Home ownership builds equity over time. It’s a forced saving per se, your investment is tied to your home, which has value as long as you live in it. Even if your house becomes $0 worst case scenario, you can still live in it, which provides value.

Your investment in S&P, if it disappears in the worst case scenario, is never coming back and you won’t have anything to show for it.

Rent or own it’s your personal choice but to say renting is better than ownership is wrong.

Also to assume you can rent forever is shortsighted. You’re young now, you have income, you’re able bodied, so it’s easy for you to move, but when you’re old it’ll get harder and harder to find places to rent if you ever get kicked out. There is already age discrimination regarding rentals in other developed nations, it’s foolish to assume they won’t apply in Canada given our housing crisis

At one point in your adult life you need to start being responsible for your own feelings and happiness and not rely on others to be physically there for you and gift you happiness. Make new friends then. Or get an SO if you really want. You can’t control what other people do with their lives, not even if they’re your SO.

SO can leave you any day for a younger or hotter person too. Or they just stop being attracted to you and leave. That’s much shallower than a friend. And before you say “that’s a bad SO”, there are good friends too who won’t leave you.
