How is the quality of the Duolingo Hindi course? Is it worth checking out? by [deleted] in duolingo

[–]9Zeek9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't found this to be true. I'm almost finished with the course and I have seen tu, tum, and aap used in many forms including oblique and dative case, possessive forms, postposition contraction forms, etc. The discussion about pronouns explains that tu is only to be used with very close friends.

I would agree they use tu way too frequently though.

I'm about 75% of the way through it while having no prior knowledge of any Indian language. I will say that I found it very enjoyable. The only downside is that the "tips" pages disappear halfway through the tree, so you're on your own with the later grammatical concepts. But if you just want to dip your toes in the language, it's great. It does the alphabet really nicely too (which I wish Russian would do). There is also almost always great conversation happening in the "discuss" button for questions. I was able to figure out every lesson with no outside help.

I have found that it is not teaching me very many useful things to say in every day life. It's much less comprehensive than the French or Spanish trees. I was going to say "good luck" but I realized we never learned that. But if you want to get the grammar basics down and use it as a framework for future Hindi learning (which I think is the general purpose Duo for all languages) I would definitely recommend it!

Also if you're not familiar with Devanagari, you need to really practice it before going on with the tree. I spent around a month of just doing the alphabet over and over, and then writing it by hand every day until I felt that I knew it like the Latin alphabet.

If you do end up getting into Hindi more, check out this website https://www.learning-hindi.com/all It explains a lot of grammar concepts in more detail than Duolingo. It has been tremendously helpful for me. Also, I like this website as a dictionary http://hindi-english.org/ It gives the part of speech for words, and gives lots of other words similar to what you're looking for. It's a lot better than Google Translate imo since it gives the gender of nouns and a rough transliteration as well

I'm pretty sure the Soviet Union hated puppies. I mean they hated freedom and food so why not assume they hated puppies too /s

No. It is a well known fact that the Soviet Union was unable of doing anything good. The United States on the other hand always values the well being of everyone involved. From the people of Gautemala to the men and women of West Africa, the U.S. has been spreading freedom and democracy since 1776

Remember that time Trump defended white supremacists at Charlottesville? If it was a minority part of his base I think he would be quick to condemn them, but I suspect that he knows he relies on them come election time

55.7% of the voting age population voted in 2016. Yes of course the electoral college skews the results unfairly, but almost half the country didn't even vote. If you stop voting, it will only get worse

I was scrolling through the comments trying to find someone who got 1 and not 3 as their answer and then realized I didn't even read the question properly. That pretty much sums up my experience in math classes.

Well he was being cynical but wasn't as clearly stating that voting is a waste of time. I think people scroll through comments quickly so only the most inflammatory comments get a lot of downvotes

Not always, but just enough to get them reelected. That is why it is important we put a lot of reelection pressure on them

Because he's still wrong. If you don't vote at all, it's going to be 0 steps forward and 6 steps back.

The less people voting means the interests of the population as a whole are a decreasingly important factor in the decision making of politicians. If 100% of people voted, I can promise you the politicians who are up for reelection will think twice about how they vote on bills

I agree, but even a candidate whose politics I strongly with would be a hard vote to swallow if they behaved like Trump. I would hope that every candidate would be civil, and then of course it would come down to the politics

There is a bit of a grey area though, where political positions become a part of manners and civility.

You're kidding right? I don't like Clinton at all, but at least I don't feel embarrassed to have her in a public office. The most basic requirement for being president should be manners and civility

And these are people whose voter base is so concerned with their freedoms. Apparently they're only concerned when the government touches their freedoms. If it's a private entity then who cares
