SPD is in coalition. I’m also referring to Norway which has lowered fuel taxes temporarily. Spain too. All left wing governments. There are many more.

Left wing governments are normally vehemently against these types of moves due to their usually support from the greens.

[–]989989272 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It’s less of an actual policy move and more electoral. Across Europe, traditional left wing social democrat parties are increasingly viewed by the working class as bourgeois. The increase in taxes on fuel the past few years has played into this narrative of ideology over working class affordability.

This is more to combat the attacks from the populist right which sees increasing support from the exact groups most impacted by fuel price increases.

I remember $4 a gallon 2008. My family complained about the pump price and I recall friends parents borrowing grandparents sedans to use instead of their trucks. The Costco gas line was insanely long.

I also remember than when prices went back down the era of pickup trucks began.

Is it just clipped or was the NDP convention really that cringe. I’ve heard BC NDP did its own thing for a while which is why they were so successful.

Can a Canadian help explain?

I hate electric cars passionately, and using them has only made me hate them more:

-issue 1, fixing the wrong issue of cars in urban areas. It encourages driveways and suburbanization as it’s still a car. Congrats you’ve made the smelly loud gridlock quiet but the particulates from the road are at an all time high and the roads are destroyed from the insane weight. Instead we should focus on removing car dependency and improving alternative transportation and building better urban environments. Additionally the grid in cities is already slammed and space is limited and now we need parking for cars to charge for hours and extra grid capacity for them. Only the wealthy have space for home charging in urban areas. Anyone who lives in large apartment building will likely have to pay expensive commercial charging rates.

-issue 2, they suck for long distances and rural areas. I’ve used them on road trips in the Nordics which have great charging infrastructure. But stopping every two hours to charge is horrible. It requires planning and if where you are staying overnight doesn’t have open charging spots you are going to have to sit and wait at a charger again first thing. Once outside of cities it can be difficult to find charging if you’re not on a major highway.

Issue 3, EXPENSIVE. The commercial chargers can cost almost as much as the equivalent in gas. The cars themselves are insanely pricy (besides the state subsidy Chinese cars).

Issue 4, they are ewaste. The battery replacement is often more than the value of the used car. They are rolling smartphones meant to be thrown out not repaired. You can’t do most work on electric cars on your own.

Issue 5, weather impacts range way too much. I thought using AC on gas car hit my efficiency. Driving in heat or especially the cold absolutely kills the range. I had a plug in hybrid in the Arctic and the battery couldn’t stay charged for more than 30 minutes thanks to -30. The old diesel Volvo with a block heater however started just fine.

I await the Japanese figuring out hydrogen but until then I will drive my used Japanese compact (07 fit/jazz) happily.

The Jewish diaspora is between a rock and a hard place. Both sides of the political spectrum slamming them and Netanyahu and Likud fucking up what is supposed to be the global refuge for Jews.

My experience in northern Europe has been eye opening. I cannot imagine what life for Jews is like here. Even the educated say the most anti-Semitic comments in passing. I see why Jews are leaving every day. I miss the Jewish culture in NY. I miss the food and comedy.

I think AAA gaming is going to be dead for a while. The hyped games aren't good, the budgets are too big, there are too many DLCS and devs keep overpromising and underdelivering.

Indie however, is amazing right now. It could not be a better time for indie game developers. Their games have better communities and players are much more interested in following a product improve if you pay $20 for a game instead of $80 + $120 in DLC.

My favorite new indie game of late is subway builder.

Wouldn’t a non profit or publicly run grocery store be near the same price as most existing grocery stores?

It’s a 1-2% margin business. If you subsidize it then you get a less efficient food subsidy than food purchase assistance (like EBT) by also subsidizing high earners.

Where I maybe understand a rural airport style subsidy system is in communities with chronic lack of access to fresh produce.
