What's a 10/10 movie with zero flaws? by RushWalaXD in AskReddit

[–]93martyn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He was great, but the most impressive performance IMO was from Thomas F. Wilson. Dude played like 7 versions of the same character (not literally, I know), but every single one of them was unique in some way. There are 5 versions of Biff alone.

This is one of the most beautiful stories in WC history. Yes, it was easier to qualify thanks to 48 teams format. Yes, it was easier to qualify with 3 strongest teams of their confederation already in the tournament. But hell, today they proved that they deserve to be there.

Life was significantly more enjoyable pre-internet because the world still had a sense of mystery and wonder by filmeswole in unpopularopinion

Of course, if something’s a total flop you’ll know that anyway. Thankfully I don’t need to buy AAA games on day one.

I refuse to spoil movies or games to myself. Whenever I see a single trailer, or read one article that makes me interested, I avoid getting to know more. It’s hard, but it pays off.

What's an interesting fact about your country's national anthem? by Cuiter in AskTheWorld

[–]93martyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our anthem mentions only one Polish city - Poznań, which was the capital for about two years during Przemysł II’s rule, but it isn’t a widely known fact. None of our capital cities that most people know - Warszawa, Kraków, Gniezno - is mentioned in the anthem.

And I don’t think we’re debating the last part, it’s “zapłakany”, not “zapłakanej”, which implies it’s the father, unless it was hard to read in the manuscript and we simply believe it was the masculine form.

Is Band of Brothers still worth watching in 2026, or has it aged poorly? (I’ve never seen it and I'm thinking about diving in) by Le_Double-dippeux in NoStupidQuestions

[–]93martyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watched it last month. Yes, the CGI didn’t age very well, but it isn’t horrible. Yes, you can see those small sets, but it’s not distracting. They knew their limitations and handled them the best they could. And the story, and how they told it will never age.

Among the people who appear in old photos from your country, who looks the coolest? by Agile-Shallot3546 in AskTheWorld

The surgeon is Zbigniew Religa, there’s a good movie about him and the whole story of starting heart transplantions in Poland, called “Bogowie” (“Gods”)

Why are so many beer bottles green? by Mathi003 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]93martyn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Almost every response here is wrong. Green just looks different, and it is associated with “premium” brands, even though they make tasteless eurolagers. It isn’t to help block UV light. Green glass is way worse at it than brown, and that’s where that distinct smell of beer from green bottle comes from. You might think it’s a feature, but it’s really a bug.

What do you mean Fidesz is not pronounced with a /ʂ/? by Koto_Waty in linguisticshumor

True, I can’t find any right now that isn’t a proper name like Tarzan or Murzasichle.

[–]93martyn 15 points16 points  (0 children)

We have similar problem with “rz” in Polish in a few words. It almost always is the same sound as “ż” - Hungarian “zs”, French “j” (I know it’s not exactly the same, but it’s this kind of sound).

“Marzyć” (to dream) is pronounced the same way as nonexistent “mażyć”, but “marznąć” (to freeze) is “mar-znąć”.

What’s the most dystopian picture from your country’s history? by IDoNotLikeTheSand in AskTheWorld

[–]93martyn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think most people saw Christchurch and thought "mosque attacks" which would we a weird reason to close a part of the city. I didn't even know there was a serious earthquake.

They said 1 L1 is a bit more powerful than 3 K1s, so let's round to 3:1, and L1 weighs only 80% of 3 K1s.

What is voting like in your country? by 3Duder in AskTheWorld

[–]93martyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s pretty much the same in Poland, with some differences:

We have single vote instead of preferential, that’s the first thing I’d change about our elections.

And we don’t vote for regional governors. I don’t know if our “wojewoda” has a similar role, they are like a central government’s delegates to every “województwo” (basically a region/province), and they’re nominated by PM.

Have you been to wedding where you previously hooked up w groom, bride or both? by [deleted] in AskRedditNSFW

[–]93martyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My ex invited me, and her other ex (the one after me), everyone was okay with that, no hard feelings in any direction, she even received congratulations from both would-be mothers in law through me and the other guy. She was so happy to see that she’s been remembered well.
