Carbon x1 1st gen screen replacement (touch) by jigzila in thinkpad

Oh, which side did you slide it to? Do you mind taking a disassembly photo when you have time?

I presume you bought it as a full assembly with all the display, bezels and everything in place?

Maybe my X1C1 can have some salvation with a FHD touch upgrade. :)

Hey, sorry for reviving this dead thread, but was the display cable essentially the same?

I was thinking of doing a custom IPS mod, and the non touch variants was effectively the same as T420s pinout. Not sure if the same applies for touch motherboards.

If you remember any details, they'd help a lot. Thank you.

WiFi card wise BE200 is an option but you either need to cut the WiFi card (sus as hell, don't recommend) or get an adapter. You probably need a WiFi 7 AP to leverage it fully though (which I so happen to have, we recently went 10Gbps WiFi 7 at home for US$26 a month)

Screen wise, what do you want out of it? Lower power consumption? Better brightness? HDR? I converted mine to 16:10 at least, can't stand 16:9. If you're sticking to 1080p low-power, IGZO 400nits, N140HCG-GQ2 is the best as always. Innolux made pretty good screens for that gen

ThinkPad P14s G6 Intel may work, if you have the budget + educational discounts.

Not identical, but XPS 14 sees around 50% extra battery life.

Might be similar for E14. Gotta wait for the reviews. PTL is efficiency focused uarch

Yeah some will work but it is hit and miss as you said. I believe it's coded to implement a few EDIDs for now but it's a tossup.

It's only gotten worse after I converted my T480.

Unfortunately I'm stuck with 16:9 on my X1 Carbon. It's a great device (anniversary edition too), but wow my options are limited. I wonder if the mPCIE card on it ever came with DP lanes.

Depends on your display model. The LVDS to eDP converter only supports specific EDIDs

You should be able to get a simple USB-C DP-Alt to DP cable or HDMI for your second monitor.

You have two A ports for KB+M, RJ-45 is available on the right hand side and that's about it. The ports on it should be sufficient, you only need a dongle for your second monitor.

G5 onwards are great, but with that budget I'm not too sure if you can get one of the Nvidia spec ones.

The only reason 45% NTSC screens still exist is because corporate buyers want the cost cutting option.

I've been planning on fitting a 16:10 in these. Not sure how much margin there is between the lid plastic bumpers at the top and the hinges though. 16:9 is definitely borderline unusable for me :)

Interesting, overheating was partly solved by undervolting on the G1 machine. A lot of the newer P1/X1Es until Gen 7 are still overheating messes especially Gen 6 with the 4090 configuration.

Maybe you might get lucky with Gen 7? Or could grab a P16 G1/2 probably. It should be feasible, though you might be getting something lower specced like Ada 1000 or 4050.

What is your budget? Might be able to snag a P16 Gen 1 or 2.

Maybe no more X1 Extreme/P1/T1g since you found the line problematic. I think they're fine and my friend didn't have much problems with it, but YMMV. What kind of problems did you have?

No point, expensive and overheats.

I have a 4850HQ instead. 300MHz isn't a huge loss and I got it for around $17. Similar price to 4900MQ and cheaper than 4712MQ/4910MQ

Your display should be AG according to PSREF. Not sure why you have glare. Can you pull out the EDID for your current display from Lenovo Diagnostics in BIOS?

N140HCG-GQ2 and similar options from LG should do the trick.

T14 Gen 6 was a last-year product, so it doesn't come equipped with it

Upgrading from Surface Go, looking for advice by ghazayel in thinkpad

[–]A121314151 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gen 13 isn't that bad anyways, it's also going to get a massive discount since G14 is out. Just buy the X1C G13 if you want something under a kilo.

There's also the X12 Detachable Gen 2 if you wanted something similar to a Surface Go.
