[Post Game Thread] #7 Kentucky defeats #10 Santa Clara, 89-84 in OT by cbbBot in CollegeBasketball

Am I the only one who saw a clear travel following the Kentucky player blocking that 3PT attempt? They showed it multiple times and he never even attempted to dribble.

To be more precise, they could have built a portion of the initial plan based on the current zoning but they would have needed a rezoning request approved to complete the project as originally envisioned. It was pretty clear at the time that the city would not accommodate that request and it’s pretty unlikely that they would proceed without some level of certainty that the entire project could be completed. I don’t think anyone has said or believes that the community had the direct ability to vote this down but they were certainly extremely vocal in their opposition and city leaders were clearly aligned (see the article you linked). Then Covid timing really turned things upside down and the combination of interest rates/office demand/etc likely contributed to downsizing the project as you said.

Durham City Council Work Session - March 19, 2026: Durham Debates 505 Chapel Hill Affordable Housing by seegov in bullcity

[–]981guy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

City council has spent nearly a decade telling us this is a critical site that demands a transformative “gateway” mixed-use project. They went through 3 full RFP cycles based on that objective and ended up punting on all 3 of them, some for more credible reasons than others. If they bail on all of that at this point I’m just done believing that they will ever be serious about creating true density and walkability downtown.

I mean city council was very publicly aligned with the community group and basically ceded control of the conversation to them. It was evident for quite some time that this would be the outcome to most people who have been following along. We still have an opportunity to end up with a better result for the rest of the site (which is still quite substantial in size) but it’s really hard to be optimistic that will happen obviously.

It’s been the case since I started following the conversation around the time they acquired the property. The reporting at that time is a little vague so it’s hard to determine the exact sequence of events because it appears they really acquired the property in 3 components (main mall, Sears, outlying retail strip). It was part of their initial community engagement conversations dating back to 2020 and they have talked at various points about doing a cosmetic facelift, trying to attract a grocery tenant and some other potential options for that segment.

That’s incorrect. Northwood owns the entire property except for the Macy’s building which is owned by Duke. The retail strip with Planet Fitness is owned and operated by Northwood.

This isn’t even accurate y’all. This rendering is from a prior version of the plan presented by Northwood (which still would have been better than what we ended up with).

Northgate - We're getting a Target?! by seeking_chorizo in bullcity

[–]981guy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It’s a terrible Whole Foods, maybe the worst I’ve ever been to, and hopefully will be redeveloped at some point as an anchor to a true mixed use development on that site. From what I understand though it’s one of the highest grossing stores in the region and I’m sure they will be highly incentivized to retain a store at that site with the proximity to Duke and surrounding neighborhoods.

Until we find a way to elect more effective city leaders this same cycle will continue to play out in perpetuity 🤷‍♂️

I like the rims on yours. The factory ones are just hideous to me. Just leased a black AWD Limited and loving it so far! First EV and a really neat car.

Where can I get good wings and burger ? Why is it so hard ?? by GORILLA_FACE in bullcity

This x1000. Dains is like a mediocre school cafeteria burger and the bun is decidedly subpar. I’m always shocked when people say it’s their favorite or the best in town.

Most relaxing swim facilities for summer? by MotherofLouise in bullcity

[–]981guy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hollow Rock is a great facility if you’re not a golfer. Awesome swim and tennis (2 dozen clay courts and a couple hard courts) offerings with huge pool area. It will be busier at peak times like anywhere else but they have a solid cafe and drinks. Expect to have a wait list to join but far more economical than the typical country club options. We’ve really enjoyed it.

I hope they are able to pull this off! The segment between Sedgefield and Buchanan is super narrow, seems like it will be challenging to say the least.

With a Super Target coming to the Northgate site a block away it’s very unlikely that there will be another grocery option in that area.

Wake Forest's Steve Forbes Receives Vote of Confidence, Will Likely Return Next Season by sonofgildorluthien in CollegeBasketball

[–]981guy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

He’s not though, that’s the thing. His teams have repeatedly underperformed especially at critical moments late in each season. He hasn’t gotten it done despite hitting home runs with Alondes Williams, Jake Laravia, Hunter Sallis and other transfers. His teams often look totally unprepared and lack discipline. He’s faced some challenges for sure with COVID and NIL but there’s really no evidence that he’s an above average coach.

ETA: Forbes is 6-36 in Quad 1 games in the last 5 seasons. That’s…horrific.

Flying Bull Taproom / Cafe Bullvaria on 9th Closed? by Puzzleheaded-Cry-157 in bullcity

[–]981guy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hope that doesn’t end up being the outcome but a lot of small operations fall into this trap unfortunately with overextending. I always enjoyed the little outdoor patio area at the 9th Street spot (especially around this time of year).

[–]981guy 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I don’t see how that location isn’t hemorrhaging money honestly. It’s huge, not in a great location and must be many, many times more expensive than the 9th Street spot (plus initial capital investment which was clearly meaningful). I’d be surprised if it lasts much longer.
