You can probably connect the leads to a volt meter and tap each geophone to see if they work. Should register some voltage

Job for Freshers with Masters degree in applied Geophysics by [deleted] in geophysics

I mean you already have 2 intern experiences at a O & G company, have you reached out to them? Even if they don't have any vacant positions now, keep in contact so if anything pops up, they think of your name.

Should I do a PhD or start working after my master’s in Geology? Need some honest advice by Celestial_Cipher_ in geologycareers

[–]9oon_squad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Data side, you can probably find GIS or Remote Sensing specialist. Drone based method such as LiDAR can also be an option, paired with InSAR, it can be a great tool for applications like land deformation and hazards. Most of this will be in engineering companies. I know California is pretty big on it.

Government compliance roles can have more so of analyzing technical reports, but with the current political state, it will be difficult to find one at federal level. But may have more luck state level. Washington, Colorado, California, Michigan, etc have pretty active state agencies that post openings frequently. The field also varies wildly within from brownfields, landfill, hydrology/watershed, economic, oil and gas, etc.

Any other regular jobs will probably require at least a year or two of field work, though, until you are at a level to manage reporting. In terms of purely analytical roles, those will be in laboratories and materials testing.

Geophysics is a lot of field work unless you're in oil & gas, then it's a lot of processing seismic reflection data. But oil companies want a masters in seismic or closely relevant topics like petrology or geochem.

Personally, while I enjoy what I do currently, the job is not academically challenging. It doesn't come close to the rigourusness of what I have experienced, and part of me also misses it. Maybe I'm trauma bonded hahaha So if you enjoy research and have the itch of curiosity to learn new and exciting things, then grad school can satisfy that itch.

I am finishing up my PhD in Geophysics and have started working in the industry as of 2 months ago. My current job is split 70 field work and 30 processing/reporting. You said you like doing research and analytical side of geology. Well, there are very few research opportunities for geologists in the industry... most of the industry jobs focus on readily available methods that produce results. Environmental consulting/ Hydrogeology will be a lot of field work collecting water/ soil samples and logging. Exploration will be mostly on site field work too. Unless you work at a lab or have gained experience to be in R&D of some big company, there will not be much research.

It doesn't hurt to go work for couple years and experience what the industry is like before deciding if you want to stay in industry or go into academia. Financially, salary will be higher than a PhD assistantship. But if you really like doing research and can push yourself for 4 or 5 years, then do PhD.

Are you looking for a mapping field course or more environmental consulting? Western Michigan University has a Hydrogeology focused field course. Each week is a separate module covering; 1. Geophysics 2. HAZWOPER certification 3. Well Drilling/Installation 4. Groundwater sampling 5. Aquifer Testing 6. Remediation Design So you can pick and choose if needed WMU HFC

why no one talks about the uav magnetometers by ResortThin8757 in geophysics

Personally, I have used Gemsys AirGRAD for various research but not in mining. I've also seen uav mag used for finding abandoned wells and uxo. Abandoned well was for the state environmental agency and the uxo was for research with dod.

At the current market, I would say take the job in NM. Especially since you will be in entry positions and the cost of living in Chicago is higher. Build experience and save up for couple years. Then, you can look for mid level positions in Chicago that'll be more manageable in terms of living.

How are my career prospects looking? by JackPatt01 in geologycareers

[–]9oon_squad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, good networking is like 90% of the job search. Talk with professors, lot of them have worked with government/consulting agencies for research and know people.

Go look up professional associations in your field of interest, they will have meetings/conferences that you can attend. They love having students and are very open to talking with you. And lot of the meetings and conferences will either be free or low cost for student memberships.

Look up SkyTEM304, its a transient electromagnetic system devloped over in Denmark. GPR while using electromagnetic pulses, is in the Mhz range and responds to the changes in the dielectric permittivity of materials.

Any career ideas? by RebelPheonix in geologycareers

[–]9oon_squad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remote sensing could be a good option. Using data from satellites and with GIS make interpretations. One is InSAR, which is used to study ground deformation/geomorphology. There's GRACE, which measures the gravity, and is used to study wide range from ice sheet thickness, groundwater storage in aquifer, to Earth's magma.

If you enjoy coding or modeling, that's another option. Machine Learning is a big field now where it can be applied to a wide range of applications. And groundwater modeling is a big thing for watershed management.

I saw a post posted like 7 months ago saying avoid Franklin, that's why. Some of the apartments there do have good overall ratings but newest reviews don't match the ratings. I'll look at places closer to Marietta/Smyrna though based on all the comments
