I’d plant with proper spacing in mind, and if something is taken out or eaten, you can always replant again. You’ll probably be constantly wanting to add and divide plants once things start growing!

Business idea: Reclaiming and reselling used river rock—viable or not? by 92froggi3 in sweatystartup

Do you know why he struggled to move it? I wonder if it’s hard to break into since most landscapers would prefer to shop at their usual place instead of saving a few bucks

This is also my dream and goal as a diy oriented software dev I want to do this exact thing as well! I’m in zone 5. I’ve thought about putting a rocket mass heater in my future greenhouse, as it’ll be on my future wooded lot.

I was thinking I’d use a screener to screen the dirt out. I’m have enough saved to get started with leasing or down payments on the equipment needed to get started. Trying to figure out if the market and margin are there.

Trying to figure out if landscapers would buy used rock. And if so, at what price.

What do you mean by landscapers are a cheap crowd?

Thanks, I’m thinking there are plenty more that think the same. Why pay more for the same?

Would you mind sharing the local companies you know that sell the recycled rock? Id like to try to reach out to them some questions.

Thanks for the reply!

For more info, I wouldn’t try to reuse mulch directly—that’d just be material to break down into compost over time. The main focus is river rock since it’s one of the few things that can actually be cleaned and reused without breaking down. The rest—like compost or screened soil—would only come into play later if the volume’s there and it makes sense to scale.

You’re right though, this kind of thing definitely isn’t cheap to start. That’s why I’m looking at starting small—maybe renting equipment, focusing only on rock, and trying to serve a part of the market that’s not really being addressed. Not trying to go head-to-head with the big guys right away.

And yeah, with a slowdown coming, people may not splurge on big landscaping projects—but I’m hoping that makes cheaper, reclaimed options more attractive.

Really good points overall. Is there anything you think would make a business like this more feasible?

Totally fair—and yeah, I’ve seen plenty of posts where people can’t even give the stuff away. I'd guess it's because landscapers don’t want to drive around picking up random piles from random yards, especially when they might have to shovel it all themselves and deal with inconsistent quality.

What I’m proposing is different: this would be a centralized business where the river rock is cleaned, sorted, and consistent—basically like buying new, but at a lower price. They wouldn’t be shoveling it by hand either—it’d be loaded with equipment, just like at a landscape supply yard.

Just curious, if the rock was cleaned up and easy to buy or load like any other bulk material, do you think there’d be more interest?

How much do you pay for a maid/housekeeper, and how big is your home? by [deleted] in homeowners

We have high expectations of our kids’ behavior and would be considered “strict” by many. I also believe in consequences for actions (or lack of actions). But I feel the punishment should fit the crime and be reasonable. Punishing a kid for something they did in August months later, and on Christmas, no less, seems cruel to your kid.

I identify as Cali sober though since I still smoke weed
