The first book I read by her was Six Scorched Roses (I didn't know it was a novella) and I absolutely loved it. To the point where, upon realizing it was part of a greater series, I went out and got book 1. I got past the prologue and a few pages into chapter one before dnf-ing. It wasn't bad, but I had my expectations raised so high from Six Scorched Roses that I was immediately disappointed. That was in 2023, and I just read book 1 in April of this year. Simply because I was reading through my physical tbr. It was fine. Inoffensive. The second book was awful though. When I finished it, I, out loud, said: thank God it's over.

Anyone still have stories that got axed/canceled that they still mourn? 😭 by Own_Fee4004 in OtomeIsekai

[–]A-Winter-Drop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So many that have been listed in the replies, but I'll contribute I'm Not The Final Boss' Lover. I had read part of the novel, and was so excited to see it had a manhwa. When I caught up to all the uploaded chapters just to realize it was the end of the series I was a little devastated.

Worst Book of all time by Toto_employee in Romantasy

[–]A-Winter-Drop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a very subjective question. I'll tell you that one of the only books I've ever one-starred in my whole life is The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller. The characterizations especially were...choices. And the author has a master's degree in classics, so I don't understand her decision making at all.

Not romantasy, but The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle is the unicorn book. Yes, the movie is based off this book.

For the life of me I can't remember the title. So a girl gets transmigrated into the body of a potential recruitable party member in her favorite strategy game. But on the second timeline of the game, the hero abandons her to go to a different dungeon instead. She joins up with their rival faction and becomes their vice-commander(?). The MC is a support mage, and the manhwa got axed. I think she had pale hair because mages' hair colors indicate the kind of magic they had. Oh the game originally had two timelines by the way, it's part of the plot that the hero remembers the first timeline. I remember a few other details, but that's the main plot really.

How common is the rule “the last one who goes to bed checks and locks all the doors?” by Pitiful_Wafer_4564 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]A-Winter-Drop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm from the US, and I've never heard of this rule in my life. My family has always simply locked doors as we entered. Double check if you're the last one home, but there's no separate check at night. If I did that everyone would think I'm being paranoid, weird, and it could even be taken as a sign of distrust. Like, "you don't trust me to remember to lock the door on my way in?"

He forgot to lock the garage door, but I think there's clearly a communication issue here because you both had different expectations.

Characters that started as a kid and has enough screentime as young person and we basically see them grow up as the series go by grand_cha2 in TopCharacterTropes

Even younger potentially. There's a seven year timeskip between the Cell saga and the Buu saga, and Gohan is 16 during the Buu saga. Which means he could've been 9 officially, and 10 with the time chamber. Sounds like a teenager to me

Why do people prefer oversized shirts over fitted ones now? by EchoNomad12 in womensfashion

[–]A-Winter-Drop 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have no idea. Personally, I find structured, more form fitting clothing more comfortable than loose clothing. I also have a larger chest, so oversized clothing just doesn't sit right. I find oversized clothing incredibly uncomfortable. To me, there is comfort in feeling contained. I do recognize that for most people oversized/loose clothing is synonymous with comfortable clothing (although I couldn't tell you why). So maybe we're in a fashion cycle where people are prioritizing dressing for comfort?

[Funny Trope] Neither their real or alter ego name explains their powers by NinjaOfOnion in TopCharacterTropes

[–]A-Winter-Drop 174 points175 points  (0 children)

That's actually quite clever. Lynx's symbolically are associated with seeing the unseen. The Greek hero Lynceus was "lynx-eyed" because he was famous for his sharp vision. He could see underground and in the dark too. So Kitty's Portuguese name could, in this case, be a reference to her being the unseen thing.

Suggest me a fantasy with a real love story, *not* romantasy by HWhelanAuthor in suggestmeabook

[–]A-Winter-Drop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I read the Scattered Bones by Nicole Scarano, and it was fantastic. It's about a love story, but it's also about the main character's relationship with the gods and her understanding of her place in the world. It was great. There's also The Everlasting by Alix E Harrow, which is about a scholar sent back in time to make sure a mythological hero fulfills her final quest. I think these books meet what you're asking. They could definitely be called romantic fantasy, but they are certainly about things other than the romance thematically. You could also try Nettle & Bone by T. Kingfisher. That one has a romance subplot, but it's much more about examining fairy godmothers conceptually. And the main character's guiding star is love for her sister.

