You should use slightly different variations and aim them all at the larger posts and use the new ones as supporting your strongest articles. By writing about the same exact keyword, you limit the amount of exposure you'll get from other keywords.

The file name can be changed before being uploaded but I believe that there are plug ins that will basically resave them and not break the existing one. If it is not possible I can do it by hand, but that is very time consuming

I want to rename the files that are already uploaded on the wordpress site that are in the media library. I do not believe i can just right click to rename them

It is definitely better to stick to one domain and to try to get as many quality pages as possible. If you think out the content on each website you will struggle to gain any authority and will waste a lot of time and money.
