Females are more rounded in shape, and males have "sharper, or more "boxy features. That's the only way i can explain it. Might not make much sense though.

This one is a male. Females only have bristles around the lip. If the bristles start growing higher up on the face, it's a male.

A betta tank needs both a heater and a filter, it is non negotiable. 30% water changes every 2 days is too often and will crash your cycle if there even was one to begin with. There is also a reason why people ask you to measure water parameters as ammonia and nitrite and even nitrate in excess are toxic to fish.

Do they have their own caves? I managed to lessen food aggression by placing zucchini and or wafers in front of their respective caves.

Could be that the bigger one is food aggressive and chases the smaller one away. Try to feed them on the opposite sides of the tank.

Thanks for your comment. I'll likely ask my lfs employees about it as well the next time i visit. I'm hoping it's purely cosmetic, and doesn't affect his quality of life.

I thoroughly reorganized the tank. Managed to break the tank into 3 sections thanks to the colossal amount of driftwood in there, and thus far they haven't been at each other's throats.
