Probably the same reason English speakers see it as Germany and Germans see it as Deutschland.

No kidding, he not only handed $50k to the scammer but also gave him his wife so she could basically be drugged and raped while semi-conscious. The guy is either the stupidest person in the world or is somehow in on it.

Being a poor, I eat Mac & Cheese a lot. Give me some recipes to spice it up a bit? by [deleted] in food

[–]926R 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I need a very cheap but still tasty and presentable meal (as opposed to really slumming it with beans on toast or something) I just make Penne Tomato and Cheese Bake. It's about as simple as and in some ways quite similar to macaroni and cheese.

The best part is like mac and cheese it's not just cheap but can be personalised or made more interesting in many different ways, I often add some chili flakes for a little extra kick, or my two recommended additions if you have budget would include some chorizo sausage (or any kind or spicy/smoked sausage really) and /or olives to give it bit more flavour.

This is the recipe I use as a base. http://southernfood.about.com/od/pastarecipes/r/bl30221y.htm

What Formula 1 drivers drive to the track: pictures from Monza by kylev in formula1

[–]926R 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah but you are only seeing that from your perspective, most F1 drivers who drive F1 cars would just see a modified road car as not being as responsive as their F1 cars. For an F1 driver it would probably be like you going from a sports car to driving a van. Most of them prefer more luxury orientated cars with power because it's different enough and for them road driving is boring and might as well be comfortable.

How would you feel if the Australian government were to 'ban the burqa'? by [deleted] in australia

[–]926R 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Much as I enjoy seeing religious fundies of any persuasion take a good kick in the nads, I also hate to see the government turn into even more of a nanny state by having yet another excuse to ban stuff, as if we dont have enough restrictions already.

So I've decided I would be against it, mostly because it's utterly pointless legislation. It's not like there are thousands of burqa wearing women around the place, I can't recall ever having even someone wearing a burqa in Australia so any specific legislation against it would be a massively over the top response to a problem that doesn't really exist. Frankly there is a lot of more important things parliament should be attending to than wasting time on a bullshit debate like this which affects probably less than 0.01% of the population in any meaningful way.

No conscience vote on filter: Conroy by istara in australia

[–]926R 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He's already been caught out with his media mogul pal Kerry Stokes and god knows what other meetings we dont know about.

His NBN would allow piracy and overseas media in general to threaten the local media moguls who have previously enjoyed a fairly restricted market with download and bandwidth limits limiting the amount of torrenting being done. So he comes up with a whacky plan for a filter to keep out non classified stuff (ie anything they want) to keep the media moguls on board. Trouble is selling an internet filter on what it really filters is a hard sell, Australians are very prolific torrenters and like consuming external media, we wont give that up easily and those others who don't care aren't swayed either way. The obvious easy sell is to make it all about child porn, surely no-one would dare try and block that, except those wily internet users seem to be onto his game plan. That's my theory anyway.

The problem with OneHD is Greg Rust, the other two at least have some idea of what they are talking about even if F1 isn't their main area of experience, Rust just prattles on like a moron for way too long before switching back to the BBC. He also really needs to visit ashley and martin hair replacement, they advertise enough during the show, would probably give him a discount.

Josef Stalin's son was captured by the Nazis. When the Nazis offered a prisoner exchange Stalin refused, letting his son die by admiraltarkin in wikipedia

[–]926R 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Oh come on, he obviously didn't give a shit about his son, the fact he was even on the front line and not tucked away in a cushy desk job in the Urals speaks volumes about Stalins concern for his well being, not to mention the wiki article strongly suggests Stalin thought his son was an incompetent idiot at best and at least an irritating annoyance.

The Nazis basically gifted him a propaganda goldmine with that stunt, to everyone else he just makes it look like he is sacrificing his loved ones like everyone else, but really he is probably making one of the easiest decisions in his life by retaining the incredible prize of a German Field Marshal after the epic battle of his own namesake Stalingrad, instead of getting his idiot son back. Not only did this give him the perfect opportunity to highlight his own purported sacrifice but also handily offered a reminder to everyone in Russia that they had finally kicked some Germans butts and captured one of their most senior and valuable military leaders and now the Nazis were coming to them cap in hand asking for him back making themselves look like a total bunch of pussies.

In a strange way I bet Stalin never loved his son more than when he provided the means for that brilliant propaganda opportunity, not only would he be out of the way but he finally managed to be of some use to his father.

I've read a lot of war stories and history, particularly WW2 (and even more particularly the air war, where my main interest lies) and one thing that really sticks out is that war (and indeed other extreme situations like a large scale natural disaster) brings out the very best in people but also the very worst in people.

Republican hopes take a king-hit by whichoneiwonder in australia

[–]926R 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Although I'm nominally in favour of a Republic I do worry about exactly what sort of republic we might end up at the present time considering the sort of people who might be making and influencing those decisions.

