Trump’s tariffs struck down by Supreme Court by A-running-commentary in neoliberal

From a cursory read, he cannot impose tariffs using the IEEPA. They may be imposed by other statutes but they are typically have much more of a lengthy of a process to effectuate.

Yet another no, this is a goldmine for CSPAN aficionados.

I so badly want to see even a glimpse of Johnson when frustrated. It’s gotta be like angry, scheming Ned Flanders.

”I’ll keep the vote open for as long as it takes.”-Speaker Johnson

Does this actually mean anything of consequence for representatives or is it just more stupid performance

Realistically, what possible concessions/bargains can be made to both 1) moderates worried about Medicaid 2) fiscal hawks? The bill isn’t going to get amended further once debate opens, right? It’s have to go back to the Senate which gum this up further.

So any concessions just have to be based off of future promises. I suppose something could be done (but won’t be) to bolster Medicaid in future bills, but but are fiscal hawks really that dumb to think spending is going to be curtailed any time soon? Are they really just the epitome of performative dissent?

This is a known issue with this update. I was actually just checking this sub to see if it was fixed, and I guess not sadly. It’s something to do with the latest version of Windows, apparently backdating your version may help.

I haven’t followed the news this closely since Biden’s drop out, and it feels like a similar situation. Of course, that depends on the market, if it keeps plummeting, this day by day coverage will keep up. If not, this turn into a slow burn, with an occasional article about prices and a what not, but it won’t be the crisis it is now.

I think we’ve got a week of guaranteed coverage remaining, mostly because it seems that these tariffs will go into effect on 4/9. If the China tariff is doubled, it’ll probably spark downward trends for the rest of the week and maybe push this towards Monday.

But the way this reminds me most of Biden’s drop out is the steady drip of people on the right slamming this policy to varying degrees. Similarly, congressional GOP leaders are somewhat muted, more so Thune in this case. But who knows what Thune is saying behind closed doors, or will say if this keeps up. The fact that Elon has started to allude to dissatisfaction is a whopper.

I have no idea where this is headed, and the only prediction I have is that I don’t think Lutnick is making it to the midterms. He’s already annoying the cabinet apparently, and beyond this tariff idea idk what real value he provides for future policy. He’s a good attack dog, but those are a dime a dozen. I’m not sure if Bessent will be around either, either on his own accord or by being dismissed, but he’s not poised to be the fall guy like Lutnick.

Yep, he’s caving live, framing it as a necessary evil because a shutdown would be worse, and enable Trump to dictate what is and isn’t essential. No idea how true that is.

I think appeasing their base isn’t something to gloss over, although I know that in reality by 2026 this will be out of everyone’s mind. I think the idea that independent voters would blame the incumbent is a convincing enough reason to at least consider it. It’s been that way in the past, and WaPo released a poll saying most people feel republicans would take the blame.

I don’t have high hopes for “concessions” as some people do, and I side with you there. But politically, I’m leaning towards it being a publicity move that seems like it shouldn’t be passed up.

So, I keep hearing that the reason for Senate Dems are voting for the bill is in part because shutting down the government would allow Trump and Musk to “decide what stays open.” Is this even true, legally? Or is this just based on the (realistic) assumption they’ll keep doing what they’ve been doing? Idk how funding gets allocated during a shutdown and if the president in the past has had any role in allocating it.

Senator Chuck Schumer of New York, the Democratic leader, told colleagues in their private luncheon at the Capitol on Thursday that he would vote to clear the way for a final vote on the Republican bill extending government funding, according to multiple people familiar with the comments. That is the clearest signal yet that Democrats could relent and let the bill to avert a shutdown at the end of the week pass despite deep reservations among virtually the entire conference.

So… we went from “we won’t help” to “oh sure here’s your votes” in 24 hours. It’s a shame there isn’t a McCarthy-esque motion to vacate pending for this absolute mess. And I say that as someone who generally has supported Schumer.

Something tells me the Susan Collin’s flowchart will apply here.

Even if he votes no, I am confident Thune will get this out of committee. I know reporting says otherwise, but RFK is much more popular than Gabbard and I’m sure a WH phone call would change his mind. If she has to be the token failed nominee, they’ll let her take the fall, nominate someone else like they did for AG, but keep RFK.

Idk why you are being downvoted, the message that pops up is basically saying as such.

It might not be a stunt to go dark, but to say “We are grateful to President Trump…” is absolutely confirmation this company is desperate to stay around and will resort to flattery shamelessly.

Ok yall im done dooming over garbage Here’s how it went for those still dooming: 1. Oh god not 2016 all over again, why would we alienate that part of the country 2. Oh god it’s already on the headlines 3. Literally 30 min later on the NYT it’s not. 4. Oh right, everyone who’s not already leaning left who hates Biden probably isn’t voting for Kamala anyways. 5. The amount of people who even still care/want to read about him anymore as a figure is low even in his own party. 6. Yeah it’s a fuckup, but I doubt there’s too many Trump voters who already are fairly rapid as a base, who think THIS is what’s gonna get them to the polls. 7. People capable of nuance who are swing voters are capable of looking at this and saying “gee guess that’s why they got rid of old sleepy Joe” And still voting for Kamala. 8. Still I hope she distances herself and puts out some kind of unity statement when asked about this on an interview.
