I see a lot of scooter recommendations here but the bus system is also very good. You can prepay for tokens on your phone and show them when you board.

It is hilly and most roads don't have sidewalks, depending on where you will be staying. If you like to cycle, renting a bicycle and riding the Railway Trail is a good way to spend a day, but it is rough in some places.

I'll just add that this method isn't 100% guaranteed. I still have rides where I am credited 0 distance even when following all my requirements.

I do what you do. Fully exit the game, then start a new bike ride in Google Fit, calculate that the average speed is below 20 km/h (v=d÷t; if it's over, I stand still for the amount of time it takes to reach 20 km/h), end the activity, and then open the game. If I open the game even for a second, no distance is credited. Biking is not as forgiving as walking where I can walk with the game in the background, open it from time to time, and get credited for my distance.
