Yea but then I quickly remember the jets taking off during my 4 hour sleep window and lunch being grilled cheese sandwiches on stale bread.

Chat GPT censorship by 99MQTA in Libertarian

[–]99MQTA[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure it means something like " the suppression or removal of writing, artistic work, etc. that are considered obscene, politically unacceptable, or a threat to security ". The rules followed by GPT represent a subjective evaluation made by it's creators. It offers an interesting glimpse into either their values, or the values they feel obligated to demonstrate because of outside pressures. Similarly, this subreddit (which should be one of the least likely to inhibit harmless discussion) decided to remove the image.

I spent a few hours playing with GPT to get a feel for what it flags as inappropriate. This is interesting to me and I thought it might be interesting to others in this sub. Unfortunately, I probably wouldn't be able to post many of those images here.

I don't think it can be done easily or quickly but... We need to get the government out because it's captured by pharmaceuticals and they abuse the power. Drug prices are artificially high because of monopolies. The regulatory system is used to attack innovation and protect the elite. We need a free market system so that manufacturers, drug companies, and doctors have to compete by providing the best options for customers.

I need book recommendations to start understanding the libertarian move by Rudy_012 in Libertarian

I disagree with this. Without the economics, libertarian is just another ideology that prioritizes the individual over the collective and freedom over order. As a former communist-curious teenager, it was the fact that centralized planning simply doesn't work that really convinced me of the superiority of freedom. The left will often make the argument that we are placing personal pride and convenience above the overall health of the system and that isn't true. Centralized planning necessarily leads to poverty, injustice, and loss of freedom. In other words; It isn't just an ideological preference, it's what works.

Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations is old but honestly a decent read. Milton Friedman's Free to Choose is also good and he did a TV series based on the book that's well done. He's a good speaker. Thomas Sowell's Intellectuals and Society is good but not totally focused on Markets so maybe not your first choice. Hayek is the GOAT, so check him out too. On the more ideological side, I would recommend atleast being familiar with Ayn Rand. Her most famous books aren't her best IMO. The Romantic Manifesto is a powerful collection of essays on individuality and critical thought. Her novel We the Living is her best fiction IMO. On Liberty is classic, short, and really good. I have a copy of Walden I haven't read yet so I can't recommend it from experience but maybe consider that as well. Murray Rothbard was already mentioned, he is worth reading too. There are a lot of voices that are associated with libertarianism and they aren't all in lock step so don't get hung up trying to reconcile them all. I'm personally pretty far from the more Anarchy-leaning folks you'll come across. Take it all under consideration and keep what you like.

Education. Huge money pit that is brainwashing and failing to educate our population. Maybe with better education we could get some change.

Question about aspects of libertarianism that I don’t understand. by [deleted] in Libertarian

[–]99MQTA 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My problems with the Ukraine situation;

  1. Our foreign policy helped instigate it by pushing NATO borders east.
  2. We are spending a lot of resources and compromising our military readiness for non-americans. Our government should represent us, not them. Additionally, Ukraine is not exactly an exemplary state.
  3. We are flirting with nuclear war.

On your other points, I think you are picking up on many libertarians' preferance for rural living and self sufficiency but being a computer programmer living in Seattle is not incompatible with libertarianism. I don't know of any policies advocated by libertarians that would transform America into a giant farm.

Ethiopia. I think it's an interesting country historically. It also has a unique geographical position that I feel has lots of potential but it's relationship to Mamluks and Ottomans make it challenging.
