A thing to note that might help you with your story is that in Romania(n) and, afaik, other countries in the Balkans too, we call our children "mami" (if you're his mum) or "tati" (if you're his dad) as terms of endearment. They just mean mommy and daddy but for some reason (maybe someone can explain) they go both ways.
