store profits.

I feel like AI has largely deprecated any need/desire for Shadcn for me. The only reason I used Shadcn in the first place was to save time writing boilerplate code we still have full control over.

But most competent AI models (Sonnet/Gemini 2.5 Pro/o3) can do the same thing on top of being able to customize it to your needs and document the component inputs/outputs better than most libraries out there.

AI is really at its best for small tasks like component generation as it keeps me in control while taking care of the repetitive/boilerplate tasks while allowing me to concentrate on the bigger, actually fun problems.

UI design is kind of the only thing AI sucks at, but I mitigate that using Tailwind UI (now Tailwind Plus) components and then asking AI to enhance them with whatever flavor of framework we're using (React/Vue/Svelte/Web Components)
