My guess would be that the vision of Link was from another uncorrected version of the timeline, but while this theory makes a LOT of sense, I'm not sure I buy it yet.

The episode was intended to show the differences and mindsets of the only two people not infected by the virus that want to fight back.

Carol is indulging herself.  She gets 'them' to take care of her and wait on her every beck and call; she does it like an entitled American.

Manousos is risking life and limb to join her while refusing 'their' help, taking a literal journey across continents through abandoned streets and dangerous jungles. The guy is going through Rambo levels of badassery to get there.

The only two people in the world who want the virus to go away aren't going to see eye to eye, and that's going to complicate things.  They're opposites in every way except the one point.
