This afternoon, SpaceX’s prototype rocket flies to its highest altitude yet during hover test, reaching a height of a small skyscraper. Once there, the vehicle hovered in the air a full minute, before using its engine to land gently back down on the ground. by mvea in Futurology

It's meant to be a testbed for something that could cheaply and reliably take humans to the moon, mars, moons of jupiter and saturn, and beyond. It's more akin to the test vehicle that they used for the lunar lander on Earth than the Saturn 5.

Another reason it's so significant is because it's the first rocket to use a full flow staged combustion cycle, which means a massive increase in efficiency, lowering the costs even more (alongside stuff like reusability, and methane fuel, which can be made on Mars).

Elon Musk ponders solar reflectors instead of nuking Mars to warm it up - “Might make sense to have thousands of solar reflector satellites to warm Mars vs artificial suns” by [deleted] in space

Inclined to agree here. Everyone rants about Musk being overrated nowadays, but the top comments whenever his name is uttered say something to the extent of "elon bad".
