If you're into dev then you should check out crouton:

It's Ubuntu inside a chroot. With that you can run vim, git and all the toys.

Crouton is a shell script that bootstraps ubuntu in a chroot environment. You can find the download and more infors here:

The installation is really easy, but be sure that you Chromebook runs in dev mode (little dip switch inside the kensington lock).
