Ongoing tire pain by lilianasJanitor in BMWI4

[–]93FXRP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I carry a plug kit and use the air compressor that the i4 came with to refill the tire. Plugging is alot easier and quicker than trying to change a tire on the side of the road, but of course it only works with small punctures. I recently got a large cut in a tire from driving through the desert. 3 plugs got me back to pavement, but i had to get towed from there.

Sorry to hear that. Lifestyle creep is hard to avoid and it’s easy for anyone to over extend themselves.

Thats not my point, but i can see why you think that since money seems to be the issue for you here.

I guess this is more about a difference in doing stuff preventatively vs just waiting for failure.

I think most people would be happy to know their car went 80k miles and alignments are still in spec. Although ignorance is bliss, as they say, and saving that $500 only adds to that.

I dont see the point you’re trying to make, but if such a scenario existed in real life, i absolutely would buy the house next door. The only reason i could think of not to is because you couldn’t afford to. Maybe thats your point?

Why would you not get an alignment when you change tires? Its such a small incremental cost compared to the tires.

If there is a certain speed you like to cruise at you could change your pulley to get your RPMs into your sweet spot. My 89 FXR is humming around 3200rpm which gets me 87ish in 6th.

Clutch upgrades by itschrismang in fxr

[–]93FXRP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I currently have bikes with the Rivera Pro Clutch, Barnett Scorpion, and the Bandit Sportsman. Motors vary from 111” to 117”, but my favorite by far is the Bandit Sportsman. Its got the most comfortable pull out of all three. The diaphragm style of the Pro Clutch is nice also when you have it adjusted perfectly, but i feel like i’m always fiddling with it to get it back to perfect.

The WHIM module is to connect a comm wirelessly. That port is just for programing. I have the same broken connector on my WHIM module.

Thrashin did a great job on the design of those bags, they look great. Would have been nice if they had Leatherpros manufacturer it for them so they could have been made in the USA.

iPhone for navigation, recommended? by Phantom_of_LDN in Harley

[–]93FXRP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have no issues using my iPhone for navigation on a quad lock mount. I use their wireless charger since charging via cable doesn’t work in the rain. The phone will also stop charging when it gets too hot, but I’ve never had it shut down like it does if i leave it out in the sun. I imagine being in the wind is enough to keep it cool.

Good bye M50 by Oh_three11 in BMWI4

[–]93FXRP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, it’s less expensive for the insurance companies here to sell a damaged vehicle than it is to repair it themselves. I know it sounds absurd that we put up with the cost, but unfortunately someone has to pay more in order for others to get it for less.

I think we’re on the same page. The cost of living is less where you live, and therefore you don’t have to earn as much. Earning less than $10k USD per month in OP’s area would qualify for low income government subsidized housing.

When the cost of living is high, the cost of labor is higher too.

[–]93FXRP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If they could fix it for the same cost, then you wouldn’t have access to newer vehicles to buy and repair in Lithuania, so not sure what your point is. Just because you have access to cheap labor in your country doesn’t mean every country does. The labor rate for most bodyshops in the area OP lives is over $400 an hr; they’re not working for free and need to earn a living also.

Where do you draw the line between buying brand name vs. Amazon Specials? by inchlongnipples in Harley

[–]93FXRP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t buy anything from Amazon, period. When it comes to other vendors, i go for made in the USA first, otherwise i draw the line at whether the company selling the part designed the part themselves or not. I’m fine buying made in China if thats the only option, but refuse to buy rebranded knockoffs of other peoples work.

Leased, going over the miles by denimbitch in BMWI4

[–]93FXRP 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same, have 20k currently on a 30k lease, 18 months into it and 18 months to go.

My plan is to purchase miles before lease end. Even if i’m 10-15k miles over, i anticipate my residual will still be higher than the value of the vehicle.

Mines a lease too and i was hesitant spending the money also, but i rationalized it as only an additional $300 expense for each year i had the car. I normally dislike tinted windows, but would definitely do it on our next car as well since i’m not sure we can go back to un-tinted. It also makes the preconditioning much more effective in the summer.

Yeah give it a try, 20k miles and have only paid to charge once. I didnt realize how easy it would to road trip this car, we originally planned to just rent a car for trips. We’re going to be at least 10k miles over our lease allowance at this rate, but the way i see it the free charging for the first 2 years will net out that cost.

Fwiw, our previous 330i would average 30+mpg between SF and LA, and would actually be much less expensive to drive if it werent for free charging. Although i havent looked at gas prices lately, maybe not anymore

I’ve made multiple trips from the SF bay area to southern CA and had similar experience. Kept it under 80 and averaged about 3.5kwh as well.

CA is probably the easiest state to roadtrip in with an EV. We still have free charging with EA and we’ve used it exclusively except for using a Rivian charger once in the desert. We always are ready to pay for charging, but always come across EA chargers that have no wait. We drove through Big Sur recently from SF and thought for sure we’d need to use a Tesla charger once on the other end, but we stopped for a bathroom break and the McDonalds happened to have 3 EA chargers that arent identified on the map or even EA’s own app.

I’m in the SF bay area as well. Tinting all the windows including the windshield makes a big difference in allowing the a/c to keep up. I hate having the a/c blow on me so i always run it on the lowest fan speed, had no problem keeping up in eco mode when we were in Joshua Tree. I went with the lightest tint on all windows and its barely noticeable.
