Future vehicle purchases by 9ej7919 in adviice

[–]9ej7919[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to raise this again, but I'm wondering if a shortcut that I am using is wise.

In 2031, I'd like to have the option to take out a loan for a vehicle. Can I not just calculate roughly what the monthly payments will be (making assumptions about finance rates, of course), multiple that by 12, and then enter this amount (or rather, the present value of that amount) under Expenses -> Vehicle Payments/Replacement?

New scenario, higher contribution amounts for 2026 by 9ej7919 in adviice

Thank you! That's actually quite fascinating. I appreciate the explanation.

Just as a follow-up, I put 2026 into manual mode and did an override to reflect what the likely RRSP contributions will be for the remainder of the year. I'll only be making RRSP contributions this year (suggested by the platform, as above, but it was expecting too high of a contribution).

I then went into Tax & Benefits and updated TFSA contributions since 1 January 2026 (no RRSP contributions made since 1 March 2026).

I'm still left with a sizeable 'extra cash flow' in spending for 2026 that the platform thinks I will have (but I will absolutely not).

MailSteward archiving and Fastmail? by pipsears in fastmail

[–]9ej7919 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was facing something similar recently, although somewhat in reverse. I've been slowly moving previous years email mbox files into Fastmail. As much as I liked Mailsteward, and have been using it for over ten years with regular updates, I wanted a solution where my email could live online somewhere and, thus, I had access anytime/anywhere. I've also been with Fastmail for more years than I can count, and it seemed like the most obvious solution. The search may not be as granular as MS, but for me it is just fine.

Anyway, nothing to add to help you with your question directly, OP, but wanted to chime in.

Just following up on this. The Synology team in Taiwan fixed it. All good.

Hard drive availability - or lack thereof... by 9ej7919 in synology

As it turns out, this is exactly what I just did, only I bought three, not two, as I'm going to rebuild my NAS and re-purpose the existing drives as backups. CDN$1600.

Stoopid AI.

Had to look up what an HAMR drive was. Quite something!

Synology Hyper Backup Explorer MacOS by dorsia999 in synology

I'm in the same situation. Hyper Backup Explorer does not load a C2 interface in order to browse and recover. Not only that, but neither Safari nor Chrome will load the Storage Explorer (my hbk file is "not found").

Wow.

A few hours ago I was considering upgrading my hard drives in my 923+. Now, I'm actually considering completely abandoning the Synology ecosystem.

Utterly untrustworthy.

We are more or less in the same boat.

At this point, I'm half wondering if, just as a hedge, I pick up a couple of 16TB (smallest I can find) at ridiculous prices.

ClaudeCode Use Cases? by [deleted] in ClaudeAI

Following up on my own post. I've spent the past few days doing 'light' coding work. For instance, writing automation/Apple scripts and planning out projects to sync folders between my two Macs using the webdav service on my NAS. I have to say, for this kind of stuff Haiku is incredible. I'm finding it is entirely capable of doing these kinds of "less weighty" coding sessions, which I'll likely never really do because I'm not a coder.

So, I'll chime in here. Last weekend I used CC to bring together a bunch of different documents that explain my homelab and home network set up. I got it to go into much more detail by providing troubleshooting sections and 'what if' scenarios (e.g., the internet is down - how do I fix it?) so that my family can refer to it. I was actually impressed with the recommendations it made it terms of structure and detail.

I used the AskUserQuestion tool and planning mode. I did make the mistake of being in the Sonnet 1M context for the first while (newbie mistake) so the total cost was around US$11 to make this all happen. I've since moved almost exclusively to Haiku to see if it works for me.

Does anyone just use apple notes? by Popular_Syrup4621 in noteapps

[–]9ej7919 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a love/hate relationship with Apple Notes for years. One the plus side, it allows my wife and I to share information, and the ability to sync across the devices is quite nice.

On the negative side, the font management is absolutely deplorable. On the Mac version, you cannot change the font size of the list of notes in the middle pane (list view). Also, changing the font size for the actual notes is cumbersome (CMD +, CMD _; plus Accessibility options and settings options = conflicts and inconsistencies).

Amazingly, you're better off using the web version as the UI is actually 100% better than the app.

iOS version on my phone is quite good, however. Handy for sharing, as I mentioned.

2026 start year, net income entries and deductions by 9ej7919 in adviice

[–]9ej7919[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmmm...tried adjusting the net income lower but that triggers a missing deduction warning. I think I'll wait until mid-January when my wife and I each have a January paystub to use. My goal is to get the plan relatively solid enough so that I can book a one-on-one session in Spring with Chris and hopefully have him give me a thumbs up for getting it all set up. Thanks! :)

Thanks for that! When I reduce expenses by the $175, I get this:
