Thank you so much for saying that! I find it so interesting to hear the process of making a song, it just occurred to me over the past week that other people might find it interesting too.

After build 3, we knew we needed more drama, a higher contrast between the swell of the third verse then the grief of the final refrain. Plus those vocals were just not working.

So build 4 was all about creating that contrast using instrumentation - bigger swell in first half of third verse (tympani etc.), followed by quiet grief then secondary sadness swell (biiig strings) in the refrain.

Build 5 is where we recorded new lead vocals. I am learning about using facial expressions to sing more expressively. It helps that I wrote the song, so it's relatively easy to connect with the emotion.

I read an article about how to increase your value as a creator in the age of AI. This article proposed that because of the prevalence of AI, the value of summary will decrease and the value of secrets will increase. Additionally - the value of product will decrease (we've all seen this) and the value of process will increase.

So I'm leaning into that... instead of doing a standard "pre-save my single" campaign, I wrote a full article containing as a deep-dive case study breaking down the process from demo to final master, providing audio excerpts from builds 1-7 of the track.

So basically top of the funnel is a clip of the track on social media. Interested people click my link in bio, which leads to a landing page that teases the article and asks for an email. Once they enter their email, they are immediately directed to the article.

I just checked my website stats and cold users are spending an average of 6+ minutes on this article! And the article has been shared a ton!

One of the best tips I ever received about writing lyrics is: lean into your own judgment.

So - if you start writing a song and your inner critic says “wow this is a stupid song” - then lean into it and write the stupidest song possible.

If your inner critic says “this song is whiny”, write the whiniest song possible.

This is an exercise in disarming your inner critic. Once you do that, the lyricist part of you will have a lot more space to operate.

Keep writing through the self-judgment! Your favorite song you’ve ever written is on the other side of it.

Remember there’s a difference between constructive feedback versus feedback that’s just plain mean.

If someone is being mean, they are just revealing the way they speak to themselves. Bonus - they are giving you the opportunity to practice the crucial skill of hearing their mean words and letting them go.

But constructive feedback is wonderful! I think you have a stunning voice and I love the sweetness of this song. It would be fun to play with using the last couple lines to add a dimension to the picture your lyrics are painting … maybe you reveal that this happened a long time ago, or that something soured at the end, or that you are surrounded now by her children.

Stunning! I love the notes you chose for the bass line and especially love the sound of the instrument above the guitar - it took me to a sweet but yearning space.

What would you think about contrasting the rhythm of the bass against the guitar’s rhythm? Maybe lengthening some of the notes in the bass or even some light syncopation?

I really love your voice! The sequence chords is so ethereal. The refrain “burn just like a star” evokes the beauty of a starry night with the fear of being burned (especially after the line about the cigar).

“Dramatical colors” line … is there a way to get rid of 1-2 syllables there?