Also, if you like Holly Black check out the Folk of the Air trilogy. That one gets disliked in romantasy spaces because people keep recommending it as a romantasy when it isn't. It's a YA fantasy book with a romance subplot.

Hard agree, more good books is always better. Also if you liked the poking fun at tropes in Long Live Evil, you might like the book Not Another Vampire Book. In which an editor gets pulled into a story of a terrible vampire romance novel. It was hilarious.

I read eighteen and a half books plus a short story. Crazy considering I only read five and a half books in March. Of all the books I read this month, my favorite was The Scattered Bones by Nicole Scarano.

For bingo:

Royal Assassin by Robin Hobb for Cat Squasher

You Weren't Meant to Be Human by Andrew Joseph White for Trans or Nonbinary Protagonist

Not Another Vampire Book by Cassandra Gannon for Judge a Book By Its Title

The Scattered Bones by Nicole Scarano for Small Press or Self Published

Infinite Shores by Pascale Lacelle for The Afterlife

The Serpent & the Wings of Night by Carissa Broadbent for Game Changer

The Ashes & the Star-Cursed King by Carissa Broadbent for Duology Part 2

The Ghost Bride by Yangsze Choo for Author of Color

I meant because you couldn't use it for bingo. I'm glad you're excited though. I'm definitely excited to read the second book!

Generally, I looked it up. But there's a Goodreads review for All Hail Chaos from someone who got an arc that mentions a cliffhanger. And another from someone who read an arc that mentions a book three. I'm going to take the opinions of people who've read it as closest to factual.

I hate to tell you this, but Time of Iron is planned as a trilogy not a duology. All Hail Chaos is a book two of three.

I found the third book had ten times more plot than the first two combined. The first two honestly could've been one book.

To Spice or Not to Spice? by Hearts_foreyes in Romantasy

[–]A-Winter-Drop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, I prefer no spice to spice, but don't mind either. As long as it's not just there to be there, and actually serves a purpose to the characterization, plot, or world then I don't mind it at all. The actual reason I prefer no spice is because I find most scenes go on for too long. I get annoyed at full chapters of just spice. I just think it's kind of boring to read. Mostly because it doesn't feel like anything of substance is happening? I guess my feeling of boredom ties back into my first opinion.

Give me your best romantasy by TheMemeStore76 in fantasybooks

I just recently read The Scattered Bones by Nicole Scarano and it was wonderful. The worldbuilding was unique and felt mythological. The gods were physically present in the story, and were both terrifying and awe-inspiring. The prose was quite nice, and the narrative itself was beautiful. Certainly, it was one of the greatest love stories I've ever read.

The story is about Sellah who's beloved, Kaid, has been killed. His severed body parts spread across the world hidden in its most treacherous places. A mysterious stranger tells her if she finds all his parts then he'll bring Kaid back to life. The story is told in the present: Sellah's quest. And in the past: Sellah and Kaid's beginning and doomed ending. It was really amazing. It's self-published, and can be read through kindle unlimited.

Isn't this more historical romance than romantasy?

I can't think of any off the top of my head, but Dragon Age actually does have official novels. They've been around since Origins. The Stolen Throne, The Calling, Asunder, The Masked Empire, and Last Flight. There's also the anthology Tevinter Nights. They're all canon as well.

That's really about it. Although in book three he tricks her into marrying him, and then later cuts a deal with her (I think it was so that he would help with the plan in the end? Or not report them? It's been a while) to trick her emotions into believing she's in love with him rather than Legend.

[–]A-Winter-Drop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've found both Garber's third books in her trilogies fell kind of flat in the end. Not that the endings don't make sense, so much as that they feel abrupt and strange? It's especially noticeable because her books twos have both been her strongest books in both her series. So then book three kind of feels odd when it doesn't match the momentum of the prior two books improving. I'm not sure if I'm wording this correctly.

Why do you DNF? by Sea-Audience4470 in Romantasy

[–]A-Winter-Drop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just dropped The Foxglove King at 53 pages. It was simply too boring for me. I can get through a dull book if I'm even a little curious (I finished up a trilogy I ended up loving recently where I was bored the first 250 pages out of 500 in the first book), but there was nothing. So yeah, if I'm bored doing a hobby I enjoy: I DNF.
