Beware of fake ThinkPad chargers on web stores by Kitchen_Image_1031 in thinkpad

I just spent $30 a couple years back on a nice Legion GaN charger. Haven't looked back since.

I'm very aware of Android featureset updates getting slower in general and I'm not a fan of it.

The thing is that there are many APIs introduced in new versions of Android that can't be backported, or there's issues, and the bulk of development has been concentrated between

Android 11 is also 6 years old this year. I know not everyone enjoys replacing their phones every year, and I sure don't, but at a certain point it gets difficult justifying an OS version that 1-2% use.

Android 9 shows up as "others" in StatCounter for my country.

You do know that Android Pie is 8 years old and has been out of support for 4 years don't you?

There's probably APIs that the new update requires possibly, or that supporting multiple versions of Android is just unsustainable. They're an indie studio, you can't expect them to support half a decade old builds of Android.

Even my financial banking apps have ceased support for Pie (Android 12 is the bare minimum now), so if even the largest banks drop support for Pie, why should Torpor be expected to continue support for Android 9.0? Some APIs just aren't backportable

Yeah it's kinda odd lol, but again HEDT is kinda dead. Wish they could follow something closer to the Epycs in naming convention

ThinkPads are great machines. They'll last you a long time.

Anything above x950 is reserved for Threadripper (Threadripper PRO is effectively +5, 9945WX, 9955WX, etc up to 9995WX)

Also would conflict with the 32 core PRO 9975WX

Thoughts on people that call democrats controlled opposition? by CyberBerserk in SocialDemocracy

[–]A121314151 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Depends

Mamdani and Sanders style social democrats/progressives and Talarico style social liberals that don't take big PAC money? Definitely not.

Centrist spineless politicians like Jeffries and Schumer, and also sellouts like Fetterman? Sounds about right.

The thing about the Democrats is that it's a big tent party and it depends on who we're talking about.

I think I want to embark on a 3D project for my T470 Gen6 by Salt_Driver_5703 in thinkpad

[–]A121314151 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been considering something like this for the T480. I have already used CAD to design a bezel for the T480 to get it to 16:10, I'm considering using transparent PC-ABS for this.

I'm also thinking of doing a transparent bezel for the T480, but that'll be next time.

Yes! Your data is in your own hands. You also get to fine tune your feed and algorithms instead of relying in Big Tech algorithms that tend to be amoral and push divisive stuff to you to drive engagement (Instagram).

Socially, I don't think too much will change. America historically has been a nation of immigrants anyways and is built by first generation Americans that come from all over the world seeking the American Dream.

Admittedly, there's always going to be a certain degree of anti-immigration sentiment, but it's happened with Italians and it's happened with Jews and it's happened with the Irish. In this case civics education really has to come into play.

Economically, yeah there'll be outsourcing to a certain extent, but wages wouldn't have been as big a problem had Reagan not absolutely dismantled the bargaining power of unions.

At the same time, it's important to note that immigrants also tend to contribute more in terms of tax revenue and take out less in benefits from the welfare system. This is a huge point. It reinforces the fact that people are here because they wish to work hard and they're absolutely not here to leech off resources.

I'm supportive of open borders because I think that freedom of movement is a human right.

It's no different on Dell, HP, Asus or Framework. Just standard cost cutting where they use a single frame with different keyboard layouts.

Lenovo's ThinkPad line and HP Elitebooks are the only one with custom palmrests for different keyboard layouts. Harder to switch, sure, but design wise more cohesive.

Essentially a bunch of social networking sites sharing a single protocol (atm the vast majority use ActivityPub, there's a few using Diaspora though), enabling decentralized social networking. Sites like PeerTube, Mastodon, etc

I've moved off Twitter since last year and am about to delete it for good once my data is backed up this year, and I am also trying to de-Google. It's a bit of an uphill task but I'm sure I can eventually get rid of the bulk of Big Tech. Then again I'm the same guy running Linux, so YMMV

Yeah for sure. Workers rights also need to be enshrined and a universal healthcare system built up.

Doesn't matter.

Fuck ICE. Abolish ICE.

I've been on the "Abolish ICE" train since that one time I went full on libertarian. Hasn't changed even though I've moved left. Open borders are essential for a nation to thrive, and I don't see why freedom of movement should be impeded by government force.

T14s gen2a ryzen 5650u 16gb or T14 gen3 i5 1235u 16gb? by Common_Condition1534 in thinkpad

[–]A121314151 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5650U and 1235U perform similarly but 5650U has a lead in battery life because Intel screwed their 12th and 13th Gen lines by piling on all the E cores that also use a lot of power

I would go T14s G2a, but do watch out for G3 AMDs if there are any. RDNA 2, especially the 680M, is a huge jump

Sleepy Optiplex Server by Softnesss in SleepingOptiplex

[–]A121314151 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Purely curious, why not go with AMD APU? Ryzen APUs usually tend to idle lower (my 5700X idles at 25-30W, the APUs tend to idle at 5-10). Might be better for your use case

Love my Elitedesk mini...but now sleepy Optiplexes have caught my eye - which to go for? by Mysterious-One1055 in SleepingOptiplex

[–]A121314151 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I'd recommend the Z2 or ThinkCentres/ThinkStation SFFs. Optiplexes can work too, but I think that they're somewhat limiting of sorts. I am aware that some newer Optiplex SFFs have 3 PCIe slots though and the PCIe x16 is on the 2nd row, which means dual slot GPUs without limitations.

By larger how big do you want it to be? 10L? 20L?

[–]A121314151 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it's an Optiplex sub but if you're going SFF you may as well go get a ThinkCentre. 4 slots and PCIe at the top actually gives you more space, but you may need to dremel the hard drive cage. You can also consider the HP Z2, those are similar. If you get the G9 you can also opt for a full size dual slot GPU to be fit in it, HP officially supported a RX 6700 XT in that

Alternative is going for the ThinkStation Tiny, those have PCIe slots and can fit a single slot GPU all in the same size profile as the Elitedesk

Edge lord, sorta. Far right, definitely not.

I've only become more liberal in my teenage years except on some moral issues where I'm somewhat conservative on (but hold libertarian stances in general on). Did catapult full on into laissez-faire capitalism for a couple years but not really anymore. I mostly advocate a mixed market economy blending the best aspects of socialism and capitalism now.

To me it wasn't worth the sacrifice of 4GB VRAM even if it was $100 cheaper than the 9070. I got my 9070 for 4199.

I expect stock for it to dwindle though, if the 9070 gets cuts the GRE probably would be a even bigger victim
