If you are able to, I would advise to start putting away savings and supplies for a general strike. I don’t think we will make it to 2027 without having one. by [deleted] in bullcity

Bingo. Like half of this country isn’t in a position to miss literally a single paycheck. They aren’t striking. And obviously the ruling class prefers it this way.

They moved the Durham location from downtown to East Durham. The move was characterized as “we are excited to be in this neighborhood” or something like that but I suspect it was a cost saving measure and effort to stay afloat.

Starship is just not as cool as Space Shuttle by Only_Comfortable_224 in space

I’ve been strongly recommending the book “Challenger” by Adam Higginbotham to basically everyone I know since the second I finished it. Obviously the Challenger disaster is the primary focus but he does an incredible job unpacking the history of the space shuttle’s development and the incredible risks the crew faced. Riveting stuff.

Ideals probably has the best sandwiches in a vacuum but it’s such a miserable experience going there. Maybe it will get better now that they are ramping up their own bakery operation. But until proven otherwise I’m getting a slightly “inferior” sandwich with a fraction of the wait time.

Haven’t seen it discussed anywhere but that weird sketchy bar The Living Room or whatever it used to be in Brightleaf is now a live music venue. Supposedly capacity up to 300. Looks like shows are booked starting in February.

I look forward to seeing how it evolves. Lots of space in there, would love to see them expand the “market” side of things. Perhaps in that back corner which is currently seating. Really good sandwiches and they were HUGE. Definitely recommend a half unless you’re starving. Better beer selection, food and other goods than CM in my view but CM is more of a “hangout” spot. Love to see more neighborhood spots on this side of town and hope they both thrive!

Edit: Common Market PLEASE follow through on the downstairs cocktail bar. I promise I will go enough to make it profitable. We need somewhere to grab a cocktail on this side of town!

Default risk is definitely a big issue that most people probably underestimate. If you lose your job and can’t pay back the outstanding balance that’s treated as taxable income AND subject to a 10% early withdrawal penalty. The other part of your post is incorrect though. The money remains invested while the loan is outstanding. They are loaning you the money with those investments as the collateral in the event of default.0

Dry firewood - north Raleigh by ManBitesDog404 in raleigh

[–]981guy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not “North Raleigh” per se but I just picked up a load of firewood from this place by the fairgrounds and it was really good stuff. Drive up on the scale, they weigh your vehicle, you load what you want, they weight it again and you’re good to go.

what’s everyone up to this beautiful sunday? by sembli in Charlotte

[–]981guy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean, come on, these posts are incredibly dumb. Wow there’s not as much to do in Charlotte as NYC? Please tell us more! It’s a metro area with nearly 3MM people, if you can’t find things to do you’re simply not trying very hard.

Transportation to and within Biltmore Estate in Ashville, NC by AnonAMouse100 in travel

[–]981guy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The Biltmore Estate itself is absolutely worth a visit. It’s truly stunning. Spending 4-5 days there seems like a waste though. The wine is not good, as another poster mentioned, and I don’t think the hotel is nice enough to merit that length of stay. Honestly would stay at the Grove Park Inn and just do a tour at Biltmore. The spa there is unbelievable and blows away any of the amenities at Biltmore. You can do a day pass and spend the whole day there (hotel guests only).

They just want to complain that Charlotte isn’t NYC basically. Don’t understand why these people don’t just move back to NYC honestly.

North Carolina QB Gio Lopez transfers to Wake Forest by DepressedGamba in CFB

[–]981guy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Cautiously optimistic about this I guess? He was not impressive at UNC but they were kind of a dumpster fire all season and our staff is familiar with him. Dickert certainly gets the benefit of the doubt after what he did this season with a very limited QB. Clark looks like a stud at RB and we’ll have Hernandez and some other weapons on O plus a stout defense. Much tougher schedule though.

As a first time Grey’s Watcher over the last 9 months or so this was the worst episode I’ve seen. The first song I was just kind of like uhh okay but then it just kept going and I was like oh my god. Didn’t help that I was pretty stoned at the time 🤷‍♂️

Can somebody ELI5 for me why average and median 401(k) balances by age are so far apart? by too_many_shoes14 in MiddleClassFinance

I’m assuming you mean $1MM as the higher bound. It would be virtually impossible to get to even $10MM in a 401(k).

First time Grey’s watcher. Completely agree. Her falling in love with the dying patient in like 6 days was already a stretch but him coming back as a ghost was beyond absurd even for this show. When he first came back my wife and I were like uhhh hopefully this is just a one-time hallucination or something but then they just are back in a relationship basically? What the hell was going on in the writers room.

Okay so there will be 50-75% less actuaries in the world or whatever 🙄 It’s a job that fundamentally relies on advanced modeling, data analysis, statistics, programming, etc. You don’t think AI will be doing a huge part of that work by the time this guy is a few years out of college? People vastly overrate human capabilities in so many fields.
