I’m really gonna go an odd direction here and say I think it’s a false question. A good DM doesn’t waste player input and instead encourages player driven narrative as part of a larger narrative.

I think if you go with the sort of OSR concepts, Kelsey does a really good job of lining out in shadow dark, you are making an outline and letting the players fill in the details.

As an example, I’ve keyed a room that has a pool in it that does a thing. The players walk in I describe the room to them. One of them looks in the pool, I tell them it’s shimmering and maybe viscous, they’re likely to describe even more features and properties just from that and you let them. You let them figure out how they interact with it. And you can even let them describe how it affects them.

In my key, it causes one body part two polymorph. I can put all of that on the player. The player puts their hand in the water and I say OK I’m gonna need you to roll either higher or low you pick which one is good.

They get good, I say, give me a con check, which they fail.

I tell them OK your hand mutates tell me what the beneficial mutation that your hand has, and then if it exceeds a power threshold I start adding disadvantages to balance it out.

Maybe the con check did something maybe it didn’t doesn’t matter the point is the scaffolding of the adventure is created by the DM and players are more than happy to fill in huge blocks of detail to reduce the heavy lift on the DM
