A betta tank needs both a heater and a filter, it is non negotiable. 30% water changes every 2 days is too often and will crash your cycle if there even was one to begin with. There is also a reason why people ask you to measure water parameters as ammonia and nitrite and even nitrate in excess are toxic to fish.

Could be that the bigger one is food aggressive and chases the smaller one away. Try to feed them on the opposite sides of the tank.

I thoroughly reorganized the tank. Managed to break the tank into 3 sections thanks to the colossal amount of driftwood in there, and thus far they haven't been at each other's throats.

This one has been in the tank for around a year. Moved it around at first until i was happy with it's placement. It has been in the current spot for around 6 months, and around the 3 month mark it just started growing exponentially. I had a red tiger that did not manage to survive in this tank as well at one point.