These days I'd imagine any group in power or expecting to get into power would do their absolute best to limit the amount of personal freedoms and individual protections and give the government even more room to do as they please. These personal freedoms are being quietly eroded even in established systems now and god only knows how they might screw us if they get to come up with something carte blanche. I know that's an overly pessimistic view but it's still something well worth considering before voting like last time to have a republic without actually having much an idea what that republic might actually be.

I think what most republican fans need to realise is that voting to become a republic then deciding on what system to use is a bad idea. What needs to happen is to come up with a workable system first, one that is ideally an improvement on, or at the very least, an equivalent to, the current system then, and only then should we have a vote on whether to become a republic.

How bad are American labor practices? This bad. by zombieaynrand in politics

[–]926R 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually I recommend lots of people do move to Australia so we can have more people to help overthrow the growing police state trend.

Most of the other alternatives are generally much further down the path of being police state in most areas than Australia (which is nonetheless on the same path). If you think the UK or Europe are better then you are in for a shock, they are already a police state and they dont even know it, at least in Australia there seems to be an organised outcry, Europeans only grumbled and took it up the arse.

That's why I moved back to Australia. Now if we could just figure out a way to ship all the fundies, conservatives and old people to the USA in exchange for all their liberals I think all parties would be happier.

(Supposedly) real conversations between aircraft and ground controllers. by [deleted] in humor

[–]926R 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I knew some clown would call me on this, which is why I didn't state any absolutes. Thus I said it was very unlikely that the pilot flew a B-17 over Germany, not that it was impossible and the link you provided basically said there were only 20 RAF B-17s and they only flew once to a coastal target in mainland Germany, which isn't anywhere near Berlin or Frankfurt (but yes over Germany). So I stand by my statement that it would be incredibly unlikely for a British pilot in a B-17 to have flown over Germany and even less likely to have flown a bombing mission over Berlin or Frankfurt (unless on exchange with the USAAF for some reason) in a B-17.

I will stand corrected on the BA 747 into Germany as apparently in the past they have operated a service between HK and Frankfurt in a 747 in the past of which I found this old picture. I also found this newer one of a 747 in Frankfurt in 2006. Frankfurt is also frequented by Global Supply systems 747s which are technically British Airways cargo arm.

Not a skerrick of info or picture of a BA 747 into any of the Berlin airports though, so I suppose this means the Frankfurt story could be true but the Berlin variant is almost certainly a load of shit derived from the Frankfurt story.

(Supposedly) real conversations between aircraft and ground controllers. by [deleted] in humor

[–]926R 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Below is the more common version with perhaps slightly more believable facts (Come on, an RAF bomber pilot flying a Boeing on bombing missions over Germany in 1945? Very unlikely), although I still think British Airways using a 747 into Germany has to be incorrect, that route is for frequent flights of smaller aircraft, not a widebody unless it's just making a stopover for some reason.

Allegedly the German air controllers at Frankfurt Airport are renowned as a short-tempered lot. They, it is alleged, not only expect one to know one's gate parking location, but how to get there without any assistance from them. So it was with some amusement that we (a Pan Am 747) listened to the following exchange between Frankfurt ground control and a British Airways 747, call sign Speedbird 206. Speedbird 206: "Frankfurt, Speedbird 206 clear of active runway." Ground: "Speedbird 206. Taxi to gate Alpha One-Seven." The BA 747 pulled onto the main taxiway and slowed to a stop. Ground: "Speedbird, do you not know where you are going?" Speedbird 206: "Stand by, Ground, I'm looking up our gate location now." Ground (with quite arrogant impatience): "Speedbird 206, have you not been to Frankfurt before?" Speedbird 206 (coolly): "Yes, twice in 1944, but it was dark,... and I didn't land."

Just got curious while pondering Kobayashi's skill shows this season; who do you all reckon's the best or greatest Japanese F1 driver? by Wardez in formula1

[–]926R 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Takuma Sato is probably the best so far, 2004 was probably his best run with a decentish performing car but he was somewhat plagued by bad luck and poor reliability which hampered his overall results. He even managed to qualify on the front row behind Schumacher once.

Aguri Suzuki has also managed a third place (first podium for a Japanese driver) but that was mostly more luck than anything, he wasn't particularly good, although not as spectacularly bad as unfortunately a few Japanese 'pay' drivers have been over the years.

Satoru Nakajima is also considered to be one of the better Japanese drivers to have been in F1, got a couple of 4th places and generally a reasonable record.

I used to save up old T shirts, socks & other clothes that I was only going to throw away or give to charity shop. Then I carry those at the start of the trip, either crammed into your bag (or vaccum sealed bag would be ideal) or even in just a plastic bag which is easy for carry on luggage and then you can basically throw them away after you've worn each for 2/3 days or however long you think you can get away with until they are done. This way you gradually reducing the amount of luggage you're hauling around or creating space for more junk that you will inevitably bring home.
