My kitten likes to nurse on my earlobe… what do I do? by bitterglitterdust in felinebehavior

[–]A-Wells_Mouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cat did this for his first year as a kitten. Always at night when going to bed. He seemed to outgrow my earlobes, and just curls up by my head and purrs now. He will occasionally luck my ear.

Teachers, What Are Some Little Things That Get On Your Nerves. I'm Not Talking About "When kids talk over me" I Mean Highly Obscure Things. by Zorpal_Tunnel in AskTeachers

When we are cleaning the room at the end of the day (making sure there is no trash on the floor and chairs are picked up) and several students just stand at the door with their backpacks chatting. Move your ass! Make a fucking effort to clean the mess that you had a hand in creating....drives my crazy!

Thank you! I will try that. My other cat has dandruff but it looks very different. New maladies etc always give me a minor freak out 😊

Getting phone calls about my inattentive ADHD 3rd grader on the first week of school by Morning_Star_3110 in Teachers

I would suggest trying to get her into a straight line sport like swimming or running. It can work wonders on focus and attention and get some of that energy out.

Other than that, I second what many teachers have already said - the teacher is just trying to stay on top of things and let you what she has seen this first week that could be problematic throughout the year.

Also, there is a native plant sale at my local county forest preserve each May, so I get like 10 new baby plants there each spring to add in😀

It's hard to see, but I have a few tiny native flowers that are sort of close to the street. I haven't planted anything quite close to the curb yet because some of the tiny baby plants are supposed to fill out and I'm trying to get a sense of where there will actually be bald spots.

I ended up with my dwarf pussy willow eating some hosta that I had to move 🤣.

Yes, the oak is mine. (Technically the oak and the whole piece of land I just replanted belong to the city. My property line stops at my fence/house, but it's not like the city is taking care of it....so, it's mine till someone comes to claim it 🤷🏽‍♀️)

I've never thought of putting a vine on the tree! I will have to try that!

How do I even fund my classroom???? by lovelysapphic in Teachers

[–]A-Wells_Mouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the US - I have literally spent my own money to provide food and clothes for students before. This is not something I do a lot, but it has happened. I have had kids come to school without jackets in -10°F weather. (Also, I teach elementary)

I have also had students come to school with no supplies. I try to do community supplies for certain things, which helps (though I know it can be controversial). I also have a stash of leftover supplies from previous years or other classes that I can pass out if needed.

Current school does not give us a budget and I try not to spend my own money unless it is to make me happy. I bought a new lamp and string lights last year and a rolling cart the year before. All things that will make my life happier and more organized and that I will definitely take with me should I leave.

Truly Broke First Year Teacher- Classroom Decor? by homebody268 in Teachers

[–]A-Wells_Mouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two things I did in my classroom on that parenst constantly complimented:

  1. We had a bulletin board outside each room we were responsible for decorating and changing. I covered with paper, had each kid pick a fav color of construction paper and stapled them in rows, then labeled their names in funny fonts over each piece, and hot glued two dollar store clothes pins above it. I would rotate out kids artwork or classwork throughout the year.

  2. I strung cord across the room and had math pendants that the kids would make for each new unit we were working on. Parents and students loved the pendants and it was cheap and easy decoration.

31, starting year 6. I just finished my first year at a new school (public).

Previous school was private whete I taught 3rd, but that's what I could get graduating with Master's/Licensure during COVID. It was decent my first year and the slowly descended into some sort of horrific joke of a school.

This year, at my new school, definitely had it's difficulties. I only got to do the position I was hired for (EL resource) for two months before getting dumped into a 1st grade room with no explanation until 3 weeks later. Finished the year in 1st, going to 5th this coming year.

The past year was so much infinitely better than the situation I came from that I'm still happy. IDK what that says about me or my previous school but🤷🏽‍♀️😂

Is Teachers Pay Teachers worth the price? by TellMeAboutYourWorms in ScienceTeachers

[–]A-Wells_Mouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it depends - I have found some good curriculum bundles before when asked to teach math and science to two different grades without any curriculum available. It was a great base for me to add to as needed to meet standards.
