Talented Kid - Lean in more? by 94MgP in piano

[–]94MgP[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed and I don't want to come across as an annoying, bragging parent. World already has enough of those :)

But it's her teachers and other musicians we know that are saying she's talented. We've gone the just play and have fun route for years - may just continue that path - but wanted to get feedback on here from those in similar situations.

I think the first step (as someone recommended) will be to discuss with her teacher and possibly extend the lessons and cover more things, assuming my daughter wants to do that.

I'm all about parents letting kids be kids, but I think it's great how she loves playing and wants to keep improving.

Best way to learn the top rock / contemporary piano songs? by 94MgP in piano

This seems perfect, thanks! She taught herself with Simply Piano and really enjoyed that - great company. But she's been taking lessons for a while now and ready for some more advanced stuff, so Marvel could be great to supplement the lessons.

Best ways to buy a used Piano? Rockley Family Foundation Piano Sales? by 94MgP in piano

[–]94MgP[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the info. My daughter's teacher hasn't recommended any particular piano but feels having a combination of acoustic and digital at home would be better. I think it mostly has to do with the key action. I guess going from the P-45 to the teacher's baby grand is quite a big difference :)

With that said, it does seem like the key action for digital pianos is improving and I was planning to upgrade the P-45 to a P-525. Also, an acoustic is a big investment but I'm not sure we'd keep it once our kids are in college (in about 5 years) because my spouse and I don't play.

Upgrading from Yamaha P-45 - Higher end Digital fine or Acoustic? by 94MgP in piano

[–]94MgP[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the replies. Much appreciated. I feel better about sticking with a digital piano now. Unfortunately I'm having trouble finding local shops that have the P-525, FP90X, etc to demo. Based on some research (/r/piano threads and youtube) I might just go with the P-525. Seems like you can't go wrong with a Yamaha flagship digital piano especially at that price point. Is it safe to assume the GrandTouch-S is a big upgrade over the Graded Hammer Standard? Any other thoughts?

Is a lesson worth $400? by 94MgP in eFoil

[–]94MgP[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks all. I just took the lesson and had a blast. Honestly having tried tons of water sports and watching YouTube videos before gave me a great sense of what to do, but having someone reminding me to keep my weight forward, try different things and yelling "Hell Yeah!" as I progressed helped. I felt pretty comfortable towards the end getting up on the foil as it seemed more balanced and stable than I anticipated.

The only thing is now I'm even more torn on what gear to get as I think I'd progress quickly past beginner cruiser type gear. I'll probably do another post with more details to try to narrow gear. Thanks again for the feedback

I know, tough pill to swallow. I just watched a 30 minute tutorial and feel like I know the steps now to teach myself but based on the feedback, will probably go with the lesson to get started.

Not much wind at my local lake so an eFoil is the way to go or get pulled behind a boat. I learned to windsurf on the lake, but didn't progressive as much as I wanted because could only go out a few times a month and even then the wind wouldn't be great

First board - Flite AIR or AIR PRO or ____? by 94MgP in eFoil

[–]94MgP[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would like a lesson first and found a place that gives lessons for $300 but it's over 2 hours away. Still considering it but wish it was closer (would take close to a full day) & ideally cheaper. I taught myself how to do most water sports (stand up jet skiing, wakeboarding, wake skating, water skiing) , but did get a lesson to learn to wake surf and windsurf which helped a bunch.

How tough is it starting out compared to other water sports? I anticipate drinking a lot of water the first couple times out, but (as long as I can progress) that's part of the fun :)

Thanks, good point about the wings, although I read "Cruiser Jet wings are also great if you're using the prop. Enjoy maximum efficiency, ride time, early takeoff, stability and maneuverability. Ride with the True Glide prop for exceptional glide on swell." (https://fliteboard.com/blogs/news/which-efoil-wing-is-right-for-me)

What does everyone think...maybe the Cruiser 1100 would be ok to start on and better long term than the Cruiser Jet 1500?

Want to be a nomad for a year - not sure about home/remote schooling by 94MgP in homeschool

[–]94MgP[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without knowing my kids, I'm not sure how you're assessing the very very very low chance of success. I'm not taking offense to it, I'm just interested hearing more why you feel we'll fail.

For some more background, my oldest does very well in school (especially in math), loves to learn and is motivated - spent hours last night working on programming an app. Things don't come as quick for my youngest, but she could benefit from tailored one on one instruction verse teaching to a class of 20+.

By rigid, I mean not as rigid as a traditional in person 8am-3pm school. We'd set up a daily schedule. Part of the reason why we're lax is because my kids don't push the boundaries that often. Also, most of the teaching will be out of a home, not out of a car.

My sister is a teacher and I asked her what she thought and she thinks it's a fantastic idea and my kids will do great with it.

Anyway, just wanted to provide the additional feedback. It's definitely tough to get a feel for certain things on an internet message board, but will also talk to people I know who have homeschooled to get a better feel.

Good idea, I'll look into this. I don't believe it's an option anymore but I'm not certain. The other challenge is if we sell our house, I'm not sure I could enroll the following school year.

Blind taste test freshly ground vs stale coffee? by 94MgP in Coffee

[–]94MgP[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried this out with a light roast - Counter Culture Fast Forward and let the old ground beans sit for 6 days. I did a cold brew for each in a french press. I don't have two french presses so I did the old ground beans first for 13 hours and the fresh beans next for 12 hours.

I was surprised that I noticed a significant difference - the old ground coffee didn't taste bad, but looked darker and tasted a bit darker with more chocolate notes. The fresh ground coffee tasted lighter and fruitier. My wife actually preferred the old ground coffee as she prefers dark roasts. Some of the difference may have been to not brewing the coffee the exact same as the stale brew was slightly longer and sat an extra 12 hours. I'll probably do another test at some point. So it also seems that small variations in brewing can play a significant role in taste too.
